Theuns: Looks really good!!!

I laid down the primer coat on my Tempest Friday, sanded out some rough areas and laid down a second one today. Hopefully I can get my camera working to take some photos soon.

I am lucky with the decals ,being Tamiya they are sometimes difficult to set. I was rather worried about the large no step ones ontop of the radiators but the microsol seem to have eliminated any silvering. I put a matt clear ontop and a satin on bottom of plane to represent the way it fades differently

My second attempt, this time more weathered and faded. For the clearcoat I will use X22.

Theuns: Yuck, that really, really, sucks. But looks like you've got everything taken care of and ready to move forward again. Crossing my fingers the finish works better this time around.

Lewbud: Yeah, the time saved on using masks makes it worth it. I think I'm going to try to mask myself, if things don't work out I'll give it a whirl.

Bish,

Think of not only the tape, but the time you'll save as well. I was ready to go in about thirty minutes.

Added some color by painting the leading edges yellow.  Not real happy with the way one of the wings turned out, but I'm going to leave it be.  You can add a new tool 1/72 Airfix Typhoon to the list as well.  Xtradecals makes a set that has a Typhoon flown by Beamont, so I'll be adding those to the decal stash as well.  Was re-reading the Wikipedia entry on Beamont. Not only was he a heck of a pilot, but a fairly prolific writer as well.  Will have to see if some of his books are available on this side of the pond.

Bish,

As Jack said they are by AML. They apply easily and there was no leakage, even with the raised panel lines. I got them off of eBay for a couple of bucks plus shipping, a very good investment.

AA,

The Spit looks great! Can't wait to see the rest of the diorama.

Thanks Gamera!

Ye, i was looking at some on Hannants this afternoon. I might give one of those a try. For the amount of tamiya tape i use on a German splinter scheme, its got to be worth it.

Theuns, nope, not yet! I've still got an Airfix Hurricane Mk. I to build, along with various ground crew personnel figures to service the aircraft.

Gamera,

Glad I could help! In fact, I'll even take the blame if you get in trouble with SWMBO!

AA,

As you said, no pressure. Just one question, are you done yet?

Theuns,

The recovery should be no problem to a man of your talents. You can do it.

Good work there, AA - the Tamiya Spitfire does build up quite beautifully.

Theuns, excellent use of those masks, appear to be AML brand?

Jack

A quick update on the Tempest.

The masks.  Made of a thin, translucent vinyl.  Very easy to use.

The horizontal surfaces masked.

The vertical.

It's actually easy, being green.

Unmasked in all her glory.

The only thing I wish I'd done first is paint the band of sky first.

Well, except for the missing fuel cap (it's not being affixed, as I'm having the Spitfire being refueled by the Albion refueling truck as part of the diorama), my Mk. I Spitfire for my Battle of Britain diorama is DONE!  The Tamiya kit was fantastic, a real joy to put together!  I think this required the least filling and sanding of any aircraft kit I've ever built; always admire Tamiya's fit and finish quality.  The only thing I'd slightly complain about is that the Tamiya decals are awfully fragile; there were a few that got ruined.

Theuns,

That totally sucks.  I've always used good old Testors Gloss and Flat with no ill effects on enamels (works okay on Tamiya rattle cans as well).  I remember when I was a car guy, everyone got excited about Tamiya's clear sprays.  A couple of the car mags did articles on them and found out that if you didn't apply them within a couple of hours, you had to wait about a month for the color coat to totally cure before applying the gloss.  The reason for this was the curing rates became different enough after a couple of hours and gloss would actually crack as it dried (and this was over a Tamiya color coat).  Which is why I've never used them, plus on the cars I build a rubbed out top coat is more realistic.

Work on Tempest continues.  I got the masks today and applied them after I got off work.  They went on very quick and easy.  Hopefully the sheet I didn't use has the mask for the sky colored band at the tail.  Unfortunately, when I checked the paint locker I discovered I was out of Dark Green.  Looks like a trip to the hobby shop tomorrow. Pics to follow when I can get to a computer.

Damn, that is nasty.

Isn't Tamiya a lacquer based product, and don't play nice with enamels?  From what I've just read, you can spray enamel over lacquer, but not the other way around - lacquer is very hot and melts the enamels.

regards,

Jack

I have always heard that, but like Theun's, i use Alclad clear over enamels witout any issues, and i am sure thats lacquer. But when i have applied primer onto an area thats been painted, i get the same reaction he did.
