Ok. Been working for about 3 days now. I have one Nascar built about 90% and another one about 40% complete. So far no problems. I feel that my skills are starting to come back to me. Still not comfortable with some of the skills, but still working on them. I will try to post some pics in a day or two. Also I need to be put down for 6 Nascar and one CR-5. Also sorry about the "DOWN UNDER" comment I forgot about the tri-nationals I only lived there for 6 months. So again I am Sorry if I made anyone MAD!!!!!!!Disapprove [V]Ashamed [*^_^*]Dunce [D)]Dunce [D)]Sign - Oops [#oops]

Hey guys,

Murray Kish: 2001 C5-R #63 fr. Lemans

I don't have any pics uploaded to my web space yet, but I'll give you a bit of an update on my C5-R build.

I may be crazy/stupid/foolish, but I've decided to *challenge* myself with this build. There's quite a few little things I don't like about the kit, so I'm gonna take a stab at modifying/detailing it a bit. I've never jumped this deep into the fire before, so there's a good chance I might burn the toast....

But first, reference items. I've done a bit of looking around on the web and some other forums and found some good reference sites that people might be interested in. I hope the site/photo owners don't object to me posting links to a few of them:

http://www.7extrememotorsports.com/lemans/photos/corvette_c5r.htm

http://www.johnnyoconnell.com/2001.html
http://www.scaleautosport.com/porschetn.asp?racemodel=Corvette%20C5-R

Hopefully some of the other guys building C5-R's in this group will find something useful there. Note that lots of the sites/pictures are from various races and venues over the last several years. Not all of the pics are specifically of the car I'm building, but hopefully they'll give me a pretty good idea of what's what. If anyone has any other references they'd be willing to share, please add them to the list.

I'm not at my house/bench now, so I don't have my full list of things I'm planning to do, but here's a list from memory:

1. Open the hood - there's engine detail in the kit, so why not make it visible. I considered opening the rear as well, but much of the detail is visible through the rear window, so I decided not to bite off more than I could chew...
2. Lower the ride height - I did a pre-build up and I think it just sits too high - primarily in the front.
3. Various panel lines need to be filled.
4. Personally, I think the vents behind the front wheels on the sides of the car need to be bigger. So, I'm opening them up a bit. I actually think the the race car is quite a bit wider in the front than what is represented in the kit (there's some really good reference pics at http://palmeter.com/C5RWiderby3.htm). I considered widening the front fenders and then decided against it (just too much for one kit...) Opening the vents up will accomplish what I'm looking for.
5. The vents on the hood will be opened up (they're molded in the kit) and scratch louvers will be installed. Hopefully this will turn out half-a&& realistic and not ruin the whole thing...
6. Various other vents (primarily in the front air dam) will be opened up
7. I don't like the way the side window frames are molded in the kit (to my eyes, they look like armour plating (with a bunch of big rivets) rather than what would be on a race-car). They'll be shaved down and re-done.
8. Some level of wiring/plumbing detail will be added to the chassis/engine/interior. Just how far I'll go (or attempt to go) is not yet determined. We'll see how the body modifications go before I determine this.

I've already started on a few of these, and so far things aren't going too bad. I'll put a later post together with some pictures and other progress comments.

Good luck, everyone!!

Murray

Ok, so I'm on a roll here...ehhr well, painted chassis yesterday (not the engine belly) and it went on real nice. Haven't got reference pictures for the underside of the actual car so I followed instructions for the box kit. Red on the underside and silver on top.
Problems started when I went to prime the body shell. Opened a new can and started spraying, but there was something wrong with the nozzle. I think the hole was to narrow and the preassure was to low. Ended up with some sort of flat orange peal....very strange. Changed the nozzle and resprayed. Will have to look tonight how it went. Perhaps I will have to sand it down a bit and do a third layer.

hey joelwideqvist, you missed my Lancia from your list of rally car builds! Only the last RWD car to dominate the WRC. Tongue [:P]

Progress has been slow because we got some 1:4 scale Felis Catus recently. I was particularly impressed with my airbrush work on the tabby Big Smile [:D]

As for the Lancia037, the cockpit tub is shaping up. Conpared with the real thing the pedals are closer to the driver. I'm using figures and for the driver to touch the pedals in their proper position, he'd need to be about 8' tall. A small compromise, but it will look better if his feet are on the pedals.

