bob... looks good! that tail section looks exactly like you showed us in the pic! I wouldn't beat yourself up... you really fixed her up! I would be more than satisfied with that.. I've heard the Hasegawa He111 goes together real nice.. I have one in my stash and after I finish the Typhoon I want to do for the RAAF build I might break it out just to play with!

I didn't get much accomplished so far today... just a few decals.. hope to have them finished by tonight!

still need to do some work on the SBD hopefully tonight...

Question [?]Question [?] Maybe my intelligence level is dropping, but the vast majority of this thread seems to be passing over my head like a flightful of geese getting their @$$e$ south for the winter. Would some kind sould care to explain bits and pieces of this conversation? Except the models. I understand the models. I like the models. Yes. Models, yes.

Sean, I don't get what you mean by wash number 2, can you give me a bit of a run down on the technique? Normally I only apply one was to the panel lines then add a few streaks and stains with pastels.

Tom, great looking job on the Martlet but I'm curious, how are you going to apply a flat coat with the canopy unmasked?

Bob, the 111 is looking excellent, with a bit of weathering it should turn out to be a real beauty.

Darren, it's not glued in yet.. I just stuck it on for effect... I need to wash it as it has a bit of residue on the inside of the canopy, then the last thing I will do on the Martlet is glue it on.. that way I can make sure everything is painted/weathered/dullcoated without messing up my canopy (masked or not)

BTW: got 3 nice large bottles of Future for you guys but the mail boxes etc. place was closed (arrgghhhh) will mail it tomorrow!

Tanky, I think it's an Aussie thing. Great people but a little daft if you get my drift. I spent a few months Down Under on a work assignment a few years ago & loved the Country & it's people. But ever since, all I can play on the stereo is old "Men At Work" CD's. Smile [:)].

Maybe You'll understand as you grow older Big Smile [:D].

Sean, anxious to see pics of the 109. Hoping it's not better than mine Big Smile [:D]

Bob, Nice job on the Heinkel, looking good.

Tom, The Martlett is coming along very nicely.

On my 109, finished the decals today. Now for a little light weathering & final assembly. Did a wee bit on the Hurricane today, but nothing to brag about.

Tanky, the dinner thing made me crack!!!Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

Rick, Men At Work cd's huh?
You better be eating some vegemite with that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darren, the second wash thing is something I do to my models to give them a shadowed 'reality' thingConfused [%-)]
Ok, take the belly of my G14...

The streaking isn't from pastels, nor is it pre or post shading.
I applied my first wash as we normally do, to highlight the panel lines etc.
After removing the excess, I get another wash prepared, usually a shade darker than the panel line wash, and go over all the panels, from front to back, and apply it a little heavier at the front of each panel.

When I wipe it off, I get closer to the natural 'streaking' effect that would be seen on these aircraft.
Seems a little odd, but after the application of some smoke, and a flat coat, it looks extremely effective to the naked eye.

The same thing is done to the top of the a/c also.

You can se it mostly trailing from the lump above the wheel well, and some on the aileron, but this pic doesn't do the effect justice.

I'll try and remember to take a pic of my 109 for this GB as I go along with the second wash.
Should have it posted this week.

Rick - I apologize, but I guess for all the postings it seems I missed your 109, I noticed when Jules complimented you on it.. I love those yellow nose 109's! Looking good! Although I can't wait to see it dulled down too.. Future has a way of making an AC look silly... My Martlet looks more like an air taxi than a war machine right now haha

Sean... I like that effect... I won't be using it on my Martlet as it was fairly new during the BoB.. but will try it sometime later!

Ah...where to start. First off-thanks for all the positive comments. This is a good group to hang with.

Yes, there is usually food around when I work. I have to stake a claim on the kitchen table and I usually don't take the time to clear it off....

Jules-I used poster putty from an office supply store here, Staples. A little hard at first, but once you massage it a bit, becomes very pliable. Good adhesion qualities too. I just wish I'd had the forethought to apply some on the underside for weathering purposes before I sprayed the black..oh well, next time.

Hope to get a coat of clear on this pm, maybe a wash & decals tomorrow...or not. Wait and see.

Sean-love the 109-excellent weathering job.

Cheers

Bob

Poster putty eh Bob, sounds like it might be similar to blue tac, it certainly does the jobThumbs Up [tup]

Tweety I have a Question [?] Sir........I used the BMF method you told me about on my Hellcat and it worked like a charm, But how do you remove the residue from the canopy after the BMF is removedQuestion [?]

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Sean, nice weathering on the Gustav. I prefer my shelf sitters clean, but can admire & appreciate others who prefer heavier weathering.

