The movie 'Grand Prix' is airing this morning (Monday) on Movies! at 9:25 EDT.

I had it on during another airing the other day while I worked on my Lotus, which was fun. Looked it up, and reportedly, actual Formula I cars of the day were used for filming.

I'm recording the one this AM so I can watch it in earnest one day.

Keep at it Greg!

I'll be here on the forum so no worries there.  But I just packed up all my stuff and said goodbye to all my paints, tools, kits etc.  I will have my computer and will continue to be engaged with this group build which is near and dear to my heart but I appreciate the group stepping up to get more pics and builds and keep moving the group build forward.

Thanks, and good to know you'll be able to stay in touch, John. I wasn't quite sure.

Something for you to look forward to; I don't remember much about packing up my stuff on the last move, but in my case it was a couple years+ until I unpacked it, and it was like Christmas. So fun.

Greg, on my machine they appear bigger but on a postimage page.  It has only the one image and does not link to any others.

Thank you, John....that's just what I was hoping to hear.

Much appreciated! Toast

GMorrison
While our GB leader is engaged in his move, let's keep on with the build. I will post an update on my build tomorrow, and for every reply with progress from the rest of you I will post one of my own.

Good idea and I like your challenge. I was also thinking about how to pitch in and help keep this thread going and give John a hand while he is busy with the relocation/move/build. You've figured it out for me, Bill.

Started exploring my Lotus with the intention of an OOB build using existing paints and materials. Having never built a 1/20 scale Tamiya formula car, had no idea what to expect.

Here is a partial of the aluminum monocloque chassis, dry-fitted and partially painted.

Due to the kit detailing and fit (unexpected), by OOB plan sort of blew up when I ordered the Tamiya PE set, Indy Cal decals (my first), and Zero Paints British Racing Green paint. Sigh. Confused

Being away from the bench for 18 mos, and experimenting with paints other than my usual Vallejo (trying more MRP and Vallejo), I've done quite of bit of stripping and re-doing already.

The two top pieces are now MRP silver over gloss black. The Tamiya "painted plastic look" appears more like real sheet aluminum, but the covers look cool. Big Smile

Could somebody do me a favor and let me know if clicking the images above lead to anything except a slightly larger image? (and hopefully not into my postimage account???)

Can't seem to post directly from Google Photos anymore, reinventing the wheel yet again......

John,

If this qualifies for the GB, it's on my shelf and I think I'd like to give it a go. If not, I'll find something else.

Thanks.

And John takes the checkered flag!  Well done, and of a subject with historical significance.  I never realized the engine was transversely mounted - I never would have guessed.

Ben, OMG I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery!

Damn brother from the frying pan to the fire.  How did that happen?  I have crazy aches and pains that come out of nowhere.. getting old I suppose but nothing like that.  Best wishes my friend.

Thanks,

John

Those sound like some nice bild coming up John. I'll look forward to seeing them.

As for me, still not much progress towards modeling anything. After 10 weeks I am finally able to have the hand/wrist splint off unless doing something serious with weight. Had my first physical therapy visit and was given additional home exercises to complete daily between the weekly PT. Currently I find my right hand very weak and unsteady compared to my left and the range of motion is also greatly restricted. I've also noticed that the two tendon tears and pin hole tear in one regiment takes more time to heal than a sprain or tendonitis, go figure.  :ooops:

And now to drop the next bomb on the situation; I broke both feet.  :eeek:

A stress fracture on the fifth metatarsal (outside long bone behind the little toe) on my right foot, and a compound fracture of the same bone on my left foot. The left foot is much worse off than the right, but at least I will heal without surgery with pins and screws... eventually.  :wtf:

One thing I can tell you is that this combination has taken a big toll on my spring and early summer motorcycle riding this year. To say I cannot wait to be back to 100% is an understatement.

I hope this message finds everyone in a much better situation than mine. It's really not that bad now as I can see the finish line after nine weeks of stagnation. Take care everyone, will write more on my F1 Auto Union build when relevant.  :th:

Ben, I have an Airfix Victor K.2, a Monogram B-24D (both for Bish's GB's here) and a Koster/Monogram XP-72 on the bench now so it won't be real soon that I get to another 4 wheeler.  Thanks for the nice comment.

Sorry about my late response, but that looks like it was a fun build that came out looking really nice, good job John.

So, since you got it done rather quickly, are you going to build another F1 car?

You've built a Tamiya, perhaps you should check out a Fujimi, Ebbro, or perhaps go up to a 1/12 Tamiya F1 car?

Very nice build on the Honda John-great example of an early 60's era F1.  Well done indeed.

Well done, John. Yes

That has always been my second favorite of the Tamiya Forumula One kits over the years, even though I know nothing about racing or race cars. It's good to see it built up.

Got you on the front page John, but I see the same issue of the image not loading.  It's there when you click on it though.  I'll pull it down and  put it up on IMGUR and see if that works.  Bingo.

Thanks,

John

I replaced all the RA272 photos with new ones with the mirrors, but the images in the post are not updating.  You can see the corrected images if you click on the ones in the post.

Thanks, Paul and John.  It's quite a contrast with the last two cars I've built, the Tamiya 42 Ford and the  Pyro 1931 Cadillac Sport Phaeton.

Pick whatever picture you like for the front page, John.

Looks great John - let me know which pic you want on the front page if your finished.  Love that car.

Thanks,

John

That template worked great Paul, nice looking tire!

My RA 272 is at the finish line.  I was nervous about all the spider web suspension and engine framing, but Tamiya did a great job and it went together very well.  The outer body fit very tightly but by holding my mouth right it went together fine.  When I unmislocate the mirrors I will install them, but I do think the car looks sleeker without the eyestalks.

The eyestalks have been located and installed.  All the photos have been updated.  Hooray!

Boo!  You have to click on the images to see the new ones, the post won't update the embedded images.  That's not right!

A shop called Hiroboy. Don't remember what it cost or if it's still in stock.  I think this will be my method for 1/20 Goodyear tires for now on.  Sometimes I have trouble getting the decals on straight.
Leclerc killed it this morning in qualifying.  Go Ferrari.  Enjoy the Monaco tomorow.  The cars have long ago out grew the track but I still like the race.

Went with a template instead of the Tamiya reverse decals.  It left a bit of overspray but I think it works for tire lettering.

Thanks,
