Night  #2 of priming and all went well. I did expose many, many flaws which I am debating whether to "repair. Probably will and will probably make it worse! I am now referring to the Smer Supermarine Walrus as "sMEH"Indifferent because I have become quite ambivalent towards it.

Well it all moved along pretty fast and before I knew it, here she is completed...

Hello All,

To the Hurricane Crowd . . .

Fred,  I'm diggin all this micro-scratch-building.  Cannon bays and Engine look nice - Ya just don't usually see that much work being put into most 1/72 tiny single engine fighter builds.

Doug,  Nice little gem you've got there !   Nice clean antenna.  What's your method for that ?  In 1/72 I usually can't get mine to look that clean at the attachment points.

Andy, Pit looks nice !

And What ?  Hurricane Steve is now brewing in North Africa ?    Sweet !

Damien,  The Mossie looks really nice, you've done a great job recovering the finish, and that fine original paint job comes through.

Beav,  The smoothness of the finish with primer looks really good !

Soldier on guys !   I'm having a hard time noticing the problem areas you guys are talking about.  I know how it is being the builder and seeing everything up close and un hidden - but seriously - both those builds look very good from this point of view.

"SMEH" - Ha !  That really did make me audibly laugh.  Big Smile  (Not just one of those "lol's" that people type as a reflex after making a sniffing sound in their nose.)

Bobby,  I wholeheartedly agree - those are three super unique, attractive aiframes.  Love the Camo on the Vulcan.  The Victor-Buc in-flight refueling dio is very impressive - especially with such large aircraft.  Nice job with the hoses too.  Guitar strings of various gages come in handy - I keep old strings around all the time for antennae, hoses, whatever.

So - I'm more than a bit disappointed in my Dullcoat.   Trying to figure out how to recover from this one.  I'll start by saying that it has been prettywarm and very humid here in Western NY last week.  On top of that, the dehumidifier in my basement gave up the ghost at the same time (or at least gave up the refrigerant).  So my work area has been damp. I was good - I let the future set for days, put on the decals, took care of the whitening and a little bit of silvering with a "paint over", gave another future coat and waited more days.  The weather front came through to offer a little relief from the humidity - so I figured I could hit it with Dullcoat.  Here's what I got . . .

Various degrees of "frostiness".  I'm hoping some buffing and a second coat of dullcoat can bring it back to a normal dullcoat finish (after she gets dehumidified for a while).

It definitely had the effect of increasing the panel line darkening - it just didn't frost around the panel lines.

If the coating was a bit more subdued and more uniform - I'd let it go because in some spots it looks like a pretty convincing "fade" to the finish.

And then there's the decals . . .   The fuselage roundels and codes bubbled up after the dullcoat was applied - and they didn't drop back when it all dried.  I don't know if pricking them with a pin and applying future will work to suck them down now.

Too bad.  I was really pumped about how this was looking after the last round of painting.  I gotta try something after bringing her this far.

Doug - Superb, simple Superb! Excellent work on the Hurricane, I look forward Euro fighter.

Chris - Thank you for your kind words, your Hurricane is another excellent example, I feel your decal pain.

DasBeav - I truly feel your pain and frustration, I nearly smashed  my mossie against the wall on several occasions during the build, I decided to walk away and look at it on a new day. Besides your hassels it truly is inspiring to see another great build in progress.

Today is a sad day, today I place the completed sign on my De Haviland Mosquito NF Mk. XVII build.

Bish, thank you for allowing my to be part of some of the best builds I have seen to date.

So, here you go.

I wanted to wait for the parts to arrive for my "flocker" to l produce more realistic grass, but it was going to take weeks. The base isnt perfect, but first time round it isn't bad... Just need a little black paint around the base of the dioarama.

Just wish dirt and grime hadn't gotten on the inside of the canopy...

I had such a great time and I hate goodbyes, so if Bish and others can put up with my dummy spits I would like to add another build, what, I have no idea.

Thanks again,

Damian

I had a some what enjoyable time building her, I learned new skills, and still had not learned from past mistakes...

