Yeah, the 109 is a definate go.

And yeah, I'll do the Defiant, it's a cool craft.

And if I follow tho9900's idea, might be able to get some A/M bits.

lol! how does Arróz con Pollo sound? I's a South American dish.. think that might bring you closer to the CA kit? who knows? might even get you AM decals too! lol!

It works in my house... she even knows I do it on purpose... I do most of the cooking anyway because I like to, (saves me from washing dirty dishes) but when I bring out something out of the ordinary she always says "After dinner go order that airplane you've been looking at on the internet"

---edit---

or another idea... tell her she's been working too hard lately and to give her a break you will take her out to eat... then spring the CA kit on her in casual dinner conversation... "One of my friends mentioned there's an airplane out I've ALWAYS wanted to build, JUST RELEASED!" judging from her reaction you know if you need to order a glass of wine with dinner or the whole bottle! Clown [:o)]

Well, dinner is a must, as well as housework, washing the car, feeding the fish AND sorting the sock draw.[:0]

Not only do I have too butter her up for the Defiant, but I am currently trying to obtain a Trimaster kit, and we know the price on those things!!![:0]

Sad [:(]To think a grown man is scared of a 5'13/4 woman (If I forget the 3/4" part, she will remind me, and punctuate her sentences with furniture!!!!)

Ah well, recevied my Bf 109E4 today, so seeing how I go with the E3 and the Defiant, might have time to squeeze in the 4, or maybe might leave that for a 'North Africa GB', cause one of those is sorly needed.

Mike, It's up to you, but what you could do if finish the Spitfire, see how you feel and then put yourself down for the Arado or Anson if you want too. Your choice.

OK lads, I need some information. I plan to build either a Me-109 or spitfire for this GB. What I need to know is, what versions of these aircraft were flown during the BoB? There's just so many different versions of both planes, and this isn't really an area of great knowledge fore me. So any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The Bf109E, E-1, E-3 & E-4 were all used by the Luftwaffe in the BOB. The Spitfire MkI & Mk II were used by the RAF.

Pingtang,
The main Spitfire marks that flew during the BoB were Mk.Ia, Mk.II & Mk.IIa

The main Messerschmitt Bf 109 marks that flew during the BoB were E1, E3, E4 & E7

Darren Thanks for the tip. I must admit I was quite impressed with the Hase cockpit on first impressions, but I haven't touched the kit yet, so Ultracast might well be the way to go. I just need to find a supplier in the UK.

Pingtang The Revell kit in 1/48 is worth a look. It's a rebox of Hasegawa's E-4, and includes decals for Helmut Wick's machine. Definitely very suitable for this GB. There are plenty of AM parts & decals for these machines as well.

Rick,
No problems, you're now doing the E4 Yellow 7. Are you going to do the Defiant for the GB?

Tom,
I like your thinking Thumbs Up [tup], something a little different without being impossible to come by. Here is a link to a site with a nice history of the Martlet in FAA service http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/Aircraft/MartletWildcat.htm
BTW, 804 and 808 are the only FAA squadrons recognised as operating with RAF Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain.
Here is the link for 804 squadron
http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/Squadrons/804.html

Here is the link for 808 squadron
http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/Squadrons/808.html

Karl,
For accessorising your Hurricane I am personally a big fan of the Canadian firm Ultracast. I have bought a lot of their stuff in the past and I have found it to be first class. At the moment I have their Hurricane Mk.I seat with harness, replacement armor plate and a replacement piece for the fuselage behind the armour plate sitting with a Squadron canopy waiting to go into my Hurri Mk.I. Here is a direct link to their site http://www.ultracast.ca/

Sean,
Are you still planning on doing the 109 E3 as well as the Defiant?

Cheers

Tom, Bilek do a Do 17 in 1/72, this is the old Airfix kit, so you'd have to contend with loads of rivets, and raised panel lines! It would certainly be different though.

My Hasegawa Hurricane night fighter arrived on Tuesday, so I now have it stashed away ready for February, just need to get an AM canopy, wheels, wheel bay insert, and a few bits of PE for seat belts, flame shields etc.

I agree... it's actually an disgustingly ugly/incredibly beautiful aircraft... and it played such an important role... I saw a print on ebay I am thinking about getting... from an actual WWII photo of a Do17 gruppe...

