Pride of the Luftwaffe GB

Well, I'm calling this one complete.  There's still more weathering and other details I plan on adding, but my focus has already shifted to my next build so this is done... for now. 

(FULL DISCLOSURE:  The aerial in these photos was added in Photoshop.  I have some EZ-Line on order but didn't want to wait a week to post these pics.  I'll post a follow-up picture when it's "legit".)

Thoughts on this kit.  It fought me pretty hard, and a couple weeks ago I was very close to throwing it in the trash.  I'm glad I didn't, and I thank the folks on this forum for their encouraging words.  I'm very pleased with how it came out (even though the mis-alligned cowl still bothers me) and it's earned a place on my display table.

Doug- Amazing dio. Reminds me of one I saw in the early issues of FSM or was it Shep's dio leaflet? Been too long to remember which one.

Toshi- Off to a good start.

Falcon- Very ingenious to use a mottling template. Looks very good.

Crown- A beauty in the making!

Mark- You killed it dude! That is one great looking FW. And by the by, you will love using EZ line.

My Dora is completed and in my display cabinet. Maybe later I will add a base for it but who knows.

Thoughts on the kit.........Very enjoyable to work on with great parts fit. Hasegawa provides the foundation for a Dora and you go from there. My only beef is that they should incorporate at least partial rivetting specially for the fuselage. The side stripes on the fuselage actually do not line up as one is higher than the other one (notice the chevron is a bit higher). A picture of the actual aircraft shows this detail.

The salt chipping effect

Weathering was done with washes and dot filters

Oil paint dots are wiped with a thinner damp wide brush in the direction of the air flow.

Just about all is removed but just a hint blended in to give tonal value to the paint leaving subtle streaks.

The pipes were carefully hollowed out and painted several Alclad shades till I got the desired effect then polished them with a rag.

The tip lights were painted Tamiya clear green and red

and inserted into the tip openings. They look like real lights so Hasegawa scored high points here.

Mark, that looks very good, and would never had guessed the photo shop had you not mentioned it.  Hopefully the positive comments urge you on towards the finishing touches.

Mark - that came out really nice! Really like the job you did on the decals. That style German cross can be very difficult to apply without silvering. Nicely done and thanks for taking part!

PJ - That Dora came out awesome! All the extra work you put into it really brought it all together. Thanks for showing how you went about everything, it adds a lot to the GB. Love the aerial wire details and the subtle streaking came out really good! Thanks for a great addition to the GB.

Stunning job there PJ, really makes me wish i had put that little bit extra into mine, it really pays off. Love the effects of the dot filtering.

I notice in you WiP thread that you mention you have another to do, so just one suggestion if i may. The prop blades on these were wood and not metal.

I thought about the wood use on some propellers and flaps on some aircraft. I kept seeing the metal chips on the model pictures I saw so it's a common mistake made by modelers.

Sure enough I should have taken a quick look at my Kookaburra book listing a constant speed hydraulic VS 111 wood blade. The prop is not attached and will be easy to correct. I saw one picture of the actual prop and the chipping was in a reddish tone thinking it was the red oxide primer they used. Thanks for the correction.

No worries PJ. Basic rule with German props, if its thin its metal if its wide its wood. I would not worry to much about changing it, but if its an easy fix, then why not.

Hey guys, I started a seperate discussion topic to ask this but thought I would check here to - does anyone know if there is a Fw190 F 1/32 resin seat on the market? I've looked for one but haven't had any luck so far. I was hoping to find one with the molded belts. I just never have much luck with getting PE to look good.

About the  190 F seat, I can't find anything either.

Though not what you were looking for, what about the  cloth belts?  My only reservation in suggesting this product is I've seen it mentioned that people had problems fitting the belts through the metal pieces - maybe this is just HGW product?

There is build review here, and they used RBproductions and I did not notice them stating any problems putting the belts together:

I was curious about the HGW belts. They look great. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Rooster I used them on my Dora. Go back in the build and you will see how they go together. I personally do not like how they are assembled. They need to be cut but the lines that are marked as guide makes the belt too wide to fit thru the buckles so you have to go back and re cut them. The back sides are not painted so you need to get rid of the ugly white color.

They look ok once assembled but rather use the pe ones, just MHO. 

A slight correction:

The Dora used the Junkers constant speed hydraulic VS 111 wood blades. The metal chipping was carefully painted over with a combination of Vallejo new wood and dark brown paints mixed and thinned with wather so they flowed into each tiny chip, applied with a 10/0 brush. Once dry a 8000 pad was used to polish out the bades.

Andy, i have used the HGW belts a few times and do like them. But as mentioned, if you cut on the dotted line as suggested they are to wide. They do have a new range out which i have not tried yet which are already cut except for a small tab at either end. I am hoping they are a better fit.

And yes, only printed on one side, so need to be positioned carfeully.

The positioning is one of things that interest me about the HGW belts. I can never get PE to look good and I always end up with a CA glue mess lol!

I use Aleenes after the pe belts are bent and shaped. Eduard makes one with a textured finish that is super easy to work with and looks super.
