I always use Gunze acrylic silver, not because of adhesion problems, because I've never had any, but because it shows up blemishes like nothing else!!!

Speaking of which, I gave my Hurricane a coat of silver last night, and will probably spend the next few days sorting a few little problem areas here and there. That rear wing to fuselage seam is just not right!!!!!

Picked up my MS 406 for the NA GB as well yesterday.Big Smile [:D]

Thanks guys ... I almost always use acylics, and have never had adhesion problems. Although, Tom, as you said - I do see some value for whites and yellows.

I will have to give it a crack Wink [;)]

Jay - you can either use the manufacturers primer (not flat paint) like MM light grey primer, or Tamiya white primer... or Krylon primer or very fine auto primer to prime your models... I have used the MM and Krylon primers with success, my first chouce would be the MM or Tamiya primers (or any model paint manufacturer) then the auto "very fine" primer and Krylon last... but they all will work for you! with enamels it is not such a problem but now for acrylics it is a MUST for me!! and also when painting colors with poor coverage ability like White and Yellow...

But can you use any flat paint (like a light grey or in my case for the Hurricane, sky) for primer or do you ave to use the manufacturers "primer".

after my martlet I am dead sold on priming.. I did it as I was using Vallejo acrylic and I kept hearing horror stories about its' adhesion... that stuff went on smooth, and didn't come off... not even one flake!!! it also helped me spot a trouble section before I put the paint on where I needed to touch up some sanding a little before going that far...

Cossack I prime for basically the same reasons as the guys above ie checking seams, scratches, etc, etc. But I also find priming a must if I am spraying any kind of satin or gloss paint, as the primer gives the paint something to bite into and gives you a much better coverage IMHO. I find it not as vital when painting with matt finishes, but it still helps. Just my My 2 cents [2c]

Cheers

darren, I know what major resin surgery is like. EWith my mig-29, aires cockpit was designed for the kit, but Even to get it to rudimentary fit, you have to razor saw off most of the kit front area, and then some MAJOR filing sanding and then filling to get a good fit. Thanks for the advice.

I always prime my builds to make sure all seams or other blemishes are gone & to help with final paint adhesion. I only use Floquil grey primer applied with the AB.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!Yuck [yuck]
The disks were bad enough!!

CossackSame as Pingy, I have never primed a model, except for Alclad(duh!).
I'm pretty fastidious about imperfections, and will spend an hour looking over the completed kit from every angle looking for the slightest blemish.
Then I give it a quick wash over with alcohol (1 for me, 1 for the kit, 1 for me...........)
and then start painting.
Have never had my acrylics lift off of the kit yet I might add.

I sprayed the interior of my spitfire with a home brew mix of interior green today. Not sure about the shade, but I think it's close enough. Now it's onto detail painting, washes and dry-brushing.

Cossack The main reason I prime is that it shows any defects in the surface. It's alot easier to see scratches, seams and blemishes when it has a coat of primer on it. It'll also help the paint make a strong bond with the model. It's not absolutely necessary to prime, but I always prime my models with Tamiya spray can grey primer.

Guys,

Sorry for not a lot of talk - flat out at work Sad [:(]

However, one comment in here has me intrigued ... Priming. I have not primed any of my models before - preferred to use multiple light coats. Can someone please explain the benefits of priming?

Jay Just keep on practising. It's all you can do.

Can't see any pictures at the moment as I'm at work, just red crosses. Need to evict my other half from the Mac tonight and try and catch up on everyone's progress.

Also on the cards for tonight, is priming my Hurricane with a coat of Gunze silver. Hopefully it won't need too much in the way of corrections, though I'm worried as to how that rear wing to fuselage seam is going to look, especially after my rescribing efforts!

I'll post some pics soon.

Where are we with the NA GB? I'm looking at an MS406 in RAF markings with French camo based in Egypt at the end of 1940.

Tanky, True Details make A1 quality stuff at a very reasonable price. Some of their older catalogue is ex KMC (their Beaufighter cockpit for instance) but still very good quality. The only word of caution I would give is make sure the resin cockpit you get is made to match your model/brand of kit, or you could have some major resin surgery ahead of you.

Usually pretty good. This set is fairly simple but does improve on the kit parts.

Thanks, Darson, Tweety and Tom, I'll try again tonight, maybe. As for Primer I have only really used a base coat of a light grey in the past. That is what I was planning on doing in this case but I guess I need to practise some more Big Smile [:D]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the BoB GB Flyingraptor & dstrebe, I've updated the first page with your builds. Don't forget, this group likes lots of progress shots and plenty of yapping (the topic is not all that important Big Smile [:D]).

Jay I use MM and Humbrol emamels and the advice on thinning ratios and air pressure that razor gave you is spot on. The only things I would add are, if you find the paint is coming out too thin, then add a bit more paint to the mix (a little at a time) until you are happy with it. Are you priming your models, if not you should? A primer will give the paint something to bite in to. Also, don't forget to keep the ab moving over your model so that the paint doesn’t get a chance to puddle.

Cheers

Tweety - keep the disks.. Kremps decided to give it one more go and moved back in over here... Wink [;)]

Jay - I use either MM or Vallejo (Color of Eagles) acrylics... on the MM I do thin mine a bit but thats just personal preference... I know lots of people that don't so it works that way as well... Tamiya you have to thin, but with their thinner.. others use alcohol etc... but if you are just getting back into airbrushing with the thinner it is much more forgiving... it has a retarder in it that helps the drying spped by allowing the time for the paint to settle...

Bob - no rush! and I know what you mean about the 11 yr old thing.. I am a network admin for a large school district here in TX and the kids keep me busy trying to block them from totally taking over the network!!! And there's countless times I have walked by a room at a school and see a 5th grader showing a teacher how to get into such and such program...

It is a good idea to thin your paints a little.
I use Tamiya and Gunze acrylics exclusively, and thin both of them.
Usually 2/1 paint/thinner ratio, through an Omni 4000 a/b.

I use a custom thinner mix to help minimize tip dry, which is the biggest pain with acrylics.

Thanks Razor, I looked it up on the AB techniques area and that was the general consensus. I was getting the watery paint look, argh, I'll just have to paint over it. But does it work (not thinning) for different manufacuturers? I have tamya, MM and pollyS paints to work with.

Darren, Thanks for the post of the P-40 review. Kinda surprized he didn't mention the multi insert fuselage. Might mean it wasn't much of a problem.

I laugh because I have an 11 yr old son and I have to do the same thing all the time!!! Glad I am not the only one.

Jay, If you are using acrylics you don't need to thin them at all. If you are using enamels then yes 2-1 or 3-1 depending on your paints. Keep your air pressure at about 15-20 psi (closer to 20 usually) and on the Paasche H close that nozzle until the paint is just barely coming out. Then open it more as you get familar with it.

Whoa hold-o-stoppo. I think I gotta go to AB school again. I finally was able to bring it out and do some spraying with it. I have forgotten much! It's not like I was a wiz before anyway. What is a good mix, 3 parts paint to 1 part thinner right? I remembered to wipe down the model yes, but I got a little heavy on the spray ! I guess I'll just have to play with it some more to get the right feel. I think better light would help too in my AB work space. Dead [xx(]

oh well, "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again" right? or was it "If at first you don't succeed then get all mad and break your tool in half, throw it on the ground, stomp on it and give up"

I'll get it yet.Smile [:)]

The 'proposed' 109 GB has my interest-running out of room on my schedule though....just need to give up sleeping I guess.
