OK, I just wanted to make sure that I had read it right, But in Late war luftwaffe camo colors part three, By David Brown, (I hope I understood this right), but it stated that in the late stages of the war, due to the strain on the economy, the lack of raw materials to mfg, and to reduce the amount of coats of paint to cover due to the poor quality, primers were often used as camo to replace the RLM recommended colors. Or parts were shipped NMF.

I know this is the place for info, so any additional input would be welcome! Thanks guys!

Doug

Nice work Doug. I knew some aircraft had NMF unde4rsides, at least partly, not heard of the primer before. Nice info and it will make it different.

Tony - the 109 came out awesome! Very nice paint work. Thanks for a great addition to the GB!

Doug - I hadn't heard that about the primered underside before. It's coming along nicely!

Morning all! Well, we kinda had a snow thing this weekend, and was not able to get out much, (other then my wife wanting to build a snow man) so other then that I was able to get some work done. Took yesterday off to do a weekend build, while this project was setting up. Well, actually jumped back and forth between the two... But heres the progress...

Well, kinda like I had hoped for, seems were smooth, and just a slight smoothing with acetone and a Q-tip on the putty and no sanding was required.

OK, I was going to do the undersides and fuse sides in 76, but I started reading into it further, and found that most of the late war birds were sent out with primered undersides and sides and many (not all) were applied in field. So... Primered undersides.

Lately I have been using artist oils to weather with, so I'm applying the decals now so they receive weathering too. The setting solution takes tome to work, so... Were at a stopping point... Tis all for now,Thanks

Thanks Everyone.

Jack - you're right about the prop. For once it was easily fixable without damaging the model.

Interesting to note that the  fitting of the prop has a pin protruding from the cowling to mount the prop on, then the spinner fits over it. the prop blades are mounted on a ring that fits over the pin, but the ring is closed on one side which means it can only be mounted one way, which actually is back to front. I had noted it's odd appearance and then got distracted and forgot it, but Jack's comment brought it back into focus. I should have fixed it earlier, but its a very interesting 'blooper' from Academy. In the end I just trimmed and sanded it all, then flush mounted it with CA.

That, incidentally is my 3rd 1/72 109, as I like to build 'projects' of a minimum of five aircraft, there's a couple more to go, including the Japanese 109E I'm now working on,

It was also the fifth German type in French markings, so that 'project' has reached maturity at least. There might be a few more to come...

Cheers

Tony

WA,

Wonderful work on both of those 109's. I really like the float plane. On the 109G did you mask off the nose cone, or free hand it?

Tony, very smart looking scheme - beautifully executed. Yes

Hope I'm wrong, but something looks odd about the prop, is it on backwards?

Jack

I got my French 109E-3 done. It's the Academy kit with Berna decals, which are niiiice. I hope you like it. I've ordered some aftermarket wing cannons, but  Ithought I might as well post it now.

FWIW, it's a relatively easy kit to build, I'd happily build another if I come across it.

Cheers

Hey Nick... Its going to be 76 (light blue) as you said underside and up the sides of fuse, 71 (dunkel grau) I believe and 74 (Grau Grun) late war on wings and fuse spine in a soft camo pattern, Not sure what its called, "landscape" maybe, like splinter but rounded and dunkel grau  motteling. I saw a pattern in a book I have and really liked it. There will be a blacked out area at the exhaust areas boardered in red, with a white and red campaign stripe on the fuse. This was the colors of 11/Jg3 Bomber defense, late fall 1944. Oh, and the spinner will be black green with a yellow spiral. Kinda ambitious but do-able. Another couple days before rally digging into paint!

Take care!

Andy... Thanks, and Yes... I usually have the model nearly totally assy. before painting, I've tried various ways and found that either the colors aren't matched due to forgetting a step (my painting gets pretty involved) lol... or I make a glue spot during assy, or a variety of other issues go wrong. So like on the gear doors and such I just install, then hold a little slip of something up to item that I dont want paint on, and just touch up if it does. I've seen people completely paint while still on the sprues THEN assy, fuselage, wings, everything! Don;t know how they manage that.