Jules, Goo Gone will remove the residue, as will lighter fluid. Just don't go crazy using it. A dampened Q-Tip is all you need.

I...feel...so...slow...
All you guys are just cranking out the models, I am atill having problems finishing my cockpit! Angry [:(!]
The progress pics looks great guysThumbs Up [tup]

It must be my inexperience but I am having problems with the wash in my cockpit.Boohoo [BH] Can you add the same paint types in a wash? Like for example an acrylic on an acrylic? The cockpit is a tamiya light green and I down have any dark brown or burnt sienna so was using tamiya flat black. I make
the wash and apply it and once it dries it goes whitish and discolours everything really light.Censored [censored] Can someone help me out, how do
you make a good wash? This will be the third time I am repainting my pit.

I think my application to Happy Acres was pre-approved and gone through a quick processing! Arggh!Wink [;)]

Tweety, I noticed your location is Alice Springs, I just happened to be looking at a map of Australia, you must be out in the booneys, how do you ever get modeling stuff! How big is Alice Springs? Looks kind of like a sister location to Inuvik, Canada.

Also to the question of who else in the GB is IT...

sorry, I'm a GIS specialist, close but that only counts in horseshoes and handgrenadesSmile [:)]
I work on maps and databases and special analysis of spatial data but no computer stuff.

Jay, I can't figure out what would make a black wash turn out white. I avoid the potential problems by using enamels for all of the base painting & acrylics or water colors for the washes. Eliminates any potential for unwanted chemical reactions between similar paints & thinners.

Rick, how do you make your wash, and what proportions
Way back before I stopped 8 years ago, I would add a few drops of the accent colour I want the wash to have with several milliliters of distilled water. I didn't have any distilled water until yesterday and was using tap water instead, I supposed Calgary's water has calcium and other nasties and that could be making it go whitish when it dries.

I work in my basement, and don'y have a spray booth, and in the winter I can't really open the windows to vent fumes if I use enamals. That is why I don't use enamals, I really should get a spray booth.

Jay, I just mix the acrylic, I use Vallejo, or water color with plain tap water. Just mix by eye until it's about like strong coffee.

Welcome to the build Tanky. Glad to hear you have a Do-17, that's a fairly rare kit these days.

Progress on my 109, well not much today. Letting the decals cure, but did paint all of the fiddly pieces prior to final assembly. Did a little more work on the Hurricane as well.

Jay, when I'm washing a cockpit or anything else for that matter, I make sure that I don't wash enamel over enamel or acrylic over acrylic for the reasons that Rick said. For me this is fairly easy as I always wash with artist’s oils and I always apply a protective coat of Future over anything I'm washing.

Sean (tweety), [:0] that 109 looks awesome, I'll definitely be filing that little method away for future use, thanks.

Jules, welcome back and be very careful when using goo gone because it will take the paint off you canopy just as quickly as the goo if you're not careful. I normally use a 000 or 10x0 brush and very carefully apply it and remove the goo. You are right about the Tamiya Spit and the door, but I had to order one for my Hase spit and you get two in the pack.

Tanky, welcome to the madhouse my friend. I've added your build to page 1.

Cheers

great Darren... I got absolutely nothing done tonight.. but on a good/bad note will have at least half a day tomorrow to model. I came home in a pouring rainstorm and when I got here I kept hearing a "ticking" noise in the house... at first I thought it was Kremps fiddling with her dentures again, but then I tracked it down.. a leak in my roof... and water was leaking from the gypsum board in the ceiling... long story short there are two soup pots catching the water leaking from my ceiling as we speak.. I am going to spend at least half of the day here in case it storms tomorrow (like it is supposed to) to change pots then go to work... so I will be modeling in between pot changing...

on the Martlet last night when I brushed the microsol over the side fuselage roundels it wore off the color over the rivets... but on closer inspection it looks like worn paint at the rivets and is not displeasing at all! strange because the wing roundels did not want to seat down in the panel lines at all... but the side fuselage ones were so thin!!! all in all not a bad effect though!!! have the sqn codes on and waiting serial number etc.. before weathering tomorrow... should DEFINITELY have some progress by Sat! And I have decided the landing gear were sea blue... no other resources to contradict me and have seen the Martlet pics from the FAA museum (admittedly a Mk 5) but they are sea blue as well...

Tanky... New York City??? I drove across the cross-bronx expressway one night.. had 1/8 tank of gas but swore I would never stop there!!!! never again! Glad you decided to join us!!! This is a fun bunch.... (word to the wise... stay away from Tweety... he's off the wagon again... hitting upwards of 2 bottles of Future a day... in fact I just had to mail him 3 more bottles to keep him in supply... if he gets by you and you smell this "flowery" smell... RUN!!!) Wink [;)]
