Shelf of Doom GB 2016-17 (now extended to 30th June !!!!!!!)

Tony, nice work on the infantryman.

Started back on the Bearcat.  It was originally supposed to have been finished as part of the Weekend GB, but didn't make it in time. The color scheme is Gloss Sea Blue with yellow wings.  Not a fan of the quality of the paint job, but it's good enough to go on the shelf when it's done.

Here's a pic of my work area.  One of my New Year's resolutions was to clean it up.  In the pic are seven candidates for this build.  Next up will be the Hobby Boss 1/72 F-5E in Patrouille Suisse markings.

MC,  I think your water will be super. I use titanium white too, but I'll learn from yours.

Buddy, I love that scheme, looking forward to seeing it with markings.

Tony, I started the decals last night.  The markings are from Starfighter Decals, and depict an aircraft stationed at NAF Inyokern, China Lake, CA in 1952.  The Bearcat I'm building was used in developing the HVAR after the war.  The decals are thin and respond well to Microsol and Microset.  You better be sure they're where you want them when you put them on the model because they grab quickly and there's no sliding them around to adjust them. If you're careful, you can pick them up with tweezers and move them that way.  I had to stop handling the model because even after 13 hours of drying time, the blue was still a little tacky.  When I got up this morning, it was still tacky so I may have to wait a day or two for the paint to dry.

Mongoose, nice work on the BMF. I made one attempt with bare metal finish and was less than successful. I think my mistake was to attempt it on a 1/72 P-51 (yes, it resides on my 'shelf of doom' now) The Mustang was very tiny in my ham sized hands.

My attempt to get back in the sadle has had little success. Life caught up with me again as I learned late last week of the passing of an Aunt I cared for deeply. This has been followed by a dose of the flu. I am hopeful of being better by the weekend or perhaps out of my misery...

Only joking on that last part!

Tony since there is some time left, put me down for a 1/32 Revell Spitfire Mk2 that has been boxed last year after givving me to much fit issues and a 1/48 Dragon Fokker D-7...much the same reason.

Maybe this GB will force me to complete them aswell :-)

I have been doggedly ploughing through all my builds and smugly thought I had no need for the SoD GB.  But as my son is starting his last year of high school and I have inherited a part done F-22 Raptor. So here I am, if you'll have me...

Lewbud, great colour scheme - the gloss colours (especially white and yellow) can be such a pain.

MC, as ever enjoying the treatment of a sea base. How would a treatment like this work with a waterline model? Or do I just go for a calm sea with minimal wake?

Mongoose, never had much success with bare metal, especially the foil, so I am impressed with the result.

Buddy - I love the look of that Bearcat. One day I'll do one of my projects on this type, and build a few with different schemes. This one is definitely included.

Lostagain - it's great to have you on board. I've updated the roster and look forward to seeing your F-22 get done. I've assumed it's 1.72, let me know if I'm incorrect please.

Panzerjager - that's a good looking project. I don't know much about the M-26, so I'm really going to enjoy getting to know it through your project.

I'm overdue for an update myself. I've been working on the Airfix 1/32 WW2 British Infantryman, from the multipose set. He'll be finished as a Coldstream Guard. I'm going to try and finish it this week as I have another bout of travel next week.

The thing with the Spitfire kit was that all went OK till I joined the fuse halves and glue on the wing. The fit was really bad and there was allot of filling and sanding to be done...this broke my "wanting to build it"

The cockpit is nice, I added some detail.

I now need to blend in the windshield to the fuselage, the fit is poor, but the rear section behind the seat is such a poor fit that the hood will have to be in the opne position to hid it :-(

Cockpit looks great. Hope it compensates for having to wrestle the rest of the build together.

The F22 is coming together. Tail is all together now. Took a lot of shims around the base of the vertical tails. Had to put a bit of filler into the leading edge (on the wing too). Not great fit on this kit, not sure if it a tamiya or one of their reboxings.

Next is cleaning up landing gear and doors, rebuilding the bang seat and then on to painting.

Nice to see the progress everyone. That F-22 looks to be a lot of work. The ship and the water base will look stunning I think. That's a really neat look cockpit Theuns, it's come up so well.

I thought I lost my PE set for the Johnston. When I put the kit aside I carefully place the PE set somewhere but couldn’t remember where. I looked most of the evening and couldn't find it. Like most folks I put box bottom inside the upside down box top. It occurred to me that I may have placed the set between the boxes and bingo there it was.

So now I need to find where I stopped and continue on. Now that I have a 3 day weekend coming up I hopefully I'll get some good bench time.

Really glad you found it MC, that would have killed the project. Don't you hate blowing a whole evening searching for something you know is there somewhere !

I'm done! Here's the finished product in BMF...I uswd matte aluminum BMF and burnished it with a popsicle stick. The surface wasn't in great shape after stripping the paint. I sanded with 1000 grit and cleaned out the old paint from panel lines. Almost everything came through the BMF like it should...including the rough surface in places. I had the hardest time getting a good line on the leading edge of the wings. I started with large sections like the wing and tail. Once I got used to the method I started doing some smaller pieces so there was some contrast between sections. I then buffed the whole model with a good car wax. Then I cleaned it all off when I did the decals. My purpose was to redo this and learn to use BMF so I deam this a success. Below is the before pic.

I rather used humbrol 163 dark green instead of the normal humbrol 30 wich is way to "blue"

I sprayed the green and brown very thin and uneven to simulate the blotchy way it would fade, I am rather pleased with the results sofar.

Haven't been much in the mood for building, but I did finally get the prop and canopy on.  All that's left to do is paint the gear doors and attach them and then she'll be ready to go to Buddy's Used Aircraft Lot and Museum.

The interior is almost complete with the addition of TufBox & flat head axe mounted in cargo area, seats installed and the light controls, MDT and cellphone mount:

Thanks Tony.  I dumped the gear doors in the purple lake to strip off my last attempt at yellow.  The problem I had the first time was I put too heavy a coat on of the gloss yellow, and it pulled away from the edges, showing the blue plastic underneath the Tamiya white primer.  I shot a coat of Testor's flat yellow from the square bottle in the hope that it will provide enough tooth for the gloss yellow to keep it from pulling away from the edges again.  Yes, the decals are Starfighter Decals.  They're out of print, but they can be found fairly easily.