Waggish... Very nice finishes on both! You paint work is top notch, Bravo!...

Take care all... should have more progress tomorrow! Thanks again!

Right, when looking/comparing the RLM colours between the two 109 sets of photos, I detect a hint of red on the model displayed against blue background.

Depending on your camera, you can preset the white meter by reading just the backdrop. This should disable the auto detect for the white.

Jack

Waggish, beautiful pair of 109's  there. Yes

I like the white background, but what you can do is when you edit the photos add a thin black border (or any colour you prefer).

regards,

Jack

I also prefer the whiet background- the problem isn't the white itself, it's the way my camera reads the RLM 74/75/76 scheme when it's on white. The one on the blue is much closer to how they look IRL, while the colors on the white have gone funny.

Finally got pictures of both of them! I took the 109W pics first, then realized that the white background was not agreeing with this color scheme, so I switched the background to the only blue thing I had on hand, and the G-10 pics came out a lot nicer.

For the 'main pic' or whatever, the first picture of each subject would be best.

Doug - Really nice start, looks like a good clean fit! I see you have attached alot prior to painting (like the landing gears). Is that your normal process?

Tony - Good start. It'll be interesting to see the 109 with the Japanese markings.

Hunter - I don't envy you for the sanding that is in your futureIndifferent

Doug,

Yes, it is a 72nd scale AirFix kit from the old tooling I believe. I got two for $5.00 so I thought what the heck. I normally purchase 1/48th and rarely have any issues. I can't complain too much for what I paid for them LOL.

Hunter, Thanks! Yeah, so far so good on this one, I've had very few issues with Dragon kits. Man, I hate it for ya on that gun cowling. I think you said that its a 72nd airfix? Well, if its an older kit I could see the fit issue. But the new tooling Airfix have improved drasticly. I did an Airfix 72nd Hurricane recently , new tooling, in the "red box" and it was a dream to build. And I just don't do 72nds, and am doing fewer 48ths as of late. Don't think its me getting older Sad, lol... I just like the 32nds more now... Well thanks again, and Endever to persevere!

Crown, That splinter came out great, its not as easy to do as it looks.

Aerogrill   The "D" came out nice and clean! I'm a big fan of the "Dora" very slick looking!

Rooster... Your paint is perfect! Looking good!

Well a bit more from me...

Cowling and engine on AFTER I turned the control stick around correctly! Embarrassed.

Wings assy...

Wings on and actually fit pretty nicely. There was a very slight step between the wing root and the fuse, so instead of trying to insert a spreader (would have been a bit difficult) in the fuse, I just ran a seam of tape on both sides and put some putty in the step. Just a q-tip with some acetone (Nail polish remover works well) on it to smooth with was all it took. Don't think any sanding will be required.Maybe...

And the legs are in place.

Thats about it for now... Take care all, and keep up the great work!

Crown - your camo looks spot on, nice work.

Hunter - good luck with that 190.

Whilst I'm putting the finishing touches on my 1/72 French 109, and hence keeping you waiting for the 'glory shots', I've made a start on my next 109, which is the Hasegawa 1/72 109E-7 in Japanese Army markings. I'm building it for the Japanese GB, but I'll cross it over into here.

This was the kit box:

Current progress:

I'm almost ready to close up the fuselage. I just need to blank off the lower fuselage intake and paint around that area. This one is less detailed than my previous 109, but I've added a few left over parts from the photoetched set I used for it, including rudder pedals which look much better. The harnesses this time are just tape, as they're  very visible but hard to see in detail through the canopy framing, I chose not to buy aftermarket for them.

Cheers

Tony

Hello everyone,

I got to work alittle today...I spent most of the time doing putty work and painting the final small pieces. Tomorrow I will sand down everything and get the paint on.

In the photo below I encountered this on my original build. Not sure if it's the tooling or what but there was a large gap.

Be back soon...
