Hello All,
To the Hurricane Crowd . . .
Fred, I'm diggin all this micro-scratch-building. Cannon bays and Engine look nice - Ya just don't usually see that much work being put into most 1/72 tiny single engine fighter builds.
Doug, Nice little gem you've got there ! Nice clean antenna. What's your method for that ? In 1/72 I usually can't get mine to look that clean at the attachment points.
Andy, Pit looks nice !
And What ? Hurricane Steve is now brewing in North Africa ? Sweet !
Damien, The Mossie looks really nice, you've done a great job recovering the finish, and that fine original paint job comes through.
Beav, The smoothness of the finish with primer looks really good !
Soldier on guys ! I'm having a hard time noticing the problem areas you guys are talking about. I know how it is being the builder and seeing everything up close and un hidden - but seriously - both those builds look very good from this point of view.
"SMEH" - Ha ! That really did make me audibly laugh. (Not just one of those "lol's" that people type as a reflex after making a sniffing sound in their nose.)
Bobby, I wholeheartedly agree - those are three super unique, attractive aiframes. Love the Camo on the Vulcan. The Victor-Buc in-flight refueling dio is very impressive - especially with such large aircraft. Nice job with the hoses too. Guitar strings of various gages come in handy - I keep old strings around all the time for antennae, hoses, whatever.
So - I'm more than a bit disappointed in my Dullcoat. Trying to figure out how to recover from this one. I'll start by saying that it has been prettywarm and very humid here in Western NY last week. On top of that, the dehumidifier in my basement gave up the ghost at the same time (or at least gave up the refrigerant). So my work area has been damp. I was good - I let the future set for days, put on the decals, took care of the whitening and a little bit of silvering with a "paint over", gave another future coat and waited more days. The weather front came through to offer a little relief from the humidity - so I figured I could hit it with Dullcoat. Here's what I got . . .
Various degrees of "frostiness". I'm hoping some buffing and a second coat of dullcoat can bring it back to a normal dullcoat finish (after she gets dehumidified for a while).
It definitely had the effect of increasing the panel line darkening - it just didn't frost around the panel lines.
If the coating was a bit more subdued and more uniform - I'd let it go because in some spots it looks like a pretty convincing "fade" to the finish.
And then there's the decals . . . The fuselage roundels and codes bubbled up after the dullcoat was applied - and they didn't drop back when it all dried. I don't know if pricking them with a pin and applying future will work to suck them down now.
Too bad. I was really pumped about how this was looking after the last round of painting. I gotta try something after bringing her this far.
Chris
