Interesting that you were having trouble with priming as I had the same thing, what primer did you use?

The Eduard F6F-3 Weekend Edition - WIP

Managed to get primer onto the plane last night.  I don't know why but my main airbrush (Iwata Madea) just wasn't happy, and performed terribly with the primer.  Eventually had to switch to another airbrush half-way through. I had to call it a day after that, feeling just too wiped out to continue.

As soon as I finish posting this update, I'm heading upstairs to start laying down color.  After that I have to put together the landing gear... which for some reason is incredibily detailed and has many fidley little parts.

The Ascender is looking very cool.  I agree, it was a design far ahead of it's time.  Looks like something Burt Rutan would have designed.

I'm planning on starting the Kiowa today but came down with a cold on Wed which is kicking my butt due to my Pulmonary Fibrosis. I may or may not get to it today depending on if I can get my temperature down and my caregiver/wife who is taking the day off to watch me, allows me to cut some plastic and run the air brush.

Lewbud, your ascender will be a fine acomplishment in 48 hrs!

My Graf Zeppelin is from Mark 1 Models, but might be a rebox of Revell's Hindenberg. The project certainly resembles the Hindenberg in that its a catastrophe - the GB might have to soldier on for another while without an airship... the clock's ticking!

For some reason I thought the Weekender kits came with the masks, but no photoetch and only one set of markings. Way to soldier on, looking forward to more.

Now for my little adventure.

Proof of life.  Started later than I planned, which may be a good thing in the end.

Most of the major pieces cleaned up.  First attempt at installing the pit.

Starting to look kinda sorta like an airplane.  Looks more like a whirligig at the moment.

I've always liked the Ascender.  It was one of those ideas that seemed plausible at the time, but the technology to make it a viable combat aircraft wouldn't exist for another 40-50 years.

MrStecks: The running gear on most kits is not that difficult. It only took about 2 hours on this kit; on a T95 however...

Great starts everybody! I would start tomorrow except there's a little thing called "The Game" Saturday. Next week Big Ten and Big12 championships. Definitely will be watching everybody and their builds. 

Enormous progress Mark, and well done for slogging it out. It does sharpen up your planning though, doesn't it :) I think I've quickened up my other builds with some of the lessons learned with this GB throughout the years.

The Eduard F6F-3 Weekend Edition - WIP

Well, I have to admit... I'm feeling pretty exhausted.  I never spend more than 2 or 3 hours in any given day modeling.  Right now I'm at about 7 hours.  Ugh.  Taking a break for some dinner, but have to get back at it this evening.  Really want to shoot primer tonight so I can start shooting color coats tomorrow.

But I made a lot of progress this afternoon.

Tailplanes came together nicely:

Unfortunately, I managed to scrape off two of the starboard guns with my thumb.  D'oh!  but I saved the bits, so I'll reattach at the end.

Another mishap...  as I was cutting the masks for the canopy, I heard a snap and noticed the windscreen had cracked right down the middle!  Arghhh.... 

There was another supplied with the kit, but in another style.  I presume it's for a different varient but it's going on this bird now.  Managed to get it masked without any more surprises.

And got the cockpit masked over:

Let's see, still have some fiddly parts that go into the wheel wells, then I can start priming.  I think I'm going to leave the engine and cowling off for now and temporarily tack the cowling in place when I start shooting color so the three color lines will line up right.  That way I can spray the inside of the cowling without having to worry about masking the engine.  That's the plan at least....   lol

Wow Tony, you want to do a 1/72 Zepplin for the weekend build? ;) Amazing, but at least you won't lose the propellors!

Great to see the builds racing along here, it is such a good feeling to have a model done in 48 hours given that I only put four together for the year

Very nice fit, Tamiya did a good job with this kit. The mold lines on the wheels were quite small and required minimal sanding.

 

Looking good Dutchman!  I've never built any armor, even as a kid.  Always been too intimidated by all that running gear.

Looking good guys! I started at 1100 CST, have most of the major parts cleaned up, the cockpit painted and installed. Pics will come when I get to work.  Keep it up and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Alright, 3.5 hours in and I'm feeling good.  Have made good progress... for me.  I normally build very slowly, so this 48hr thing is a totally different way of working.

Cockpit bits ready for paint:

Very basic cockpit put together.  (This is an OOB build, so no goodies to worry about):

Fuselage fit is good, except for this big ugly spot at the top of the spine behind the cockpit.  No other filler needed:

Fuselage done.  Very basic paint job for the engine, then glued up.  Cowling glued up but still need to work on the seams:

Time for a lunch break.  Next update hopefully in about four hours.

Very excited to put aside my personal problems, the still-unfinished P-47 Dottie Mae, and a load of stress, to take part in this 48 hour Group Build.  Here's the official kickoff picture.

'tis the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.... and some of the fruit is low hanging.

The kit has 48 pieces, I have 48 hours - success is a mathematical certainty!
