Ernest-Love the camo job on the Ha-Go-great build

Lewbud-the slicks are the tampo printed but came with the kit-everything else is from the original 60's AMT kit, re-released over the years by Model King and now back as AMT-felt very nostalgic-build the '67 Chevy II Funny Car back in the late sixties while in grade school-first experience with spray cans-it was one of my favorites.

Scott-hope you're feeling better-looking forward to your build-there's a Monogram kit in the stash for me if I can clear time before the end of the year.

All-thank you for the encouragement-hopefully this is the spark that gets me started again....

Six completed builds so far, great job guys!

I had planned to build my SBD this weekend but a severe ear infection forced me to change that plan.  I hope to get on it next weekend.  I really, really, want to build this old Monogram kit in the worse way.

Great job on the Mustang!  Are the tires from the tampo printed Parts Packs? I used a set of the Blue Streak drag slicks on a Sox and Martin GTX and they really popped.

You're welcome guys. As I say at the end of the build, it's you guys that make the build so thanks to all of you.  As for future builds, I look forward to seeing them.

I should be starting my second attempt on Friday after I wake up from my overnight shift.  Not quite sure what I'm going to build yet.

Oh wow, the Ha Go turned out great Buffelhead . It's fun to pull off all that Sillyputty for the final reveal.

Really enjoying the different builds in this GB!  Great job everyone!

DasBeav, Congrats on a great Looking La-5. Too bad Georgia lost but the Sooners and Buckeyes both won with the Sooners in the playoffs so not a totally bad weekend for you.

Bob, All I can say about that Mustang is WOW. And all in 48hrs!

Bufflehead, That is a super job on such a little tank. Such a camo scheme would have scared me off. Nice work.

I didn't know about the libation tradition. I'll have to remember that after the next build. Maker's Mark for me. 

Also, Bufflehead, you must single. My wife wouldn't let me go hungry of course she wouldn't let me eat at the work bench either.

DasBeav - yeehaw!  The La-5 is done and looking fantastic!  Honestly I can't see any cat hairs or dust on it!  Too bad about the football games, but at least something good came out of it!.  BTW, I really like that two tone grey color scheme on the La-5

Bob - always a pleasure seeing your builds!  Gotta luv that Ford Funny Car!!  You did a great job on it...can't believe you did such a great job in less than 48 hrs! 

And call this little Ha-Go DONE!  Big thanks to Steve (modelcrazy) for his tip with the multi-tone camo and silly putty!  Once I got over that hurdle, everything else went as planned.  BTW, once I pulled off all that silly putty I was amazed how the camo looked, given the fact that I was speeding through the painting process. Something of a tradition to celebrate the successful completion of a Weekend Madness build with a shot of your favorite libation!  This year it was the XO that I hadn't touched in a while (been favoring Basil Hayden's bourbon lately).  Here are the rest of the pics:

Overall the Tamiya kit (Fine Molds makes the tank parts) is decent.  The only real letdown is the vinyl tracks.  I know very little about this vehicle and have almost no reference material....I think it can be improved with AM parts, but honestly, if given the choice I think the Dragon kit is probably the better choice nowadays unless cost is an issue.  I'm happy with the results of the build except the decal on the starboard side of the hull (#1556) has some silvering on it.  Oh well, there's always another kit!!

Lewbud my man, thanks to you for hosting another great Weekend Madness GB.  I MIGHT (Big Might) do another build before the end of the year if I can work it in!

Bufflehead, glad I could help although it sounds like you already remembered the sequence. Me and Mr Hobby paints don't get along. They look like they will be so good but they always spit in may AB. It doesent seem to matter the thinner/air pressure mix. I'm slowly replaceing them with other brands. Too bad to, most of my RLM colors are Mr Hobby.

Hey all-great work guys-I'm going to carve out time tomorrow to review in detail but it looks like everyone is progressing nicely.

Edit-took time and caught up-DasBeav-great job on the La-5-looks like a fun build-how was the Hobby Craft kit? And you're right-modeling fast seems counter productive, but it is fun and forces me to actually complete something.

Ernest-your Ha-Go is progressing nicely-good subject-interesting, not seen often here.

Yesterday was a bit of a distaster regarding time management-too many activities but this was the best weekend schedule wise before Christmas-ok, enough whining...I did get the decals on Saturday morning-Slixx decals-no issues

FWIW, our cat's name is Jake-my wife loved the decals

After that, I didn't get to do anything until this morning-

Fit on this kit requires a lot more attention than I was able to give it...anyway, moving forward-

I'm glad this one is done-I built a similar AMT Funny Car back in the '60s-happier with the results but I figure it will be pulled apart and used for parts at somepoint.

Third, I would like to thank Qbert and Otis, my new kittens, for getting just enough cat hair and dust on my plane. My fault actually, forgot that first step of painting and making sure the plane was dusted before ABing. Hadn't had my Diet Dr. Pepper yet in the morning.

First, I would like to thank LewBud for running this GB. This masochistic approach to modeling is quite fun, actually. I will participating again during the coming weekends. (with something very simple and basic, WWToons tank? who knows?)

