Avus,
It's looking good so far. Thanks for posting the pics. Hopefully I'll get a good digital camera from Santa this year so I can finally post some of my own.
My Prime Chance Greyhawk is nearly complete, but since I've last worked on it, I've bought an airbrush, greatly improved my modifying figures skills, and so on. I'll have to brush the dust off of it and get back to work.

I still have my Hokum to finish, so I'll be here for a bit longer. Big Smile [:D]

I had a GB die on me that I created...my "Fighting Ambulances" GB. Oh well, it happens. Sad [:(]

Thanks knight667!

I'm afraid this GB is dying ... no one else posting except you and me.

Wow this thread was hard to find ... it was five pages back!!!!
Well, I managed to make some progress and have pictures to prove it.
First one shows the cargo roof third attempt; chatting with intruder_bass I decided that the first was not accurate and the second was too wide. This one should be fine.

Second shows the side walls (again thanks to intruder_bass). Only thing I realized that the curved part is to big I'll have to reduce it.

Great work knight667.

Agree with blkhwkmatt, the decals you chose fit perfectly on the helo.
I'm sorry the "self printing" of my decal sheet didn't work for you but anyhow you managed to make a great build.

John,

Looks good to me, I like the decals that you added. Good job on the kit.

I have made very little progress on my kit, been very busy at work and kinda wrapped up in the FW190 that I have been building. Hope to make some progress on it this weekend though.

Thanks for sharing your build with us. Smile [:)]

Finished the Blackhawk completely last night, and I have to say, I'm actually pretty happy with the results. Here's a few pics for you guys/gals:
Right side
Front
Right (pilot's side) detail
"Lead Slead" detail

Kit: 1/48 Academy MH-60K Special Services Blackhawk
Paints: MM enamels
AM: BlackMagic precut canopy masks
Decals: kitbashed from my spares box, including custom decals from my 1/35 ALIENS APC ("Lead Slead" and "Grrr" w/skull)

Thanks for letting me take part in the build!

Hmm, could be your printer and the resolution on it. May not have enough DPI to be able to do small items. Like I said, I have not had a problem with the Testors paper. I have a HP 6110 All-in-One Photo Printer that I use. Not sure of the DPI, but it is way up there, I can print minute things clearly.

I once (and then never again) used a white decal paper from Tauro Models (an Italian company): the ink on the surface coagulated leaving only black spots on the paper.
Now I bought Expert's Choice paper but i haven't tested it yet.

What's the resolution of your printer (I mean the dpi)?
Mine has 1200 dpi so it prints out even small details; your lack of details could be caused by that and also by the scale: as I mentioned 1/48 is smaller than 1/35 so the stencils details might get lost.

Besides that your bird looks very promising. Can't wait to see it completed!

Thanks adrake2. I'd like to make more progress but I only have Sundays to work on my helo!

Sorry to hear you had a problem with the decal printing. What went wrong? They worked just fine for me.

I think it was a combination of my printer (HP Deskjet 3470) and the paper (Testors).

What happened with them? What settings were you using, etc.? I have had no problems with Testors (or any other) decal papers. Explain what went wrong and maybe I can give you some pointers for next time. I print my own decals all the time and haven't had any major issues.

Sure thing! Fed the paper in no problem, but when it printed it was kinda spider-webby looking...detail was severly lacking. Sprayed them (once dry, of course) with the Testors clear protectant that came with the Testors Decal Kit. Went to apply them and they looked awful. I'm wondering if my ink had gone bad or something like that...paper seemed find and my printers never given me any trouble before.

Okay, well...so far, I'm not that pleased with my progress on the Blackhawk. My attempt at printing my own decals failed miserably...they were completely useless and almost caused me to chuck the model across my workshop (which would have been bad). Anyway, after much pondering, I decided to go more with a "what if" scheme on this helo. Scream at me if you must, but I think it looks pretty okay.

Not the greatest pic, I was in a hurry to get out of the workshop and into bed...stayed up too late (you guys/gals know how it is!). Kitbashed the decals from my spares box. I have to say, it's my best masking job to date, but I can't take all the credit...99% of it goes to Black Magic. Big Smile [:D]

Anyway, I'll have it completed tonight for delivery to a friend on Friday (she doesn't care much what it looks like, as long as it's a Blackhawk). Constructive criticism is appreciated, but please, I know I screwed up already, so...

