Bamboozled by the Box Art GB 2023

Calling this one finished now.  It was a fun little kit, but had some minor fit issues and the missing decals bummed me out.  Someday when I build another 1/72 armor kit with a DAK option I will swipe the palm trees from it.

Yeah, they'd probably be mighty tiny.  Maybe an 1/8" tall, it that.  They probably wouldn't add much, but it's the principle of it...  

And that is why I have 15 kits in varying stages of completion in the storage bins of doom.

Although it is a pretty new kit, I was indeed "bamboozled by the box art".  I have always liked the Buccaneer, but primarily the RAF incarnation with the bulged belly and wraparound camouflage.  The new 1/48 Airfix Bucc kit is pricey too, but after seeing the lovely box art, I pushed the "buy this" button.  And I must say I have no regrets.  Compared to the old nightmare 1980s kit, it just oozes quality.

Work has begun on the Peacemaker.  She's a bigg'un.  Wings look like a boomerang

Plenty of weight in the nose.  Luckily the nose gear on this kit is quite stout.  Sometimes 1/144 gear is very spindly.

And now about 6 hours of filling and sanding

I estimate 3 hours assembly.  6 hours filling/sanding.  5 hours masking the greenhouse.  5 hours remasking the greenhouse after I'm not happy with it.

She's gonna be fun to paint though!

Looking good GreySnake.  I have never attempted armor, but always wondered how the muddy, rusty texture were achieved.  That should look good when painted.  

One thing about armor is it's not perfect, so our work to replicate it is kinda easy. Your efforts look great.

Hi Cbaltrin, I have made my selection from the stash. I picked this up in a second hand model shop and had to have it, even though I don't usually do cars.

Hey lostagain, Cool Car!  Roster updated.

Neato Lola, Lostagain!  I look forward to seeing the kit built up.  Is it motorized or a static kit?

I worked a bit on the Buccaneer, and am happy to say fit of the main components is very good.  There are a bunch of separate "black boxes" which make for a busy looking cockpit, so I don't think any aftermarket will be needed .

The crew look like they were scaled up from a 1970s Matchbox kit, so they will be either be replaced or just omitted.

Real G there is some nice detail in that cockpit.

Sounds like you know where the Lola comes from - it is very much set up for motorisation. I think they chose the 1/18 scale so they could get a motor in the engine?!? I have glued the battery covers down and will fill the huge gaps with Milliput before smoothing it all out.

Yeah.  Don't think I would touch it.  May see if I can source some decals for Penrod and Sam and put together a more current kit for old times sake :)

Quick update on the B-36.  Much filling and sanding has taken place.  The main structure is assembled.  Starting to look the part.

Next up is the reason that I have been putting this kit off.  I counted 78 tiny little frames that need masked.  

Oh wow that's crazy. Even foiling it would mean making tiny curved foil strips.

They could almost play chess on the canopy...

Getting into the Lola - lots of cutting out, and doing some sub assembly. Under the chassis, the battery covers are glued shut and several layers of milliput were needed to smooth it over a bit. I didn't touch the Tamiya 1970 name plate though!

The next was stripping off the chrome, dumped it into some bleach and gave it a quick rinse and scrub. The thick clear varnish base for the chrome was untouched by the bleach.

Try soaking the chomed sprues in Purple Power overnight.  It will help loosen the clear undercoat.

I had not heard of that - I will have a look for Purple Power, not sure if it's available in Australia. I'm sure I can work out a local equivalent.

No-splash Bleach gel works very well also.

I have read brake cleaner works, but never tried it.  There is also a hobby product called Easy Lift Off that supposedly works.
