Jules, the spiral is a decal, set down with Micro Sol over Pledge.
For washes I use artists oils mostly.
Sometimes their finish is a little 'grainy', so I turn to the MM Raw Umber.
After that, the rest of the weathering is done with pastels mostly.
In this case, I used smoke to enhance all the panel lines and for the heavy exhaust stains, then used pastels, black with a touch of white ground in, for the rest of the panel line weathering.

Worked pretty well I reckon.
As for the decal weathering/panel line problem, I used to have the same issue.
Now days I place the decal on, set it with Mico Sol, and while its still softish I slice along the panel line.
2 or 3 more light applications of Micro Sol, and after the final one, I use my finger nail to really 'push' the decal into the panel.
Then I wash as usual.

Works every time, but you have to be patient and wait for around 30 minutes after applying the Micro Sol before touching the decal, otherwise the decal will tear.

BTW, have sent some stuff to you today, lemme know when/if it gets thereSmile [:)]

Thanks for that Tweets, I was quite concerned about not having the wash in the decals, i would apply the wash wait for it to dry and then wipe it off and then watch it come straight out of the panel line's over the decals.......
I'll try that way of doing it on the Mustang.......And thanks for the goodies i always love getting model stuff in the mail, I'll let you know when it gets hereThumbs Up [tup]

well that little wdgeon I decided to use for this group is a bit frustrating.... it's a 70's kit I got off ebay and one of the few US Coast Guard things I found out there so went for it...

gaps were incredible in the body but nothing compared to the floats.. .the plastic is misshapen and mis-molded in a few places with me having to actually use putty to fill areas the plastic didn't flow to. So far it's starting to resemble (vaguely) an actual aircraft so we'll see... I have until Sat morning to finish this as it was meant for my dad (he's in the USCG Auxillary) but being he's retired USN as well he might get an SBD for Xmas instead Wink [;)] (my USN A/C GB kit)

Being there is next to no detail on this plane I don't think I am dtracting from the little detail it did have by my sanding and such ( with a few raised panel lines here or there... ) so we'll see..

Sounds like your on a bit of mission there Tom.........

Tweets I'll pop on over to the A/C forum and give it a little bump for yaThumbs Up [tup]
thats one thing i've noticed about the A/C forum, topics move at a very fast rate and it's next to impossible to have a decent conversation, thats probably why i spend most of my forum time here in the GB threads and Aussie modellers, because i can have decent conversations with fellow membersMy 2 cents [2c]

Thought I was on my own, hanging here and in the Aussie modellers section.

You guys are right, alot more yakking goes on here, instead of quick answers, we actually have time to dwell on the topic.

It's cool!!!

I'm not going anywhere Jules... if I don't post for awhile it's because I've been busy, or because my work put in a new internet monitoring server and I am paranoid... so far FSM isn't blocked, so I am laying low until the newness wears off of it and I can go back to posting from work! right now my boss is acting like the internet gestapo and running in our office every 15 minutes "I saw you went to Office Depot... doing shopping for Christmas?" and my usualy reply "I was looking for memory for one of the assistant director's computers" Wink [;)]

Great point Tom, yes it's all well and good we discuss modelling, thats what these guys made this site for, and we are eternally grateful to them for itBow [bow]Bow [bow], but I for one do not like the idea of limiting my conversation with people like Jules, Mike, Darren and all the Aussies and adopted Aussies (yes YOU TomWink [;)]) to modelling only.
Some very smart people here, and intelligence is something alot of conversations lack these days.

haha I already pulled that one Tweety... actually we are keeping quiet and keeping off the good sites... in a wek or two she will get tired of watching it and go back to doing whatever it is she does... then it is business as usual if ya know what I mean...

Same thing happened the last time we got a new internet monitor.. just keep quiet and be all business like and you're clear free till the next time!

---edit---

just wait till I tell my mom I'm adopted! usually it's the other way around!!! Propeller [8-]

I feel the same.. it's great clowning around with yall... some people take it to the extreme one way or another... it's nice having people you can relax with.... makes the whole thing more fun! And as a proud Aussie I am looking forward to the GB! Problem is, dysfunctional me has to find something that not only noone else is doing, but something half the people never knew flew with the RAAF! Laugh [(-D]

I just gotta be me!

haha no, more of I wanna round out the builds... everyone has a favorite and usually it means the same group of planes.. (same with me, I usually like the ones they are doing)

But for group buiids I like to find something no one else is doing to help keep it in perspective...

::deep sigh:: ok... I'm a fringe builder... now what? Wink [;)]

Still waiting on that pic post of your next model! Ya know the one you spray with a regulated 155??? I saw your post in another thread about better painting with your Aztec, it was the same for me... until I got used to the 175, my Aztec kits were better than my 175 kits... slowly it has turned (quite a bit) in the other direction... just took some getting used to! and getting a 155 helped too! Next brush is a HP-CS Iwata! I promise I will bequeath my 175 to ya in my will! too bad I am only 38! by time you get it Badger will have the 796 out or something haha

Hey Tom iI've got a colour plate of a Dornier Flying Boat in Aussie markings, you know the tri-motor one the DO-24......
It's A49-4 DQG from41SQD RAAF painted in Dark Earth - Foliage Green......
I think that you could call that fringe building cause I've only seen them in German markings...........Jules.........

Is making the Bell47G a fringe build???

I so wanna be a fringe builder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I reckon converting a D model to the G model is about as fringy as it gets.

Or is it stingy?, cause I'm too poor to actually buy a G model 47.

*ramble ramble ramble*

Merry Christmas all you Aussies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny thing you should bring that up Jules, I was browsing last night and saw a list of WWII aircraft for Britain, and the different countries of the commonwealth... Fairly interesting the Junkers and Dornier craft were used..

here's the link to the Aussie aircraft:

Merry Christmas to all my friends here! And thanks for the honorable mention Sean! Wink [;)]

Tweety i would say that the bell 47 is fringe building, I've certainly never seen a model of one, but then choppers arn't really my thing but i did build Airwolf as a kid.....
The only Chooper i've considered building is an RAAF Huey from the Vietnam war mainly because of the book SAS Phantoms of the Jungle which is full of praise for 9th SQD's bravery in extracting SAS patrols under fire.....

Tom thanks for the cool siteThumbs Up [tup] I was hopeing to find a pic of these RAAF Dornier's but i havn't had any luckSad [:(]I'll keep looking because someone sometime must have taken a photo........Jules.......

Jules, heres a site with some info and a pic of the Dorniers.

It's not in RAAF dress, but since reading your post I got kinda interested to find out more, and in turn found alot of info about downed a/c from WW II here.
At least it gives you their designation numbers!

It's all good!

cool Sean! I have been poring over everything today looking for one single pic of that Do17... that would be a sweet build (if somewhat off the wall) for the Aussie 05 build... may have to suffice to the Do24 if Jules doesn't pick it up... I figure he has dibs on the subject since he is the one who brought it up!

I can get some PBY RAAF decals pretty easy... won't worry too much about group markings and such as I am sure it didn't have much if any...

Like I said, this would depend a lot on what Jules does as he got me into this... Wink [;)]

Sorry its a bit late but Yuletide Felicitations to you all.

I've just returned home from 7 days away and after unpacking (and opening a couple of delayed Chrissy presents) it was into "my" room and into our favorite pastime. I've now undercoated all the dozer and logging arch bits, and corrected a couple of imperfections the undercoating bought out. Maybe I'll have time for a picture or 2 tomorrow but she-who-must-be-obeyed is now talking about lifting the carpet prior to painting the bedroom. Now I'm fine with that but she has this mind-set that has me intimitely involved in the whole process!!
