Indeed it does and being layed off, I have to take what work I can get.  But I'm not done yet.  I will find something else to build.

Sorry guys.  I have to pull the plug on the UH-1.  I got called into work to deal with an issue.  20 hours later, I'm finally home but won't be finished by midnight.  I'll find something else and hopefully start this weekend.

Keep building guys!

Going to hit the sack. Here is my progress so far:

The hardest part has been the bosses:

I found the trick is to use a toothpick with a blob of wax on the end to hold and place them.

There is some good nose art, you can see the mosquito dive bomber on this side. And a mosquito drinking a beer on the other

Nice build of an old kit, Lostagain, I like the nose art and the other markings really look good on the silver.  The Mossie is one of my favourite aeroplanes, but I've only ever built camouflaged ones - not even a night fighter - you may have planted a seed!

Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, you know?

be sure to share the pics with us. She'll still make the front page.

Thanks, Lewbud - I'll take a leaf out of your book & stick with it, and post the pics as soon as she's finished, better late than neverBig Smile.  Thanks again for the GB and good luck with the Mustang & Corsair.

Sailing Dutchman,

Welcome to the asylum!  We look forward to your build! Just one question, what scale is it?

Mongoose,

Congrats on getting the T-50 done!  She looks great!

Hutch,

Bummer about not getting the Hawk finished in time.  You'll get her fixed up in no time and be sure to share the pics with us. She'll still make the front page.

The front page is updated.  I had planned to start the Jet Provost tomorrow, but I'm going to try something new and that is actually finishing a model instead of pushing it off to the side since I didn't finish it by the deadline.  I hope to get the Mustang and Corsair finished by the time I go back to work on Thursday.

Mongoose,. Great scheme, really like that one! And the metallics have come up a treat too - great technique.

Hutch - yep you did get close - still time for another shot!

Thanks Razor.

Now that I've had dinner I feel much better Smile Burger

Here is a whole grouping of finished shots. There are a couple of splinter color schemes. I picked mine because I had the colors :-) I used white Mr Surfacer 1000 sa a primer and saved a step in painting. That's the only way i could have finished without staying up for 24 straight. The 2 grays are Tamiya rattle can decanted and mixed with some Mr Color Leveling Thinner.

Here's a close up showing some of the color modulation i got. Using white as the base seems to make this possible. I went around the edges of some panel lines to make them darker vs the center as well.

the little radiation decals near the nose wew the only ones to give me trouble. They broke up and i had to do a little dot of red to make them look right, but only from a distance :-)

the cockpit is modelmaster Russian blue green and then the rest is vallejo paints and kit decals. Not bad overall. I have had horrible experiences with canopies. This one came out better than any in my past. Not great but clear so I'm happy. I see the frame needs a touch up now haha i tried liquid mask for the rear "skylights" in the canopy. Maybe i should have tried to cut out some tape. Ugggh.

and just because i painted them here are the fans lol

And last here's the engines. To get the hot metal i did satin black primer followed by chantilly brown metallic of all things. On the fuselage i mixed 2 vallejo metal colors Pale Burnt Metal and some Duraluminu with model color  Copper. Add some thinner and away we go. Colored metal is Tamiya clear red/blue/green thinned 75%. I'm getting better at these. Secret sems to be lots of thinning. A little overzealous with the blue maybe. Then in the end a mist of grimey black to blend it all.

lewbud how about using that last one showing the engines for the front page. I love this group build, thanks for hosting! There's nothing better then the feeling of moving one from the box to the display shelf.

That looks fantastic Mongoose!! I love the camo pattern.  Congrats on the finish.

Hutch, it was coming along nicely.  I'm sure you will get the paint sorted.

Lost, great looking mossie.  I would still be tempted to stick the tail in boiling water and give it a twist but regardless it looks great.

Caveman you are an animal!  Build number 3 already.  Your 113 and Camaro looks great!

To everyone else that I've missed congrats on finishing and I've enjoyed your builds.

I hope to start on a second build later this week or next weekend.  I'm looking at a 1/72 Dragon Stug III

more pics later. Time to visit the family!

Well, I think it's a case of "there's always next year..."

I got fairly close:

I don't like the paint job at all - it seemed smooth enough when it went on, but dried grainy.  It's a new bottle of Tamiya X-1, I thinned it as normal, sprayed a couple of light coats onto the plastic as a base.  I then increased the paint flow, gently put some more solid colour down, then moved the brush in close to get a wet layer on top.  Looked OK until it started drying.  Bugger!  When it's properly cured I might be able to rescue it with a LOT of polishing - we'll see.

However, even if the paint had worked out well. I still wasn't going to beat the clock - I usually take ages over a build, so suddenly breaking into a gallop was a bit of a shock to my systemSmile.

