That looks impressive already. So another question, how do you know which wire are for what. I take it most ships have a pretty similar layout. Is there any sort of guide for this.

Bish,

Here is the Eugen's rigging so far. I still have some more to install and some trimming to do. I'm changing the color from black to more of a steel. The flag lanyards may change to a lighter color as well. I don't like the way the black stands out.

Moff,

It looks great, actually too great... Like a big piece of chocolate, and I'm hungry! lol

I've never built Fruils before, but I have built a set of Modelkasten tracks and they were time consuming. But they did look good when completed.

Keep up the great work, Moff. I'm looking forward to more!

The hull and turret are primed and I am now moving along to the construction of the Friuls. I got one side done in 4 days, at the expense of my battered left index finger and thumb. It's amazing how uncomfortable just holding a lumpy piece of metal can be! Hopefully I can get a move on, I'd love to get this thing to the "real" painting and weathering stage soon.

Trabi,

I really like the camo on the Tiger. It's coming along extremely well! And it sounds like your hiking trip was lots of fun.

Slowly but surely on the Salamander. I took the bang seat out of the cockpit and built the HGW harness for it last night (about 1.5 hours with 22 pieces). Also added the decal and a wash to it. I may drybrush it to highlight some of the raised detail.

Brandon,

The seat looks perfect! Bless you for having such patience. Great job!

Thanks Gamera and Bish!

That place is more north. About half way of Finland. At "loin of maiden Finland" as we say.

And the Tiger:

I looked pictures of Sturmpanzers in Finland and I liked idea of added logs on side of tanks. Those were against magnetic mines. Should work also for anti tank guns.

Trabi, sounds like you had a nice hike and some nice finds. Was that near the border along the Karelian Isthmus.

I like the look of the Tiger, nice scheme.

Hi guys! Nice progress here!

It´s been while I have updated my build. Right after last post me and my wife we went to hiking (only two days and 45 km) near eastern border. We didn´t met bear, but someone week before us did, successfully. Or atleast I think that who wrote about that was the hiker not the bear, because he didn´t mention anything about flavor.

But something we stumbled upon. First we saw two old machine gun nests and next to those were about 15 dissembled dugouts. (Used to be similar as this: http://www.luontoon.fi/documents/10550/367001/PETK_korsu_HeikkiKorkalainen_444.jpg/76d49bb8-7e79-4a85-b08c-d590c24a1df5?t=1452156416229) That was part of "Salpa line" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salpa_Line

Before we found those I didn´t even notice, that we were five kilometers from border at nearest.

After that trip I´ve been bit busy, so I have built this mostly at nights. That´s why updating build log is bit slow.

But let´s get back in bussines!

Saving Tank Tiger

So I started to try to correct colors with Mig washes. Five layers of "warm white wash" to green surface, two layers of "brown wash" to red and one layer of "earth wash" to dunkelgelb. I think that worked. Swastika decals I modified from Revell 1:48 Me 110 decals. Numbers are from some US fighter.

Next some details and tracks.

I read all the reviews and the revell seemed to come out on top so thats what i opted for. I am hoping i can get to it in a year or two, but got a couple of other naval subject to get in first. But i definatly wnat to ad the Eugen, i can't have one without the other.

He said it was the Tamaya.

I built the Tamaya several years back...25 maybe but is was damaged in a move and was lost at sea. I hear the Revell is far better and I really want that kit.

Here’s the picture of the two. The guy who build the Bismarck is part of the local model club. The size difference is impressive especially the difference between 20.3cm and 38cm main guns.

Thnaks Steve. ye, initially i am thinking of Bismarck, but would like to gte some otehr 350 ships. But i have always just been curious. I did imagine people would not replicate every single wire, when i look at the real ships my head just spins at the thought of just were to start let alone doing them all.

I do have some 1Ib fishing line as well as the easy line, i think i will use those. I have seen an aerial view of the 2 ships in Norway, but if you get the chnace and can post that pic here, would love to see it.

I use EZ-Line and light gage monofilament. I usd to do the stretched sprue thing but it's too hard to get constant and it's too fragile.

For placement I look at actual pictures and completed builds. It also hepls to kinda know what the lines are. Some are guy wires, some are flag lanyards while others are low frequency antennas.

You don't typically have to put every line on, just a sample. There are way too many actual lines on a real warship and it would be overly complex. Since the scale line is much smaller in 1/350 it would look overdone. I have some line that you can barely see with the naked eye which would probably better in scale but almost impossible to work with.

Are you thinking of your Bismarck? I took a picture of the Eugen next to a friend's Bismarck,  what a size difference!

Oh wow BD, that seat looks fantastic!! I wish I could do so good on cockpit seat. Yes

A small update, but it represents a ton of work. I have the PE railings on, now on to the rigging, boat booms, lifeboats, porthole baffles (in the original picture, probably for airflow in the July heat at Bikini), flagpoles Etc. Etc.

And wow again, looks amazing, and i love those last two pics. Do away with the edge and make your pic B&W and you have the same image.

Ok, rigging, now this is what i have been looking forward to. 2 questions. What do you use and how do you decide where to run the rigging.

Steve,

Amazing work on the Eugen! I'm looking forward to when this one is complete! Absolutely love seeing your completed ships! What scale is this kit?

I would like to apologize to everyone in the GB. I haven't worked on my Type 4 since February. I haven't even sat at my work bench for 4 months. Anyway, recently I dug out a different kit to get the juices flowing again. I'm close to completing this kit, and when I am, I'll be jumping back into the the Type 4. Bare with me, I'll have some WIP pictures soon!

BD: She's lookin' great! I know what you mean about leaving out cockpit parts there- hope you can get them in there without knocking other stuff off.

Steve: She's lookin' better and better! Speaking of knocking stuff off, that's why I don't use much PE. I swear that once I get beyond a half-dozen pieces or so I end up knocking off two or three for everyone I attach... Angry

Joe,

There is little difference between detailing a ship and detailing a plane, there's just alot more of it and it takes longer. I usually work on other "quicker"  builds so I don't get burned out on the "long distance" build. The only thing that can be a pain is all the fiddley bits that can break off.

That is some impressive effort in patience and meticulous skill. I'm not sure if I'm inspired or scared senseless of building my first ship model from watching the PE work your doing.Indifferent. Regardless, your abilities are mind boggling.

Brandon: Well done on getting the engine on without mishap. It looks great.

Steve: Your Prinz Eugen is looking magnificent as well as the water effects you achieved. I find it fascinating that you are still finding tidbits of detail to apply to your build. You really do have some great modeling skills my friend.

Moff: Your barrel turned out awesome. Your construction and detail are really choice. Nice work indeed. I sure hope you're able to pull of the scheme you want as that would look sharp.
