I was thinking there were two air attacks but had to look it up.

HMS Victorious did launch the first air attack, only one of nine torpedoes hit the Bismarck amidships in her armoured belt doing only minor damage. One German sailor was thrown into a bulkhead from the blast hard enough to kill him and five others were injured. Victorious and her escorting cruisers were running low enough on fuel they had to break off after this one attack.

You're right, I should have done a little research before I typed that. I thought the Victorious had a hand but the Ark Royal was the only one to launch the attacks.

That would mean the Tamiya kit is either 810 or 820 squadron.

I wasn't 100% sure if there had been a carrier involved earlier in the chase. But i think that was one of the reasons Force H was sent from Gib to help hunt the Bismarck, because H had a carrier.

I have no idea how the code system works for RN aircraft, seems to be sompletly different from the RAF.

Steve, as far as i know there was only one carrier involved in the attacks on the Bismarck, the Ark Royal. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

I'm starting the stingbag. I have been looking forward to this build for a while because it has most of what I like. It's British, it's a biplane, and it's Navy. I purchased the Tamiya PE set and Eduard IP and belt set. I will be using the "Bismarck attack" markings but I can't find any info for 2P/V4372 so I don't know which carrier it was stationed on.

Jack: I had thought about spraying a light coat of blue over the roundels to tone them down a little for a more faded look before you pointed out them being off colour. I like the wash idea though. Going to stare at the model a few days and then come up with a plan to proceed here.

Thanks again!!!

Cliff, I can echo the feeling, and same thing can and has happened to the reference library when new information comes to light.

What you may want to try is to mix up a thin wash of dark blue paint, using it as a filter to both slightly darken and numb the vibrancy of the current decals.  I'd suggest something acrylic based, and add a drop of dish soap to prevent it from pooling (painting over a matt clear coat would also help in this regard).

Whichever you decide, look forward to seeing more...

regards,

Jack

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My apologies if you guys heard me screaming all the way in Canada and the UK.... Bang Head

It was bound to happen. No problems in construction, the paint went down without any issues, one broken part and no lost ones.... the modeling gremlin HAD to screw me over somewhere...

Jack, a thousand thanks for your help here. Don't think I'm not grateful. But I really, really don't feel like either trying to soak the decals off or repaint half the model. I'm going to think this over. I might pick up the Ventura decals and see if the roundels are the same size as the Rising ones- in which case I'll just lay them over the originals. Otherwise I may just finish her and chalk her up as a learning experience.

The Rising sheet also has a NZ P-40. THANKS for letting me now ahead of time so I won't use those too!!!

Cliff, I really like the Kiwi Corsair you have going here.

If you do plan to purchase another decal set, might want to look at another brand.  As research goes, the light blue/torquoise appearance of their national insignia is considered inaccurate and really should be (when faded) based on a dark blue.  A suggested decal set would be from Ventura:

Thanks Bish! Flightdecs Canada has the sheet listed as in stock so if I have to I can always order another set.

They're really nice decals, on the left wings the roundels barely show the stars where the New Zealanders painted over the US markings. I'll try to remember to photograph them when I hit the whole thing with matte varnish, they're kinda hard to see all shiny.

Well, I got most of the decals on. Unfortunatly there was a small set of masks in the package and they stuck to the decals and torn some of them. Possibly my fault, I might have pulled out the masks and stuck them back in there on top of the decal.

Then when applying the number codes to the landing gear doors one stuck I tore it all apart trying to move it. Oh well, I'll see what I can do...

John, that is one loveky looking build, and lots of great info there. I had not realised that Schuftie is an Arabic word, though i guess i should have done. Its a word we use in the Uk quite often, especially in the army. I guess the Ozzies must have taken the word on board as well from their time in the Middle east.

Cheers John, will get the front page updated.

Martin, it's the Hasgawa 1/48 kit.  I finished it up yesterday, so here are the completion photos.  And a link to the progress photos.

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/179738.aspx

This below is a link to a pdf of the wrap-around masks I made for British pattern camouflage for the short tail P-40's from the P-40D on.  There is a photo of the masks at the end of this post.

http://goldeneramodel.com/mymodels/p40/3p40/0113ap40.html

The markings are for a P-40E-1 flown in the defense of Darwin by RAAF F/L Les Jackson.  Schuftie is Arabic for "have a closer look".  I have made it a habit to make two sliding canopy sections, one vacuform for posing with an open cockpit and the other the kit canopy for closed cockpit photos.  The kit canopy seldom rests right in the open position.  The masks required are quite different.  On the Squadron canopy the left and right sides are also different, and there was no upper longitudinal framing at all.  Those masks were made by photographing the canopies, tracing over them in Autocad, and cutting them with a Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter.  There are always adjustments to be made so paper patterns are printed and tried until everything is happy.  The decals came from the ProModeler P-40E kit and look nice when done but took very careful handling to keep them from breaking up.  A few required touch up.  The bead sight is made of fine music wire, I despaired of ever holding on to the tiny plastic part long enough to clean up the sprue gate remains, and it immediately flung itself into space anyway.  Easier anyway to super glue in the wire and cut it to length when the glue is cured.

John: What you posted of her looks great, would love to see more!

Anyway, I was distracted by our club's IPMS show the last couple of weeks but I finally got back to the Corsair. I wasn't crazy about how she was coming out so I finally decided to just go back and repaint the whole thing. She might be a little dark but I'm hoping the weathering will lighten her up some.

Martin, I have a question.  I'm currently building a Hasegawa P-40E which I have been posting in the aircraft section.  It occured to me as I put the roundels on that it is an Australian airplane.  At this late date can it be included here?

You would think I would have thought of this soonerSurprise

Brandon, thats impressive paint work freehand on a 1/144 aircraft, very tight spray pattern.

Jack, thats an interesting scheme for a JAg, nice work.

Cheers

Tony

Nice to see the GB is back. Don't know about anyone else, but I just got a load of msgs dated August 19 even though they cover periods weeks older. (Which confused me - one of them was the 100th Anniversery RAF GB which I checked in thinking it was this build - and it looked like months of stuff was gone.) Still, according to my "Email Notifications" I am not subscribed to any forums. Got my fingers crossed.

Things look good here - the real world has really slowed me down but now I've got some incentive to get back to the Desert AF Tomahawk. Can check in on the other builds too.

Here are my completed pics of the Jaguar Gr.1 in the winter scheme. I took a few photos with a white back ground and a few with black for contrast. Good kit with few problems other than some confusion with decals. All in all a fun build and thanks for letting me join in on this group build!

Ok, I got the paint down on the 1/144 Tempest last night. I freehanded the camo colors and just shot it all in one go, starting with the green. Paints are Tamiya, and I couldn't find my Medium Sea Gray, so I just shot the underside with Royal Light Gray, since it's close enough.

This morning, I added the decals, and I just shot a flat clear on it. Next up is painting the exhaust, then doing some exhaust staining before moving on to the prop and gear. Then she'll be done.