The main thing is it was fun - thanks for hosting this, Lewbud, I had a blast, and I can now relax and cheer from the sidelines - good luck, everybody!

Front page is updated with lost's and caveman's builds.

Hutch,

Don't know what stage your in now, but you can do it!  I got faith!

Mongoose,

The T-50 is looking good.  Can't wait to see her in camo.

Tim,

You wildman!  Looking forward to your build!  I've always kind of liked that kit.  Never built it, but always thought it looked cool.

[quote user="lostagain"]yep definitely looking like a hawk. Is that one of the new Airfix moulds - big gaps if it is.

Yes, it's a new Airfix one, I was surprised at the gaps at the wing roots.  Having read reviews of the kit I was aware of possible fit problems with the intakes and the airbrake (if fitted closed), but the wing problem was unexpected.  never mind, a bit of putty sorted it outSmile

Lewbud, I'm at the filling & sanding stage at the moment, also masking the canopy.  I think I'll have to skip the primer stage & go straight to paint if I'm to stand a chance of getting it done in time (5 hrs 25 mins to go!) - wish me luck!

Caveman - ANOTHER build?? - you're a machine!  Go to it, mate!

And on to round 3.  Prepped to start at midnight tonite.  I know this kit is universally hated which may explain why it's been in the stash for so long, but we will see what I can do with it.  Wish me luck!

Congratulations on getting her across the finish line Lost (not to mention keeping SWMBO happy)!  Do you  have a preference for your front page pic?

Hutch,

Your Hawk is looking good!  I think I tried to do one for an earlier iteration of the Weekend GB and didn't fare so well (failure to read the instructions, fortunately I had a spare kit available, just not enough time.  I should finish it someday).

Mongoose,

The T-50 is coming along nicely!  Looking forward to more!

Nice work Hutch, coming together well - yep definitely looking like a hawk. Is that one of the new Airfix moulds - big gaps if it is.

Mongose, looks like a bit of fiddling about there, but coming together nicely

After a couple of hours this morning (41 hours), the decals were all on, the wheels, props and canopy installed. There is some good nose art, you can see the mosquito dive bomber on this side.

And a mosquito drinking a beer on the other

Off for a walk with the family to get a Sunday morning coffee while the wheels set solid. Getting back, added the gear doors and the aerial and we are done!

For the age - we're the same age - seems to go together pretty well. The warping was not fully resolved, the fuselage bends and twists (the model not me, oh no wait both of us) - must be from Queensland*

And from above:

*Queenslander = 'banana bender'

But still happy with how it has come out

And keeping with the tradition of displaying a libation with the finished model. Well, the sun isnt over the yardarm yet, but not wanting to be accused of being a piker here it is:

Thanks Lewbud for the group build, loook forward to this each year - getting a kit out in 2 days is such a good feeling when I only manage four in a year (including this one!).

Some great build this year, the quality ratchets up each year! Keep at it Hutch and Mongoose.

And with a few hours to spare, keep the better half happy and so off to lunch.

“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.”

Hutch that's gonna be a nice display when you're done.

Thanks, Mongoose, I just hope I can finish it in time...

I like the look of your build - I've not seen the Su 50 before, very impressive, looking good.

Hutch that's gonna be a nice display when you're done.

I'm taking a break for dinner...even tho I shouldn't since i took a break to take daughter to hair appt, and a break to help son out, and a break to ahh wth life happens right. Just gotta get back to it Smile Burger in reality the break is good as I really need to let things dry and not rush at this stage. Tons of mr surfacer in the intakes to smooth them out. They may dry by next week lol cockpit is installed, interior color paint on the exterior to start it off, engine internals done, and 1 big giant crater on top of the fuselage filled.

if i can get the fuselage closed up tonight the deadline should be doable.

I've not been looking in while I've been working, so there's a lot of good stuff going on unknown to me - Caveman's M113 looks like you could get in & drive it away!  Lostagain, that Mossie's looking good, too.  Many more praiseworthy projects happening!

I'm running well behind time with this one, due to underestimating how time-consuming simple jobs are.  I never realised how much time is spent just cleaning up mould seams - and, while there's very little actual flash on this kit, it still soaks up the minutes!

So - cockpit painted, fuselage halves joined, experimental wing system fitted...

The pegs/clamps were to hold in place the coaming that makes up the spine just aft of the cockpit.

Actual wings & stuff fitted -

Note the fairly significant - and unexpected - gap at the wing roots.

Perfect plastic putty to the rescue - sorted.

Seats installed, rear IP cover & gun sights fitted - looking like a Hawk.

The engine intakes also needed some help from PPP, but this stuff is easy (and quick!) to use.

I'd hoped to have the model primed by lunchtime today, and painted by tonight, leaving tomorrow for final assembly, decals, and finish.  Still, we'll see what can be done - never say die!

Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, you know?