I may build another in time, but I have some really cool builds coming up that I'm egar to finish and/or start.

Hey Bish,

Thank you for your continued support for us less than perfect modellers out their.

But not bad for a convict...  But serisouly, I had a blast watching all the other builds come along and the results we have seen, are just Fantastic.

I will certainly be dropping in for a look on a regular basis until I decide on my next project for the RAF 100th Aniversery GB.

Catch you soon,

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the comments.  They were all fun kits to build.  I've used guitar strings for antennas before but hadn't even thought of using them for hoses and such.  They turned out pretty good.  The big E was perfect for the job.  LOL!

DasBeav: I know what you mean, I've been tempted to use a hammer in modeling a few times. Looks fine in your photos though.

Doug: She looks great! And the Eurofighter is cool.

Chris: Ouch! I've had some issues with humidity and finish coats too. Not sure what can do, maybe put her somewhere hot like a car (but not too hot!) and see if it will bake the frosting out of the dull coat? I have no idea what happened to the decals. A pin and decal setting solution ought to be your best bet.

Damian: She looks pretty darn good to me! Nice work! Yes

Doug, front page is now updated with your Hurricane.

As per a request from Damian, i am holding off posting his until he is able to get some outdoor pics of the Mossie.

Guys, i just want to thank you all for some outstanding work and outstanding commitment to the GB. Less than 3 months in and we have 15 completions already, and i know theres plenty more to come.

And there is already a nice spread from WW2 to modern and we have some nice early builds to come.

Great work all, thank you.

Guys... Thank you all so very much, The Euro fighter will go along with the Hurricane as part of the 75th Battle of Britian Commerative. Damian, Very cool looking Mossie!, ..

Chris. I've never seen decals do that after setting unless re-application of setting solution. What did you reduce the dull coat with? Something didn't react well... Any way, The antenna wire is E-Z line (Fine) and attaching is done with super glue. It is virtually an instant bond when it touches so be extra sure it attaches where you want.

Fred, Thanks, Cant wait to gut into it, Not many parts, but looks very well molded.

Thanks again all!, Doug

Hi Doug,

Rigidrider
What did you reduce the dull coat with?

Nothin !      It was straight from the rattle can per my standard operating procedure.

I put these decals down on a cured future surface and they seemed sticky enough at the time.  they seemed to settle into the ribbing just fine.  I probably should have put a drop of future under them just to add to whatever adhesive exists on the film.  I've done that in the past with good results - and if/when I ever use the rest of this decal sheet, I will definitely do it again.

Damian, another great looking Mossie to add to the finished roster.
I think the sparse vegetation works well with the camou colours. Yes

I love the Mosquito and the Hurricanes.

To eco DasBeav, I am working on a builders kit and its an adventure and a challenge.  But I got it all together and had filled all the minor cracks.  Now sanding and prepping it for paint and to install the eyelets for rigging.  Lots of little eyelets.

DB:  I'm unable to see the sadness in the photo you posted; still looks good from here!

Doug:  that is a very appealing Hurricane; exceptional!

Chris:  sorry to hear and see the decal issue; I haven't ever seen decals bubble up like that under a clear coat

damouav:  an outstanding and attractive Mosquito; well-done

Scott:  nice looking progress with the SE 5; how'd you manage getting the landing gear glued up at all the proper angles?

Thanks Gamera,  I will try that idea - I'll probably just put 'Ol Frosty in a sun exposed area in my house - and get 'er out of the basement for a while.  If a few days of that doesn't work - I'll probably just paint over the frosty parts like I did with the whitening and decal silvering.  And for the decals I'll try the accupuncture-future-injection combo.  I'm determined to get a decent 1/48 Hurricane out of this kit yet !

Good looking stuff everyone.

Here's my update. Although I have black based before without knowing it at the time, I'm trying it again this time with the molding. I noticed my airbrush has a bent needle so I'm not getting the tightest pattern but I think it turned out OK but I'm not sure it shows in the picture. I'm going to mask and paint the black tail and spine next.
