John: I thought I had some Alclad thinner but when I looked I didn't have any of that either. So I grabbed some laquer thinner and used it. Not a big fan of the stuff, I think it's melted the seals in a previous airbrush but sometimes I use it as the 'atomic option'. It's so hot it will clean up pretty much anything.

Will get some photos up when the paint gets here and I get some actual work done on her.

That’s no fun; but that’s good about Sprue Bros. Will await pictures of your plane when you finish up painting it! YesBig Smile

What do you use to thin the Alclad and clean it out of your air brush, by the way?

Well, I started applying the aluminum paint to the F-51D along with a Zero I'm building. Seems the cap on the Alclad bottle didn't seal well and the solvent had evaporated out of the bottle leaving me with some thick sludge. I tried spraying it and it just made a mess. So I went and ordered some more Alclad aluminum from Sprue Brothers at 10:30 EST. Got an email this morning at 9:30 that the order had been filled and shipped. Sorry a bit off subject but I like to give some recognizion for excellent customer service.

Good start! What’ll be your method for masking its wheels?

freem: An F-80 from the eighties, eh? ;) Have fun with the build!

John, most likely I'll paint the rubber a black/gray color and use a circle template like this one to mask off the rubber and paint the rims OD.

If none of the holes fit I'll use my Olfa circle cutter to make a few masks from tape

Happy 2020 all!

I finally started the Dragon 1/35 M-26A1.  I was out of town all last week for work, but brought the kit along to keep me company!  Managed to build up the suspension and a little bit of the lower hull:

This tank's suspension is a bit complex.  Took a bit of dry fitting to figure everything out.  Also the instructions called out the opposite part #s for the swing arms with shocks. Switching them was the key.  The front and rear needed some shims to fill gaps when the upper hull is fitted. Here it is with the upper hull and road wheels dry fitted.

Travelling again this week and the kit is coming with!  Hope to have a little more done by the weekend.

Here is the 1/48 Monogram F-80.  See if I can overcome the notorious step between the wing and fuselage.

Hope the decals are still good, I've had the kit since the mid-eighties!

That looks sharp Ernest, after all those suspension arms the rest of the kit can't be that much work!

Thanks, CB, it was an enjoyable build.  Now I have to go back to reality and build an Italeri Horsa.

Looks like the F-84G is a wrap.  A few years ago (August 2008, does time fly or what!) I built an F-86E in Robbie Risner's markings and it's a natural companion to this F-84G so you'll have to look at a few pictures of them together.

This Tamiya F-84 is a great kit, highly recommended.  I had a Verlinden and a CMK resin set and I used one resin part and two PE parts from them, they just weren't that much of an improvement, and next time I do one of these I won't use anything but the Eduard seat belts.  The PE parts from the CMK set were the instrument panel and the rear view mirror, and the resin part is the detail that fits inside the back of the canopy.

I had a Cutting Edge decal set and used a few decals from it but it was mostly used a reference for the markings which were mostly painted, except for the stars and bars.

John 3:16- I have no idea what the Korean inscription means. I have a Korean to English translator on my phone but it keeps telling me it's unable to translate it. I do have a Korean/American dentist and I know a waitress at a Korean restaurant. I'm going to try to ask them if either of them can translate it for me.

Thanks John: I can't get their acrylic yellow to cover a thing. I might have to try the enamel insignia yellow. I've been using acrylic white so far and it sorta works.

Thanks, Cliff, the base is of course Alclad 101 in this case, then Model Master enamel insignia yellow, then a light coat of MM chrome yellow to get the gloss as the insignia yellow is flat.  If the base wasn't Alclad then I would use flat white, of course.

Jeaton: That looks perfect! May I ask what kind and brand of yellow you're using there? I always have issues with it covering anything. That might be just the thing for yellow leading edges.

And thanks guys. The cockpit should be good enough considering how little you can see of it. John 3:16- I have no idea what the Korean inscription means. Gamera: You’ve been off to the races, too! Does anything say what the Korean writing in your marking scheme means? :)

I think I'm done painting now.  Time for decals once the yellow gets hard enough.  I put on an undercoat of insignia yellow which is flat and dries rapidly, then followed that with chrome yellow for a gloss finish.  Ended up with a nice dense shiny yellow without building up too much thickness.  I used gloss black for the buzz numbers, think flat might have been better now.

The Air Force didn't do us modelers any favors when they went to all black interiors, did they.  SometiMes it seems like we might as well just paint the inside of the canopy black and be done with it!

Coming along nice, Cliff.
