I thought I might show some of my work. This is the 1/48 Hasegawa F-16A+ with Arizona ANG markings. The seat is True Details and the cluster bombs are from a Hase weapons kit.

looking good mark Smile [:)]

i was also quite perturbed by the lack of weapons in the hasegawa kits. seems like its a good way for them to make extra money by selling their weapons packs, but its also a good way to p*ss me off Sad [:(]

I've just realised that I don't have any paints for this build. Can anyone recommend a good paint (preferably Gunze, but other will do) match for the cockpit colours, and maybe a good paint for the airframe (I'm not even sure what the colour is called). I'll be doing an overall grey one with low vis markings. Apart from some decals that I'll buy soon, I'm all set to get building on this one.

I'm all set, too. Models, paint and AM decals at the ready! My pre-GB Tomcat is coming along nicely; almost ready for paint! Daniel, are you doing yours in the overall Flat Gull Gray (FS36440) or the Tactical Blue-Gray (FS36375,36320,35237). The cockpit is FS36231. Gunze has all these colors in it's line.

I may not get all 4 of these kits done, but I will have fun anyhow!!!! I am going to go through a ton of paint. Luckily my LHS has all the Navy colors in stock at all times. I am taking Jan. 14 off so I can get ready for this. (And it is my BDay anyway.)

Yes, let's saddle up, kit is ready, paints all set, decal set is here. Let's lock and
load and get the party started. Actually ready to commence this little op on the 1st of January. Ah, Mark, my b-day is on the 16th. Seems like it comes quicker every year!

jee whiz look at all these January birthdays! Mine isn't until June... Isn't the standard scheme right now Dark Ghost Gray on top- Light Ghost Gray on bottom? If it's changed lemme know so I can get it right. Later fellas.

Jon, the colors used and how they are applied vary considerably from squadron to squadron. Back in the day, there was very little variance from the official scheme. More recently there seems to be more variation but all squadrons seem to use all three colors to some degree, except for some like VF-102 who liked overall FS36320. You really gotta check your refrences, plane by plane.

I checked a couple of my decals sheets and one plane was FS36320 on the engine trunks and FS36375 in the tunnel and FS35237 on top. Another one (VF-213) is overall FS36375 with just the canopy area painted FS35237. As you can see, research, research, research. Hope this helps.

Looks like we'll have to extend the party out to 10 days.Party [party]

I think I'm just gonna buy a set of decals that look good and follow the painting instructions on that. With so much variation between schemes, that's all I can do. And there's no particular aircraft that I want to build.

HI Ga.modeler! I don't see a problem with you joining the GB. The more, the better! The "official" welcome will come from armorman. To post the GB badge you need to copy the URL of the image to the signature line in your profile. Just right click on the badge, left click "properties" and a window will open up showing the Address URL. You can either copy and paste the URL to the sig image line or you can just type it out. You must paste it between except with no spaces after the "g". It's actually easier than it sounds. Hope this helps.Smile [:)]

Rock n' Roll Ga.modler! Welcome aboard. I wish it were time to kick this build into gear but we still have a month to go. That 1/72 Has 'Cat is a great kit and it'll look great alongside your other F-14's. How many do you have built? Can you post some pics?

P.S. Thanks for the info bstrump! I forgot that I had a modern reference book on the Tomcat that I ordered from a company IPMS33206 recommended. It's still in the box as a matter of fact.

thanks armoran for the go ahead for the group build. i had over 40 at one time, and in all 3 diffrent paint schemes that the cat used. i have all of them in storage. i ran out of room and gave a few to the local hobby shop thats gone out of business so i cant get those back. those last 4 kits were the left overs and just never got built until now. i have only been back building the last year or so its time to clear out the closet.

Welcome aboard Ga.Modler.

I think I've found the decal set that I want, only problem is that I've got to order it somehow. It's called Anytime Babe pt.IV from Aeromaster (code 48-511). I'll contact a few shops and see if I can get them to order them in. I like the look of the overall grey birds with black tails and canopy areas.

Here is a link to it if you want to see it:

Tomcat decals

I'll be doing the 3rd aircraft if I can get the decals and if I don't find something better.

Okay, to get you all ready to start this build, here is a pic of the Academy cat that I built when I was 9 or 10 years old. Go on have a laugh, you know you want to. Hopefully I can do a better job on my next one 10 years later. BTW, this is probably the best looking angle of this model, the other side is even worse.

I just saw on the Navy News web site that the last F-14D deployment in the Atlantic is in work ups now for their cruise next summer. This is a sad time for Cat lovers. I still remember seeing a D doing a flight demo at NAS Whidbey Island, WA. He was hauling buns back and forth over the flightline in afterburner most of the time. He would pull high G bat turns aiming those engines right at the crowd. LOUD!!!!! During his final high speed pass, the vapor cloud was building around the shock wave, then he pulled up and BOOM!!!! Slipped through the sound barrier. What a show!!!! But will soon be just a memory like the F-4, F-101 and F-106. Big with lots of NOISE!!!!

I have started my tomcat for this GB. I just couldn't wait any longer. And as I have nothing else to build for a while, I needed to start on something. Anyway, I sprayed the cockpit with some FS 36231 today and wiil start on detail painting tonight. When's the official start date? I don't think I'm too early am I?
