Sorry about your troubles, Gary.  Sounds like a rough go.  Hope you feel better real soon.

GAF

Colors look good for both, but I'm no expert.  As long as the colors look right.

My own project has certainly come to a screeching halt.  Since October 1st I've been in and out of the hospital.  I suffered two heart attacks and have had four stints installed in my coronary artery.  The first two were blocked by a clot, so they had to install two more.  Just got home and am ready for some rest (you can't rest in the hospital).  At the moment, modeling is pretty far down the list of things to accomplish, but I hope to finish before the end of the year.  I realize now that it's a good thing I canceled the planned "X-Files GB".  I don't think I could handle it now.

Meanwhile, we'll see how it goes!

Gary

Sounds like you need that rest Gary, i know you will have the thoughts and best wishes of everyone here.

Gary, yes do take care.  Our hobby is just that, just something to do and enjoy, while not be concerned with due dates.

--------------------------

Bakelite is just one method of creating synthetic plastics, and according to the late Edgar Brooks and his research, is not really the go to term for this particular case.  It was a mix of resin/paper, made by Aeroplastics, a Glasgow-based company.  Testing began in 1938, but cracking and breakage delayed introduction until  14-5-40.

It doesn't appear to have been intended as a whole sale replacement of the metal seat, but rather as  stated under mod 189 "To introduce plastic seat as alternative design to assist production and provide alternative manufacture".  Also quoted from Edgar, "... their use extended beyond the end of the war, since there's an order demanding that they be rescued for future use; Hornets, Vampires and Meteors used plastic seats,...".

So Cliff, I think you are ok going with the metal seat.

regards,

Jack

Thank you, gentlemen, for your understanding and offers of support.  Today I'm feeling better.  I managed to finish up what was left on the "ATSNBN" which was minor.  Big Smile  No pictures, but what I have left is to paint the base and I hope she will be ready.

Again, my thanks.

Bish - I am going to scratch my plans for the Nelson, I cannot find the kit in my stash at the moment even though I know it is in the kit storage closet somewhere.  I will instead build Dragon's 1/700 HMS Invincible instead if that is alright with you.  That kit is currently at hand and still sealed.

Gary: It's a relief to hear you're feeling better. My prayers you continue to improve.

Jack: Thanks! As I said I'm not going to rip the darn thing apart to repaint the bloody seat.

Harold: I too admire your dedication to getting things right. I tend to go with 'good enough'...

Hello Harold, to me most of your colours are well within an acceptable range.  As for your individual concerns:

1.  - topside Dark Green paint is less than 2% darker than the Illiad swatch.  Your paint does have a bit more blue in it, and that is what is likely making it less than a perfect match.   You could try adding about 10% of the Dark Earth to shift it?

2. - interior colour looks fine to me.

3. - russet coloured seat also looks fine.  These were plastic seats introduced  around mid 1940.  Very likely contracted out to independedent manufacturer(s), so it would be understandable for some colour variance from batch to batch.

Jack and Bish, I made some adjustment to the Russet colour, but I think my original choice of #71.080 looks closer to the picture Jack posted of a Spitfire seat. I also added some Dark Earth brown to the Dark Green mix to shift it a bit and now it looks spot on to me.

Harold, your Dk Green mix looks right on the money.

Agree about your results with the Russet colour.  If you really want to match the photo example, looks like it would need a little red added.

Jack I will try a little red with the rust to see what happens while I'm waiting for the primer to dry on the model.

I am ready to primer the model and start painting. I recall we had a discussion about which colour to paint first in a camouflage pattern. I believe you, Cliff and Bish agreed the lightest color is first, then mask off the camouflaged pattern and add the dark color... Is that correct?

Also I believe someone told me to build up lite layers of dark camouflaged paint, so I don't create paint ridges?

That's correct, lighter colour first as it requires less coverage when applying the darker paint.

Look forward to seeing that paint go on Harold. And yep, that is the general rule, lighter colour first. As with any rule, there are some exceptions, but this ain't one of them.

Yeah, I guess you could go dark and then light- it's just easier to cover light colours with dark than the other way around.

Got a start on my Spitfire. I decided to try something different and make this in flight but as a Christmas ornamentSmile First up was painting the inside of the canopy a dark grey and then I drilled a hole for the hook. The hook is a bent up piece of copper wire I had sitting around, which I cemented into place with some epoxy putty...I didn't want that sucker coming outStick out tongue

Started work on the camo so should have pics soon. Keep up the great work everyone!

Wooah Gary, that's a big one!

I had mine 13 years ago now. It got me back into the hobby - of the therapists said I needed to work on hand eye coordination and fine motor skills.

Thanks Gamera! Was able to get the camo work done. I used AK dark earth with a little white added and Tamiya RAF dark green...

The everything got a coat of Ammo one shot clear primer in prep for decals...

The construction of the Invincible has begun in earnest.   There doesn't seem to be much to it after breezing through the directions, but we shall see if there are any bumps along the way.

First speed bump, the hull has some minor warping but nothing too bad.  Just needs some filler and sanding.

Thanks, Bish.

While attempting to affix the flight deck, the warp in hull halves led to a definite fit issue, but this was remedied with a couple cut sprue braces.  The deck was a near perfect fit afterwards.

I hit the open area at the stern with a quick coat of dark gray due to the open spaces in the hull, no pics of that.  Just some more minor filling and sanding needed, but most of the deck bits are attached.

The superstructure is also more or less assembled.  Just the PE radar and radio antennae remains.