Second, I would like to thank Time Warner/Spectrum for anticipating my modelling responsibilities and leaving me without cable or internet for four hours. I would have just wasted the day watching the Cleveland Brown's and never completing this build.

....And with minutes to spare, I consider this build finished! For a cheap little kit I got off Ebay there were no serious fit issues. If I find another one I would build it again. You could easily make it a real nice plane. The bad part was like Dutchman's tank, no guide holes and bad instructions with arrows pointing to general area. The air ducts and prop blades may or may not be off center. I refuse to really look. I have suffered enough disappointment with this kit.

Bufflehed, for multicolor camos using Sillyputty you have to think backward. Whatever the last color they sprayed IE yellow, green etc, you spray first. Add the Sillyputty to cover that color, in the typical case of a Japanese tank perhaps the yellow stripes, Then spray the next color, perhaps green. Mask again, over the first masking and complete the process until almost the entire subject is covered. In my case, for my 1/72 Ha Go, I hand painted the yellow stripes but it was so small I could get away with it. Leave the previous mask on and apply more over it for the next color. It's a trip when you remove all of it at once.

I hope this is new information for you and it helps. In your case it looks like a yellow, brown, Lt brown, green sequence

 

Steve, you are a life saver!!  I knew that was the process, but I must have had brain fog last night after so much time at the bench!!  This morning I attacked the paint job with renewed vigor using your advice and the work has gone much smoother!  One last application of putty over the green so I can lay the final coat on and the camo is done!

Like DasBeav I realized some things on this build, especially about Silly Putty:

1. Silly Putty is tough to work with!  Took me many attempts to figure out how to manipulate it into the right shapes.

2. Keep your fingers OFF the putty once its on!  Even slight pressure makes it squish out of the shapes you just worked hard to establish!!

3.  Don't let the blob or roll of putty touch a the wrong spot on piece that's already on!

4.  I found two items particular handy with shaping the putty...the rubber part of an eyedropper and a bamboo BBQ skewer. 

5.  I'm not as fast or organized as I think I am!

6.  Go with your instincts.  After the Mr. Hobby khaki base coat I switched to Tamiya Acrylics for the other colors.  The Mr. Hobby paint was tough to spray, not sure why.  I originally planned to mix Tamiya acrylics to match the Mr. Hobby set, but was "swayed" by the idea of using lacquer based paints.  DOH!!

Things I have learned this weekend.

1. I need new Silly Putty and more of it.

2. Masking and Air-brushing fast leads to a @#$%load of mistakes. IE: over-spray,etc.

3. Modelling fast seems extremely counter-productive, yet still fun.

4. I suck at modelling.

Unfortunatly, I was not able to finish in time, the build took a good bit longer than expected due to all of the filling, the face that the instructions did not match, and there were no guide pins or markings to show where the parts went. I finished most of the painting aroung midnight, and my alarm clock did not go off in the morning. I will still finish this build and will try again with a different subject when I have the time again.

Ahhh...I'm officially behind schedule!  I wanted to have all the camo painting done and a coat of future applied before the day ended, but all I have is a base coat and the start of the camo.  TBH, I struggled with how to apply the 3 tone camo.  Originally I planned to use Silly Putty as masking for the hard edge camo, but couldn't figure out how to do two colors with it.  All I've ever done was one two tone camo....sigh.  I'm calling it a night and will regroup in the morning.

 and I broke off one of the return roller mounting pegs!!!

The primer was a bit tasty though!!

Looking good Ernest!  Just remember, primer is like pie (just not as tasty). There's always time/room for pie.

What's that burning smell? Oh yeah, that's DasBeav burning the midnight oil to make sure his plane gets done on time! I appreciate the asking, but no. C'mon man you can do this! I got faith in ya!

Whew!  I WAS on schedule....who would have thought that it would take most of the day to finish the assembly of this little Ha-Go??  The tank sprues are from Fine Molds, but don't let the name fool you!  The molds are anything but fine!  Lots of flash, mold seams and sloppy fitting parts.  Still with some TLC it can turn into a fine model.

So its 4:45 PM Pacific Time and assembly is finally done and I can get it into the paint booth.  In the pic I removed the roadwheels so I could mask them for painting.

For the camouflage paint job I'm going to use this set from Mr. Hobby.  Its a lacquer based paint so I won't need to primer the model (I hope).  I've had it for a while so I figure its time it was used!

The vinyl tracks had a bit of twist in them.  To straighten them out I pinned the tracks to a piece of cardboard with a wee bit of stretch and hung them from the ceiling near my wall heater.  It gets pretty warm up there so the gentle heat should help them straighten out.

I need some dinner before tackling the paint job!!

Just finished painting the bottom. It is a really bright VJMA Russian Blue. Also on there pretty thick because I was in a hurry. I have to wait 'til tomorrow morning to finish the top. Off to watch the Buckeyes and hope Georgia wins. Oh, and the Committee hates 'Bama as much as the rest of America. And BTW, is it allowed to PhotoShop the decals in? Asking for a friend.