I've found cooking for the wife works too... it has to be something out of the ordinary... I have a good list of Cajun and South American recipes if you are interested Wink [;)] oh.... bad part is you have to do dishes at the end of the meal too... but hey, for the kit you want is it worth it? it got ME an airbrush... actually a SECOND airbrush...!

cool, good to hear that Rick, I might pick that one up later for a "just for fun" build. It would definitely be something different to add to my collection.... let me know how it builds when you sink your teeth into it....

I noticed even squadron and great models only had it as low as $44.. of course then you add shipping.. I might stop by the LHS this weekend (the new one) and pretend I haven't been there before and see if they give me the 10% discount for saying I saw them in FSM. I've only been there twice so it might work hahaha... Evil [}:)]

I decided finally what to build. I am build an F4F (Martlet) ... figured you can't more different than that.. even though I have built them in US livery it will be fun to put the UK flair to it... an eyecatcher on my shelf.. ("Hey wait!!! ISn't that an F4F! That's an AMERICAN plane!)

Also I found out 2 squadrons of the RNZAF used the SBD-1 and 2... doubt it was in the BOB but might do one of those in UK garb for fun later too... put it next to the one I built in memory of my uncle... (tail gunner on a SBD-3 in WWII)

Beleive it or not I found the cure for my modeling blues... it wasn't going for a quick fun kit... it was getting into a box of an AM kit... lots of parts, 3/4 of them belonging to the cockpit.. I've had 3 hours at the desk tonight just prepping the cockpit and painting...

After going through my decal stash, I think a slight change of plans is in order. Only markings I can find for a Bf109E-1 are for the pre BOB Blitzkrieg. So I will change my kit selection to the 1/48 Tamiya Bf109E-4. I plan to do Ofw. Rudolf Rothenfelder's aircraft from 9./JG.2 " Richthoven ", Yellow 7, September, 1940.

BTW , picked up the new tool Classic Airframes 1/48 Defiant Mk.II night fighter kit at the LHS this morning. At $50.00 list, it isn't cheap, but it does look very good in the box. The innaccurate fuselage from their older release has definitely been corrected. Whether the fit problems associated with the old release have also been corrected is TBD.

Thanks tho9900 for your input, That monogram kit would be nice but shipping across the pond would likely cost twice what the model itself cost.

I was having a momentary lapse of weakness as usually happens whenever I wander into a LHS or scan ebay. To make sure it doesn't happen again I ordered my He 111 last night. Big Smile [:D] Hopefully someone will redo the Do 17 in the near future but for now it sounds like its more work than its worth.

Ok, I'm ALMOST certain the Defiant is the way to go.
Will have to find alot of research pics first, but I reckon I'll order it next week.

Thanks for the info Darren, I think I'll have to get that one.
I found a He 115 on eBay, but no instructions, and from all the searches I've done it is a pig of a build, with almost no internal detail, kinda shameful, considering how big the greenhouse is on that thing.

not sure about the Linbergh kit... you can count on it being an older kit, possibly raised panel lines. There are a few 1/72 kits out on the market right now: SK is the only one I find on Greatmodels.com, not sure about that kit either...

there is a monogram kit from the 70's or 80's on there too:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=70107&item=5931949077&rd=1

and a review on the Frog kit, pardon the english but it is a translated page through google:

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://ipms-france.ifrance.com/ipms-france/reviews/do-17z.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Ddornier%2Bdo17%2Bkit%2Breview%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff

From the conclusion I roughly see that they liked the hobbycraft 1/48 kit better just from the amount of detail it had... but that all the kits were not proportionally to scale or not shaped right... (I speak Spanish, not French so that is only an educated guess, maybe someone who speaks French can check that last part out)

Sean,
The CA Defiant is available from Greatmodels for $37.45 + $13.11 shipping (AUD$66.70) if you're interested.
I picked up my CA Meteor from Greatmodels and saved about $20 (and three months) on the LHS price.

Hey everyone, there is a 1/72 Linberg Do 17 on ebay right now. Anyone know anything about it, how bad is it? There is a frog kit available elsewhere too. I've noticed there is lots of AM stuff for the Do 17 including vac canopies and Eduard sets. Are either of these kits worth it?

The Classic Airframes 1/48 Defiant is available now, at least here in the USA. The LHS has both versions in stock. I may pick up the night fighter version, it looks good in the box.

Excellent research pics Darren, saved some running around.
Strange the 109's c/p colour seems alot lighter than most c/p pics I've seen.

Might have a gander at that Defiant, would b nice to do a new tooling.