Here's the real thing, and one of my source pics. Don't expect the finished product to look anything like this Dead [xx(]

Oops, to fast on the delete button there. Sorry for that U-96. I think you did the right thing to move the pedals. Would look terrible otherwise. For me I had a new experience today when I assembled my rollcage during lunch hour Big Smile [:D] Have to speed up to keep up with your speed. Had to do some scratching cause [insert explanation of your choice] broke a piece of the cage off when cleaning it up. I took the irritating plates off that Tamiya keeps including even though they dissapeared from the real car in 2000. Cut them out with a heated X-acto and sanded the tubes of the cage to round them off. Don't look too bad and between you and me you're not going to see jack ****** of them when installed. Will make nice in-progress pics though Wink [;)]

Alright! Done with the first of 7 Builds. I just got on photobucket to try to post some pics, but I have not been able to at this time. If I could get some help with this I will post some pics so that everyone in this GB can tell me if I am doing good for not modeling for so long or if I am wasting my time and money. But as I said I am done with the first one so Luke if you would update the first page. Now I should be done with number 2 build but Sunday.Big Smile [:D]Cowboy [C):-)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Phjuuii! There's some fast build going on here in the GB! I've hardly left the starting grid and having trouble gaining speed Wink [;)] Been busy finishing another one of my projects (Pennzoil Skyline from big T) But I'm going on vacation soon(4 weeks) and after that I'll be home with my youngest (6 months old) son for another 4 weeks to begin with. Hopefully he will sleep a lot during daytime so daddy gets some time in the workshop Big Smile [:D]. Anyway, I'm a slow builder as I tend to build a little on several object at the same time, anyone recognize this behaviour? I wish I could stay with one project 'til it's finished before I move on to another one. On my GB-project bad luck struck as I metioned earlier, the funny thing is that with a non metalic color it would not be such a problem to sand and polish the blemishes away. But now I'm stuck with this marks in the paint job so I'll be sanding it down a bit harder and give it another go as soon as I got a new bottle of paint. Hopefully this weekend.

Have a good summer!

R-CMan73 - I'll wont update the main nomination list until you tell me what model (eg name, race competition it's in, manufacturer, etc) you've done. I'm not being mean or rude or bossy, but it would just help others to see what car you've actually done Shy [8)]. Who knows, someone else down the track may pick the same model and ask you for some tips Wink [;)]. You can tell us prior to posting the pics!

Secondly, with posting pics - Now you said you use photobucket? Cos if you do, it is very simple using photobucket to post pics. Simply, to post pics within the text, just copy & past the URL address of the picture. At photobucket, it's the Img address - just copy it as it reads enitrely and paste it into the text!

your picture should read (in words) like this (but with the spaces removed)
[ IMG ] http://XXXX.photobucket.com/albums/XXX/XXX/MyPicturesNameHere.jpg[ /IMG ]

remember, remove the spaces from the entire command (I left mine there so you can read it, and a little red cross doesn't come up)

good luck

ok - I forgot about the GB Badge until you mentioned it Big Smile [:D], and seeing a couple of us have finished, we need to get cracking . . .

For those who dont know (and some people dont), a Group Build Badge is a little picture that you can display in your profile or signature that associates you with that group build. The pic is a symbolic representation that sums up the Group Build. You can look at heaps of peoples signatures or you can check my profile @ FSM for examples. Anyway, the Badge is nominated and designed and voted for, by all of us - including people at ScaleAuto.. I have designed one below as my nomination. If you dont like it, you can choose another design, and if you cant design it, I'm pretty good with graphics and can surely help.

Once voted for, you can only use it once you've finished your car (or your first car if you're building more than one). To make it easier for everyone, cos the guys at ScaleAuto will be helping out aswell, I suggest 1 to 2 months of nominations, and after that time, we vote for the one. What do you guys think Question [?]

**Like with everything that I'm doing, I will place each GB Badge Nomination in Post 1, Page 1, next to the GB Model Nominations, Lists & Rules. This will make it easier for all to view them as time goes by, and then vote for one!

Remember, let's get creative and vote for one at the end.

Since we're in the same CBP together (I'm from Scale Auto) I thought I would post here as well.

My build is all finished..... The John Greenwood Stars-n-Stripes Corvette as raced in the 1971 Sebring, according to the box art. It doesn't look exactly like the pictures of the real car but the real car never really looked the same in all the pictures either. So for me, I think it looks good and makes a good shelf model. Accurate or not?? who knows? I like the look of the car either way.

It came out okay, built right from the box with a few adjustments. The only part I had to make for the kit was the front spoiler. All the pictures I could find of the real car had one so I made one for this kit. Otherwise, it's a fun car to build and the decals aren't all that difficult, just take your time with them...

