Two 20mm + the 30mm? Hmmm....What kind of recoil force would that produce? That Hog may need JATO bottles just to keep it in the air when the pilot squeezes the trigger!

Good news - I'll close on the house in a few weeks so the move IS happening and one of the benefits of the new place will be a dedicated workshop area for my models. Whoo-hoo!

I had been tossing the idea around of adding a couple of gunpods to my A-10, maybe not in the 20mm range...but it would make for a cool "What If" type of loadout. Guess it'd give a whole new meaning to the term "steel rain"!

Trigger, good to hear you'll be getting a space to yourself! I share my area with the kids' tv and computer, so I sometimes feel guilty if I want to work while they're watching cartoons (admittedly, there are some that I can watch, but some of them drive me from the room). But I'll be getting the decals on soon, then I'll post more photos.

actually the F-4 Chico the gunfighter added 2x 20 MM gun pods to the F-4E's internal 20MM. I was thinking of taking the concept to a rather RADICAL level with the what if Hog. By adding 2x20MM under EACH wing and another on the CENTERLINE hardpoint for a total of 5X20MM pods plus the Gau-8 30MM. i know such a loadout would be totally impossible BUT just think how fast the enemy would run away just from hearing that beast on a strafing runEvil [}:)]=Dead [xx(]Dead [xx(]Dead [xx(]badguys

Given the guns and that kind of straffing run it would produce, Steamroller's got a nice ring to it.

Just like the ringing in the ears that anybody not shredded by that beast would be left with as it circled around for another pass...

I'll be looking forward to seeing this one when you get it done, PanzerWulff. Post some in progress photos if you can.

Hey Panzerwulff,

If you're interested in doing a 2-seater, the only kit available is the Trumpeter 1/32 A-10 N/AW. I'm workin on that one for the GB (although I don't think it'll ever be finished) and I'm doing it up as an Army A-10D attached to an Attack Aviation Battalion. Full loadout of rocket pods and 24 Hellfires is going to make it very interesting indeed!

Jon

I was thinking about it for my Tiltrotor COIN, but you ought to finish your A-10D in ACU an scheme!

ACU scheme, huh? Hmmm..... I was hoping to stick with Helo Drab.... but then again....

I may look into the new ACU pattern. It seems that someone has finally wised up and put more GREEN in! They're gonna start being issued later this year. I may wait until they're available before buying new uniforms.

Helo Drab or ACU, either one would make for a good looking warthog!

Agreed. Either Helo Drab or ACU would look good on the Hog. Helo Drab because it's well, Helo Drab Big Smile [:D] and ACU would look good because it'd be so damned ugly on a twin-tub Hawg.

Black markings if the airframe is overall Gunship Gray
http://www.ndu.edu/nwc/nwcCLIPART/US_AIR_FORCE/Equipment/Attack-Fighter_Aircraft/AC-130/usaf-ac130.htm

However, AFSOC these days tends to paint their Herks in a two-tone gray scheme with counter-shaded markings.

I started putting the decals down on my A-10W, just the stencils so far, but I've run into an issue. I had planned originally to use some hi-vis F-4 markings for VMFA-333 on this one, but it was going to have a gloss grey over white paint job then. With the MARPAT I just don't think it'll work. So now I'm trying to come up with a way to paint on the tail codes and "MARINES" on the engines. Any suggestions? I've looked through my scrap decals and nothing really looks like it'll work.

Hmmm.. glancing at the pix of your A-10W, I would look at a strategic placement of black stencils on the tail. Treat the stencils like your name tape, where the black letters act as part of the MARPAT. Check your e-mail when you get a chance.

Thanks, Trigger, that's what I had in mind but just a bit bigger. I think I may have to nose around my wife's stamps, she has several alphabet ones, maybe I can use those to make some stencils and I'll just paint the markings on in flat black or maybe a lighter green? It'd be subdued, but wouldn't disappear into the black already on the airframe.

Funny thing about name tapes, the first ones had the black in them, but people had a hard time reading the name in black, it would blend into the woodland pattern! So now nametape materiel has no black in the digi pattern. Similar issue with enlisted rank on collars...you have to get close to see if it's a master sergeant or a first sergeant (BIG difference!) walking your way if you don't know them on sight.

Heh heh... you'd think someone would have noticed something like that during the wear tests

I'm prepping a sheet for Jon for some Apache markings and I'll have a ton of room left over. Say the word and the sizes, and I'll include as many markings as you like (as long as they're black!)

Hey Panzer! Thanks for bringing up the AC-130... now I'm scrolling thru eBay looking for one!Mischief [:-,]

Thanks for the offer, Trigger! I'm such a glutton for punishment that I think what I may try with this one is to trace onto the model the letters I want, then I'll mask them off and take a shot at hand painting the letters, using several colors to contrast with the background MARPAT...

Heck, I got the MARPAT to work, so maybe I'm overconfident in trying this method? Next time, I'll plan out the decals and make sure I don't lay any black paint in those areas, since one of my stars & bars looks like a big black circle now...oh, well, live and learn.

Added 8/13: Here is what I've gotten done today. Side note, I lost the HUD for my A-10, so I scratched one out of scrap styrene, and I think it'll work just fine. Here are the photos:

The Loadout:

My scratch stinger pod:

I was about to ask where the Stingers went, then I saw the second pic up close. Clever solution there LJ! I like the overall loadout too.

After looking at the last pic I do have one question though - air-to-air refueling will be accomplished by flying boom?
