AIRCRAFT - Battle of Britain Group Build (Jan 1st 2005 - May 31st 2005)

I haven't got a "warm up" build per se... working on my Naval Aviation a/c, almost to the point where the build picks up speed... got the coclpit 80% done just have to splap the fuselage together and paint!

actually I was thinking about asking to join! I've seen a few a/c and a little history around them so I'll jump in... when I find my build I'll post on that BG thread if it's already going...

Darren, thanks for that. I've got a bit of a late 30's fighter thing goping on at the moment, hence my I-16 and PZL P24G, and the 109 would fit that theme beautifully.

Think I'll just have to put that Hobbycraft 109 on my wish list.

I had a look at my Hasegawa Hurricane night fighter last night, looks like I'll be replacing the cockpit hood, wheels, decals & adding belts at the very least, and adding the wheel bay insert, as I'm not sure I can face cleaning up those ejector pin marks! Why couldn't they put those on the other side, you know the bit no one can see?

Once again it shows how different these aircrafts are from one to the next.

The main colouring on the sidewalls is different to a few other pics I have.
When I find em, I'll post em up.

In order to keep this thread alive until we start building I thought I might post a little update on where my warmup build is at.

The cockpit is done and assembled and has turned out pretty good. I've built it OOB except for the addition of the Ultracast seat with harness. The only other item I added was an oxygen hose made out of two different grades of fuse wire. It was easy to do and looks good, so I'll be using that technique again.

I was going to use the decal for the IP but once I applied it, I knew it wasn't going to look any good so off it came and the IP was dry bushed as usual.

If anybody else is doing a BoB warmup, post your progress and maybe some photos.

Also, for all those doing Bf 109 E’s here are a couple of superb cockpit shots I found during my reference hunting.

I have looked but I cannot find any reference to active Luftwaffe squadrons using the 109D while participating in the BoB, so I'm afraid they don't count.

I know what you mean about that Hobbycraft kit though, I am on a bit of an early 109 kick at the moment and would love to do the 109D in Condor Legion markings.

Darson, do ME 109Ds count? As these were stationed in Norway during the BoB, even if they didn't have the range to engage the RAF.

Just thought I would ask, I keep looking at that Hobbycraft 109D you see and the AM decals to go with it. Any excuse to buy another kit!!

Here is my list (to the best of my knowledge anyway) of the aircraft and the versions of them that operated in the Battle of Britain and who is building what. There are still plenty of more unusual aircraft waiting to be built if anybody is looking for a challenge.
As far as I can tell the F4F Martlet did not actually see combat during the battle, but 804 squadron FAA were equipped with them late in the battle so it's allowable.

If there are any changes or mods you would like made to this just let me know.

Those are always my last words when it comes to my build... ok this is it... I found my build... I'm making good progress on my USN Aviation build so should be in the clear for a Jan start... even might have time to get my dads two models out of the way....

Darson iv'e had no luck in finding a Do17 in 1/48 and i don't yet have the skills to turn the Revell Do217 into a Do17 so my builds will be the same as before a 109E3 flown by Werner Molders and a Stuka from StG 77.......This time it's final no more changes. Lol........

No problems Cruzr, I'll put a list together of what can and is being built and what is still available. There are plenty of knowledgeable people on the build who can help out and add to the list to make it complete. Also, even though most people have already done this, could you post a short note on what squadron/aircraft you are building? Once the list is completed I will post it back to page 1 of the build and keep it updated.

Hey Guys Im going to have to back out of this Iv got 2 group builds starting in January and I feel like three is just gonna kills me. Im going back to school in January and Its gonna be tuff getting in any build time. Thanks for leting me be a part of this for as long as I have.

January is fine with me, as long as the finish date remains unchanged. I probably wont get started by then, but it does give a little more wiggle room.

Hi all,
I have been thinking about this for a while now and have decided I need to put something to a vote.

How do you all feel about moving the start date for the build from Feb 1 to Jan 1 2005 (the end date will remain the same)?

My original intent was to leave Jan aside as I figured that a lot of people would be away on holiday’s etc. But I see a lot of multiple builds waiting to start a lot of interest in the GB and dammit I want to start building.

Anyway it's up to you, the members of this Group Build just post a response in this thread or send me an e-mail letting me which way you want to jump. Leave the dates 'as is' or move the start to Jan 1.