So here it is... (and a few other pictures of it in my photo album on the last page if you're interested)

Now to something I need help with. Can't decide how to go ahead with one step in the process of detailing the body.
Take a look at this picture:

On the gravel legs the Peugeot has a gravel shield mounted on the sides of the car, you can spot it as the black area on the lower right side. I found this idea on a web site and this is how I'm going to replicate it.

My problem is, like I mentioned above that the shield is going to be black. My question now is in wich order I should mount and paint the shield. I see two ways

1. Mount the shield before painting the body red. This way it's more likely to get it right and fix it if something goes wrong. My thaught is that it could me troublesome to paint the black area properly, seems to be hard to paint the upper edge of the shield when you've masked off the red. The plasticard strip isn't thick...
2. Paint the body red and THEN add the shield. That way I can get some paint on the gravel shield edge before I mount it. But this leaves some big flaws as I can ruin the red paint job when attaching the plasticard strip.

Seems I lean towards no1, what do you think?

And yes, one more thing. Should i use CA glue for the thin plasticard strip. I don't want it to lose shape.

For you last question I use CA for everything (except clear parts).

As for the gravel gaurd or also called rocker panel, I would get it looking the way you want it and mount it on the car before any painting is done. Then paint the car red and then mask off the gravel gaurd and paint it black at the same time you do the window frames and trim. Use a thin masking material like Tamiya tape or if you think the edge is going to be difficult to mask up to then cover it with Bare Metal Foil, trim with an exacto blade and pull away the excess. This leaves a very shrp edge and since the BMF is so thin it gives practically no paint build up along that edge.

Joel, just for interest sake: does the newer 206 models have a mask for that "206" sign on the from air intake (mesh)? If not, how are you planning to do it? I have to admit when I did mine, I think it was 99 or 2000 version, that was not included and I chickened out of it, rather leaving the mesh "as is" than screwing up the whole thing with a dodgey-looking (and very visible) hand-painted "206".

As for the rest... My short leave was way too long, it seems! Finished allready? Well done, you beat me by far! Got the roll cage assembled - with a few word of choice when I found the one arm a wee bit too short... Oh well, it was a quick fix and looks quite nice - pity it won't be visible! As of tonight/this weekend/next week the next step will be to start *evil grin* painting the exterior... Quite an interesting model, this one, with the gull-wing doors, etc. Had I not been so fast asleep I should have (famous last words) done a bit more with the dash...

No mask included unfortunately. I've read that people do take a copy of the page illustrating this step in the manual and then cut a template out of that. Could work. For my part it's easy as I have a p/e set in wich the mask is included. Hope that's answer to your question.

Mach 12003 - that's an awesome Corvette. You did a great job on that! I wish I could do big decals like that!

joelwideqvist - I agree with mach12003. I'd build the whole thing first, then tackle the paint issue second. The BMF trick sounds like the best way to go.

RCman73 - wow, 7 builds! I must have missed that. Can't wait to see the pics of the first one...

A little update on my build: the #63 2001 C5-R Corvette from LeMans
- within the last couple of days I have mostly just been puttying, sanding and priming. There were several body panel lines that needed to be filled. What should be simple has caused me much grief...
- I managed to get the vents in the hood finished. Sorry no pics yet, but they will be coming soon. As a reminder, I didn't like the way they were molded in the kit, so I cut them out and made new vents from plastic strip. They're not perfect, but to my eye they look better than the originals.
- I also re-built the rear diffuser (I think that's what it's called) under the back/rear of the car. The kit piece was attached to the chassis, and very thick. I used some scrap sheet brass to build a new one. Again, pics to follow later...

I'll be going on vacation for a week, so I'll be checking in, but likely without any updates (unless I can put together a travelling model bench to take along.... : )

Luke, great idea with having a mini compo for the GB badge. I like yours, but I did come up with an alternative which surprisingly also used the chequered flag Wink [;)], but also a stopwatch as there are quite a few rally nuts out there. It's on my work machine (the product of a rainy lunch break) so I'll try to post it next week.

mach, that is some superb decalling. I may call on your advice when it comes to the big Martini stripes on my Lancia Big Smile [:D]

How did the new testors lacquer work for you? It looks good in the pic.
What did you use on the wheels?

Some great photos here guys, nice looking models.

Someone makes a mask for the Peugeot "206" on the grill. I have one and also the "FORD" for the Ford WRC. Studio 27 I think is the manufacturer or Renaissance - I'll check tomorrow.

mach12003 glad you like it. I really like the new testors lacquer just follow the directions on the can a light dust coat let set 2 min then wet coat . Gloss coat 2 hrs later and you get a nice gloss finish. The wheels are painted with alclad pale burnt metal over grey primer then a black wash. mkhoot