This is the last time I fudge on decals...next time I'll just spend the money and call Cobra!

Yipee!! I managed to make some progress last weekend!
Here's a pic of the cargo ceiling I'm making with help of intruder_bass' scheme.

Hope to complete it next WE.

Again, great work so far knight667.
I'm curious to see how the decals turn out reducing their size.
In 1/35 some of the stencils are barely readable; hope that in 1/48 they won't turn out a mess.

Looks much better to me. I've always prefered the black Nightstalker paint to standard US Army Helo Drab. It just looks much more aggressive to me.My 2 cents [2c] Thanks for the pics John.

Here's the updated pics:

Ripped the wings off, painted it black. After this pic, I painted the details (landing lights, strut shocks, etc.) and then Futured it. Hoping to decal tonight (got the Testors Decal Set over the weekend).

A little update on my progress. Didn't have much time to work last night, but I managed to rip off the wings and clean that up and then paint the helo flat black, or at least the top half. I'll turn it over this evening and paint the underside.

Sorry, the pics you have are of the test bird. See the orange probe sticking off the refueling probe, it is a test probe for airspeed, crosswind, etc. and other data. The upswept wings were not bought by the US Military.

For the Helo Drab paint, that is the correct FS #. If you can't get the MM one, you could follow Awood23 suggestion for the paint as well. If you look back through the UH-60 GB posts, I believe that someone has actually given the mix ratios to mix it yourself. If not, just post in the helo forum and someone will answer up pretty quickly.

Gino, thanks for the confirmation on the wings; I'll rip those off tonight. I can order the paint...I guess I'll just have to order something else to hit the $10 minimum at Great Models. Big Smile [:D]

Helo Drab would look O.K., but these aircraft, Kilo models, are only used by US Spec Ops, i.e. 160th SOAR and are usually in flat black, like almost all 160th SOAR birds. You may want to get the CC SOAR decals. Send me an email and I will send you a decal file designed for 1/35 SOAR birds that Avus and I developed. All you would have to do is reduce them to 73% for 1/48 scale and print them out onto white decal paper. You have to use white so the decals do not dissappear into the black fusalage color. The decals have a black surround that hides the white decal film. I used them on my MH-60L DAP, you can see it here: http://photobucket.com/albums/v231/HeavyArty/MH-60L%20DAP/

Suggestion for the color Knight.... try mixing your own? should be too hard, maybe not 100% accurate but worth a try. Olive drab with liberal amounts of flat black?

I just did some more research and found these pictures:

Those look like operational helos to me...with the same sort of fuel-wings that I have on mine. Granted, my color is still wrong, but the fuel tanks look right to me...

Anyone?

Well, ratspit. Disapprove [V] Thanks for the heads up, Gino. That's what I get for following the directions with the kit. Here's what the box art looks like, FYI:

So I'll strip off the uprights then (don't feel like scratchbuilding at all) and repaint. Looks like US Army Helo Drab is FS34031, does that sound right to you? I'm almost positive my decals are in black, unfortunately. Here's my dilemna: my LHS doesn't carry much, certainly not the MM paints in the 2000 series. I'd have to drive 40 miles to the nearest one that carries this paint. My alternative is to order it, but that's nuts to pay shipping for one bottle of paint...unless I need something else. I could order new decals from Cobra Company and do the helo in black, but it would be cheaper to order the paint. Suggestions, thoughts?

Note: whoever can guess where "Well, ratspit." came from wins two points. Big Smile [:D]

Hope it is not too late, but OD Green is not correct for a US Army helo. Standard UH-60L is US Arny Helo Drab, it is a dark green, almost black. Testor's Model Master has the color in the bottle. For a 160th SOAR MH-60K, the color should be flat black with dark OD Green markings. See Pics.

Black MH-60L/Ks

Also, the upswept ESS wings were only a prototype and never approved/purchased by US Military. All current MH-60Ks use the standard downswept ESS wings.
