Shelf of Doom GB II - 2018

Academy 1/72 P-47D with Superscale 72-721 decals, the aircraft flown by Lt Raymond Knight in 1945. Model started in 2012, completed today.

This is the 8th model we've rescued from the Shelf of Doooooom !

Steve - Love the Comet. Thanks to another friend of mine I've just got myself hooked on those little Matchbox armor kits. I plan to use the kit supplied bases, but really doll them up if I can.

John - I agree, that kit is jinxed. Don't store it in a bedroom, it will probably come out at night. I use and eruse blue-tac all the time, but when I'm going to use it for masking, I always make sure I've got a fresh piece with no paint residue in it. It seems to get tackier. My suggestion is to try a different brand.

Bish - That looks good. I built a Schwimmwagen in the early 2000s and really enjoyed it. You just took me right back there.

Jack - I like your Chev, it looks quite smooth in the photos but you're the best to judge it. It's so good to see some cars being built in these GBs. For some reason I can't spray Future without getting a pebbly finish, but I can brush it ok.

I hope to finish my P-47 today. Yippeeeeee !

That's going to look great Bish. You just reminded me, I have a 1/48 Hasagawa F-18 and 1/350 Dragon Spruance DD back in Boise that I probably have'nt touched in 18 years. When I move back I need to crack those puppy's open. I'm sure the decals have long turned bad.

The Comet is coming along. The tracks were missing so much that I'm going to have to get creative for the base.

Been working on the Tiger dio last few days, starting on the Scwimmwagen. This is how i left it almost 10 years ago.

With a few bits from an Aber PE set, i got it built, painted and now ready for some light weathering.

Also got some done on the Verlinden building. The brickwork and great stone work had already been painted, so i have given it a couple of coats of white and some dark yellow on the wood.

Oh man that stinks John. Just when you think you got it figured out bam you get a curveball. I know the feeling bud.

How unfortunate. That camo, otherwise looks great. I used Blue Tac White on my Type 4 camo. It did leave a residue, but I was able to get it off by dabbing the Blue Tac on it.

Checking in here with my Coke 57 Chevy Bel Air.I got her masked and sprayed the chrome on the trim. I tried to use this new (to me) Alclad product and it was thicker than I liked so I tried brushing futures on a car for the first time and it really didnt settle the way I wanted. I have now airbrushed it once with futures and think I will hit it once or twice more to make sure the surface gets a smooth as possible. I seem to have better luck with the AB and futures for some reason.

I need to strip the chrome pieces and get to work on those also.

Elmer's -Tack.  Used it on my spitfire with great success.  Maybe this new batch is hotter or something.

The curse continues...  I used this exact same method on a Tamiya Spitfire a couple months ago and it came out great.  This time - maybe the newer sausge material (same brand Elmer's adhesive tack) interacted with the paint in two nasty ways.  Lifted the flat tan, and melted/stained the brown.  I'm going to put this back on the shelf for a couple weeks and let whatever is happening gas out.  I can only think to light sand it and go to Mr Toshi's school of brush painting to see if I can touch this up.  I really hate this model!

John- I have that same Kfir kit under my bench,  I should include it in this GB.  my cockpit was short shot so I had to scratch build half of it.  And the intake in front of the rudder is way too fat needs to be very narrow and triangular.  these are just few of the reasons I shelved that one like 20 years ago!

Way to go on your camo,  I really like Israeli camo,  but making it sun bleached is a art

Good system Nick, it's working perfectly. I like to use 'incompatible' paints in that way too, so that there is no interaction. The Zeke looks great.

Keavdog, like your Kfir, I''ve got some in the stash that I must get to. 

Bruce btw I use Tamiya acrylics with oil based paints on top.

Bruce On a glossy surface I thin oil paint w/turpenoid apply let dry for 30-45 min (oil paints let awhile to dry) rub w/ dry qtip in direction of airflow.

May I ask your technique on how you will dirty up this Zero? I believce you metioned using an oil wash on the F4F, which turn out fantastic.

Bruce and Nick both of your projects are looking great. Two different subjects with excellent painting and weathering teqniuqes.

Ok, a quick update on the Type 4. I finished the dot filter with Wilder oil paints. I'm really liking how these Wilder product work. Granted, I still need to get used to them. 

Here are a few pictures.

Next will be a pin wash, but I figured I would get the tools and exhaust installed. Then do some chipping and a few mild rust spots. More to come...

I have been doing some work on my Tiger dio while trying to resist throwing my MiG for the Commonwealth GB into the bin. Hope to get some pics up at the weekend.

Nice job there John, i am going to have to get myself one of those eggplanes one of these days.
