Aircraft-Baa, Baa, Blacksheep Group Build May 1, 2005 to Sept 1, 2005
Posted by fightnjoe on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 12:03 PM
fellow members i propose a group build. this build would be entirely of the birds of the famed blacksheep squadron. VMF-214.

the rules as i see them................

-only birds of the famed blacksheep squadron. this being birds flown from august 1943 to jan 3 1944. the aircraft were the corsair (see the following page http://www.acepilots.com/usmc_vmf214.html#black_sheep)

-the use of photo etch, aftermarket details, and aftermarket decals is encouraged.

-the building of one subject by more than one member is encouraged.

-the sharing of information and links is required.

-the implementation of the group badge is to be done only following the completion of the build.

-the sharing of in progress pictures is strongly encouraged.

-multiple builds by members is encouraged.

-you must enjoy the build.

both the f4u-1a and the -1d are acceptable for this build.

the following members have indicated a want to join in on this build?

now looking at squadron i believe that these kits are suitable for this build.
the a/c used by vmf-214 were the corsair f4u-1. i believe the -1d is acceptable also.
here are the ones found at squadron.

I just finished building an F4U-5N modifying it into a Black Sheep one. I used a different propeller and different canopy. I know it is not very close but I got this kit as a gift and I wanted to make a Black Sheep unit. I was looking for decals (very hard to find) and the only ones available in 1/72 scale are the http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=MS720511&Submit3=Go at squadron. I am totally into participating to this group build. I just ordered everything I needed. For the one I just finished (almost finished, since it needs decals and a lot more work afterword) I used tamiya paints, XF50, XF18 (Field Blue and Medium Blue) combined with different percentages of XF2 (white) and a mix of XF-55 (deck tan) and XF2 for the bottom. I believe the Gunze Sangyo paints should also work well, requiring maybe less mixing. Let's share all the info. Please include me in the list. Thanks,

Paolo

Yikes! I don't have the Arii kit anymore! Must have lost in a home move. Well, I do still have the Trumpter 1/32 kit but that'll be a longer build.

Joe,

OK. I assume any scale is good. I'll check the inventory tonight. I'm not sure whether to go with 1/32 or 1/48. I may have decals for 1/32 of the plane Pappy was shot down in. If I do it will be one of the old Revell 1/32 Corsairs.
I'll let you know for sure tomorrow.

That seems very reasonable to me. I'll be doing Tamiya's F4U-1D.

Tempting! I remember watching the show on TV when I was a kid - plus as a former Devil Dog I appreciate the theme. I got a couple of 1/48 -1D kits but was gonna put one in Honduran Air Force (Soccer War) markings & the other in Salvadoran Air Force (soccer war) markings. Of couse, the Hasegawa & Tamiya kits over here in Japan are plentiful & inexpensive! I'll let you know! - Calvin
