SCI-FI - Star Trek group scratchbuild/kitbash (ends 12/1/04).

Hey Andy did you ever get any farther along?

Although the GB is long over(?) I'm still fiddling with my Baton Rouge project. I'm finishing up the molds for the resin casting and thought I'd share a couple pics. These are of the bottom half of the saucer section. Does that look like $25 worth of silicone?

Well, deadline is here & I have to admit that I'm not done. I'm in the middle of painting the azteking when, of course, I ran out of air. Yea, I know, I really need a compresser.

It's those little things that get in the way- I get home from work, hoping to put in a couple hours in the model room...
"I'm home."
"Don't take your shoes off!"
And it just got worse from there...

But never fear, pictures will still be coming! How'd everyoen else do?

I have my own apologies to offer to. Though I'm still enthused with my over all look to my 'Amarillo' class cruiser, it still is in a very raw form and a scratchbuild project has proven very difficult for me to make time for (and joining other GBs didn't help ).

Woody, thanks for starting this GB because it did finally get me started to do a scratchbuild and I will be posting images of it on the FSM Sci-Fi forum.

Awww, dude, don't feel too bad. Unfortunantly, real life does catch up with us every now & then. I'm just at the first masking stage & (as of yet) havn't painted a second color on. Hopefully I can tonight, but a sick & very cute little girl, who just wants Daddy nearby, has all my attention at the moment. I'll be pushing to complete mine by the 1st, myself.

I'm afraid reality has caught up with my project. I have run out of RTV molding material and still have several molds to complete, the saucer section mold being the largest. Today is 11/25 so I've just come to grips with the fact that my project will not be done by 12/1. When you ask? I'm not sure because I promised I wouldn't spend anymore on my hobby stuff until after Christmas. Tis the season to be strapped for cash. My apologies, I feel like I've let you guys down.

Okay, the base coat is on & I'm now masking of sections to paint the second "aztek" color. Not really aztek, IMO, because the panels are so big, but that's what I'm calling it. Teadious, but kinda fun. I never really masked off anything this complex before. A good priming time before I tackle the NX-01 in ten years!

Well, the first coat went on last night. Looks pretty good! I put on a base coat of light grey with a bluish tint. If you look at the pic, it's two-toned. The second tone will be a slightly more to the green side. I'm just going to take the grey-blue stock & add a bit of RLM 65 to it. I may have to sand down a few bumps & repaint, but overall I'm rather pleased with it so far.

Alright, I can't wait to see the pics. I have all the parts for my USS Moscow done. Well almost, I have to make an insert for the impulse drive. That piece and the bussard collector domes will be cast in clear red resin. I'm also trying to decide how the warp nacelle pylons should be in the final kit. I don't want the kit to be too hard for folks to put together or be too fragile. Strickly speaking if I just build the casting masters into a finished kit I could be done with my project by the middle of next week but than means no kits.

No thoughts to the future, but the first coat of paint should go on my kit tonight, pending the rugrat goes to sleep early! Pictures to come...

Not to jump the gun but has anyone else given any thought to the next group build or scratchbuild? Is anyone interested in another?

Very cool to be sure! I love Lyran ship design and I can't wait to see your build.

Lyran Tiger it is, then! I've always liked that design (although I don't care for the socio-political structure of Lyran society) and I have already made really good progress on the ship as it is. It's nominally 1/650 scale and it comes in around 13" long. There simply aren't enough models done of SFB subjects. Uh, so there's only about 5 and bit weeks left then, right.....?!? I better get cracking, then!

I'm very sorry to hear about your kitty. On the subject of your project, a Lyran Tiger sounds very interesting to be sure! As a long time Starfleet Battles fan, I'd love to see you go that way.

After losing my beloved kitty 2 months ago (and it has been 2 months to the day) I have had absolutely no ambition during that time to touch a model except to move it.... However, after locating my long-neglected tools again this last week I think I'm ready to get back at a project for the build. I think one of my possibilities is completely out now leaving only a few options left.. probably my Lyran Tiger.

Anyone have any better plans for the Klingon B-10 battleship than the ones that were published in Captain's Log 6? Those are the ones that made their way to the Starship Schematic Database and they aren't really that accurate to the miniature except in general shape.

Your cruising right along! It looks great and I love the use of found items, namely the camera.

Got some more pics up! Two shots to talk about. First is a shot after the struts were secured:

Heads on, you can see that I used the excitingly average 45 degree angle. Both the struts go through the booms (I cut a groove down the middle) & hold the sensor dish pod, which will have a dish on it. The overall proportions look pretty good, I think. Perhaps the pos is a smidge off.

Second shot is where I'm pretty much at right now. Nacelles are on, & you can see the piece I used from a digital camera for the bridge, lens & all! The tube behind the bridge will be the shuttlebay- I just have to figure out a door! Since this pic, I also have added some spheres to the ends of the booms.
The only thing left to do in this pic (I've done most of the construction) is build the impulse engines. You can see the starting of them inside the booms on the aft of the saucer as small triangles. The surfaces are being constructed with grooved sheet.
Also a point of note is the front grill area on the nacelles that I covered with sheet to be more in design with the image I found.

I've dried out two high-lighter markers ('liberated' from my office at work ) to use as warp nacelles. Triming the edges from the join of the plastic sphere halves for my primary hull has been more difficult than I thought. It's going to take a lot more putty to smooth it out.

Still plugging away! Just took a few new pictures, too- only have to drop them off to get developed. I'm just filling in the cracks with putty & doing the complimentary sanding.
All of the parts are attached, save for the deflector dish & bussards (which I always leave off for ease of painting) & the bussard spikes. (Thought I'd add those "just because" it's early TOS!)
Everything looks pretty good, though the port nacelle dried a bit off kilter, but it's hard to tell unless you scrutenize it closely.
Found a great piece for the "bridge ring"! It really pays to throw everything into your "bits box", as the lens & outer ring from an old digital camera look real good!
Next step is painting, which will be a real process, as I have all three versions of the E plus the 2500 version waiting in the wings to paint. I'll try mixing up a big batch, varying the paint a little for each of the three sets (E's, early NX, 2500).

I just thought I'd touch base and see how everyone is doing.

Thanks! Though I think I made the width of the hull just a smidge too wide, maybe just an 1/8" or so. Still looks pretty good & I'm fairly pleased with how it's coming. Now I just gotta find that bridge ring somewhere!

That is some great progress your making. The form and proportions look very nice indeed. Nice TOS feel and I'm looking forward to your next batch of pics. That reminds me I need to get off my duff and post my last batch of pics.

First up shows the booms that have been attached. I had the bottom of the booms drop over the edge of the saucer just because! The lines on the saucer lay out where all the additions will go. You can also see the tool I used to get the shape of the saucer to create the outside walls for the center, laying at the bottom of the pic.

This pic shows the basic center hull constructed, with just a bit of putty needed. (Not sanded, of course) I cut a notch out of the back for (what I'm guessing) is the shuttlebay, which is created by the larger diameter tube. In this shot, I pulled the shuttlebay tube back a bit so you can see some more detail. It will be cut to the proper size.
