Bamboozled by the Box Art GB 2023
Posted by cbaltrin on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 7:21 AM

Ok Gents,  I've been wanting to do this GB for a long time.  This GB is about those kits that we just had to have as soon as we saw the box. The plastic inside might have been the biggest styrene turd on the planet (or not), but we told ourselves it was all good if it came in a box that cool!

NOTE: Some manufacturers would not have box art, but a photo of the completed model on the box top. These are ok as well as long as it is what made you want to buy the kit!

Of course, you can build a modern kit if you like, as long as you got it for the box art! However,  my main hope for this GB is that you aquire a kit from the past (likely with raised panel lines and / or rivets) , and for the love of the box art and the hobby, turn it into the best it can be.  Try not to go Steven Austin on the kit -- use as much of the original plastic and you can and be true to what came in the box. I know there will be exceptions, AMS will set in, but try ....

Post a picture of your kit box art (to be displayed next to your name on the roster!)

Optionally,  Please tell use what you love obout your kits box art. Why you just had to have it.

The GB will run from 10/15/2022 to 12/14/2023.  Kits shold be unstarted, but slightly started is OK.

And for some inspiration...

I just wrapped one up for this exact reason. I'm sure I have something else in my stash that screams box art. Put me down for unknown.

I have too many failed GBs to try to enter this one, but the theme made me think back to my younger days, when I first laid eyes on Monogram's 1/48 P-61 Black Widow.  Yeah it was the age of "photo of built up kit on the box", but I really liked it and the side panel photos, and it DID move me to a purchase.  $6.75 was steep for a middle school kid, but I had no regrets.  The Shep Paine diorama sheet was like gilding the lilly.  Ha, ha, but today you would have a hard time convincing me to get another one!  Same thing for Revell's classic 1/72 B-17 Memphis Belle, but that one had the cool painting for box art.

Okay now that I have interrupted the classrom, I will look into the stash to see if I can play.  But no promises!  Stick out tongue

Nice idea. Many of the kits I bought were inspired by the box art, mainly from "our latest acquvisition" thread. I am in  this one, just don't know with what yet as I tend to keep the stash small.

Understandable Real G.  I almost did not post this GB...  I thought to myself,  I have too many started builds to run a group build... but, based on that logic, I would never be able to run a group build! Cool So I just jumped in .  I'll add you to the Roster just in case ...

Great theme-please sign me up-TBD for now.

Are cross overs allowed?  I'm good if not-but always looking for the opportunity to kill to birds with one stone.

Thanks

Hey bobbaily, Sure cross-overs are allowed as long as the kit is not to far along in construction.

I've been MIA for the past few months but I think I may be able to get my bench set up, running and in production at least by next Oct. So count me in for something. I have lot of stuff that was bought for it's box art.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Hey cbaltrin, love the concept, I am in!

A few to choose from in the stash, old and new, but going with the vibe of the GB I will pick one of the older ones.

I'm in!  I bought this one specifically for the box cover.

Some of the newer kits have some nice artwork as well.

Nice Box Art 68GT. You're on the roster.   I was actually toying with the idea of doing the hasegawa/minicraft F-4E. It has some really cool artwork on the box as well.

I'd like to join with a Revell Germany 1:72 F-16C in Tigermeet livery. I saw the box art and just had to buy it. Why? I really like these non-standard schemes.

I was thinking the same thing but remembered I bought this one just because it had box art that I've never seen before.

Here is a good one IMO. Might enter this one in fact.. still debating.  Just love this box art. The pilot climbing into the cockpit and other pilots running to their planes.. Look at all the detail on the pilot and the aircraft as well. Makes me really want to buy this and build it.  Would not have touched this kit in 100 years if the box just showed a photo of the finished model.

I believe I have a qualifier here. I have never built in this scale and I am guessing this kit is not great... that being said check out the box art! It comes with a pin up poster and my choice of nose art lol. It was also like $10 so I just couldn't refuse.

I would like to join in with this 1/64 scale B-17

On folks, This GB is officially open!

I have decided on my first entry. It's the Fujimi 1/72 F4U-5N!  I have always loved the look of the -5N from back when I first saw one on the cover of FSM (1/32 converted from Revell -1 kit).  I think the box art captures the look of the variant well and the 2nd F4U passing  under the nose of the main subject is a nice touch, showing off the gull wing of the F4U well.

Opening the box I can aleady see visible mold release agent on the wings, so the first step will be into the dawn dish soap bath!  It also has posible airlerons with look pretty good compared to the dreaded Airfix posable control surfaces. This makes me was to cut out the rudder as well and pose it off one side as well.  I will have to replace the wheels however with some resine ones. Other than that, and possibly new guns,  I hope to keep it OOB.
