Doug, that looks outstanding! Yes

It was actually looking quite good at the start of the weathering stage.   So much so that it inspired me to pick up a 190 kit.

Merry Christmas to you, and to each and everyone of the members here.

regards,

Jack

OK... Finally got my build done this afternoon... I still dont have the replacement decal for the staffel marking but I'm sure it'll be here soon, Meanwhile, I will post these as finished for now..

Inside of the canopy done,

Fiddly parts (antennas and such) done...

And here she is...

I know its hard to see, but I do have the antenna wire ran through the canopy and internal mechanism.

Well, thats it for this one... Like our buddy Bish might say... I'm pretty chuffed with this one! Any way, To all my fellow builders and modelers, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a very prosperous New Year to all! See you in a week or two!

Doug

OH... PS, Sorry... Rooster, choice of finish pic is yours, and Thank you for hosting this GB and for the Great subject!

That's starting to really look the part Doug, your weathering brings it to life.

I've continued work on the 109, with an intention of getting it done this year.

Here, I've masked it up for RLM 65.

Light coat on RLM 65 on the fuselage sides to obliterate the overspray of the camo colours.

Reinstated the pre-shading to the fuselage sides.

I must have missed photographing it at this stage, sprayed it with Gunze RLM 65, then a slightly lightened tint in the middle of each panel.

Then I've sprayed the fuselage side mottle, trying to emulate the pattern that was on the real aircraft. I think it's a reasonable copy. It's quite a different pattern on each side.

I couldn't see that the mottle overlapped much on the upper surface colours, so maybe they had masked that before they sprayed the mottle. I've gone for that look.

I've since given it a couple of coats of Future, with any luck I can finish it this weekend.

I found that spraying the RLM 65 after the topside camo was good because I had less area to mask. I didn't really come up with a downside, but I've done it both ways in the past, and probably will in the future too.

Cheers

Tony

And a bit more from me...

OK, the oils had dried enough to work with, actually I didn't have to let it dry as much as I did. In previous pictures the paint was very heavy, I usually take a paper towel and put some paint thinner on it, daub it near dry, then start to drag it over paint until I get the results I want. If you take too much off, no biggie, just reapply.

Doing some of the dry brushing "chipping" and weathering...

Prop spinner painted and mounted.

Well thats it for now... Next I'll remove the canopy and do the work to it. I usually just place a dab or two of white glue to it to hold in place during paint. Pops right off when needed to...Thanks for looking! Take care all!

Tony... looking good! Can't wait to see the finish.

Nick... It'll be pretty flat. Thats what I was saying earlier about the mottle. I start out darker and as the paint progresses it gets flatter and lighter. Your 109 is looking goid!.

Sorry Jack, i meant the 4 didgit codes used on bombers, ground attack etc. I completely forgot about the factory codes.

4 digit code, that must be those aircraft delivery codes as found here:

http://pilotosdelaluftwaffe.tripod.com/lwmark.htm

... and also from that above link some more stuff already mentioned:

https://rhorta.home.xs4all.nl/luftwaff.htm

-----------------------------

One thing that should be mentioned is when expressing the nomenclature to use the right number style, meaning Roman numerals for the Gruppe, and regulars numbers for everything else.

Emblems and badges, yea that can be a bit difficult and probably the least consistant of the markings, partly because they were used less as the conflict wore on.

Jack

Jack - I am getting steadily less 'clueless' as we roll through this GB, thank you, its on my Pinterest page now

Doug, your 190 is looking terrific.

Quick update on my Japanese 109E. It's finally primed and ready for paint after several iterations of filling and priming.

Cheers

Thanks Jake, that is really useful. I'm not to bad with the 4 digit code system, but the fighter one has always had me confused, but its a lot simpler than it seems. I do have Vol 2 of Merricks Camo and markings but never checked the fighter code section, will have to read that properly.

I think the biggect confuseing think with fighters is not being able to ID a JG when no unit badge is visible, this is an advantage of the 4 didgit system.

Doug,  I hear ya, I have to look these symbols up from time to time as well.

Usually you can get away with switching the symbols out when the whole wing is flying the same type of aircraft, but with JG 3 and the Sturmgruppen concept, it's another story becasue they had the 109 equipping the first two or three groups in the escort role.

Jack

Hey Jack... Thanks for info as always... Like Bish, I'm a bit clueless when it comes to such markings, and even when you do find info, alot of times it comflicts with others. I had the 11Staffel wavy bar, but when I tried to apply it crumbled and I have to order some more, so to hold a spot I just put the straight one on for now. I try to keep it close when I state a certain aircraft , Gp, and staffel, but oft times fail miseribly. Its coming along though. Won't be much longer now.

Hi Bish, the graphic was found using image google search 'Luftwaffe tactical markings'.  The source of the photo only seems to be Pinterest.

It is a bit incomplete because it should include the colour blue when a gruppe is composed of four staffeln, ie. blue would be the colour code of the fourth staffle.   Also, I've also seen examples where brown was used instead of red.
