Finally got the rest of the paint on today and it's just about ready for decals.

Hi everyone. I have an update pic to show you of the Corsair as it came out of the paint shop yesterday. I went for the rough spray look on mine and I also lightened the paint to account for scale and weathering.

I start applying decals tonight.

Hey bstrump, I did the same on my bird when i took it to the paint booth, Just curious what paint did you use and how did you lighten it up? Mine turned out ok but its not 100%.

Hey guys,

I'm working on a 1/72 F4U, and I'm curious about how to paint it. I'm just learning to use an airbrush, and since I'm using a single action, cheap one, it acts more like a spray can than a fine airbrush. My question is, how can I get that "feathered" paint look on such a small model? I thought about perhaps using clay and spraying from an angle. Any thoughts, suggestions?

Also, I'm going to try the white/light blue/dark blue paint scheme. Should I lighten the blues a little more than stock since it's a small model?

bstrump,

The paint job looks great. I'm curious, too, to know what mixture you used.

Thad, Aurora, joe, thank you for your comments. Very much appreciated. As for the paints, I started off with Gunze Mr. Base White for the white. Then I used Floquil Intermediate Blue cut with about 15% FS36622. For the Dark Sea Blue I used Testor's MM FS15042 Dark Sea Blue cut with FS36320 and a little bit of FS36622 as a base. On top of this I added more FS36622 and resprayed the top of the wing, the cowling and the spine to get that sun-baked look. I didn't aim for complete coverage but more of a blotchy look.

To Jabbe, your "cheap" AB is perfect for the job. Just freehand the camo and afterwards use a brush dipped in thinner to clean up the edges. Just get the bristles wet, not soaked, and drag it along the edge of the pattern to clean up the spatter. How close you get to the edge of the pattern will determine how tight your camo is. Other than this, you can cut masks and apply them loosely to the model, ie, raised above the surface of the model.

Some Progress. I'm not real happy with the Trumperter Wing fold, Does not fold all the way without alot of stress, and it does not positively lock in the down position.

A loving family and a good job can really eat into your modeling time. I still have to Future, decal and weather this one but the end is definitely in sight now. This is only model number three and the first one I've tried pre-shading on. I still need to work harder on hiding fuselage seams but I'm pretty happy with the way this one is turning out.

Comments are welcome, criticisms are merely tolerated.

Thanks,
Steve

Looks good Steve. A little filler & a few swipes with a sanding stick would have got rid of the fuselage seams.

Yeah, I had tried filling and sanding with superglue but it just didn't come out right. I bought some cyano to use next time. Hopefully that'll work better.

Thanks for the comments.

You have a lot to be proud of on this build, Steve. This is only build number three? You're making fine progress. BTW, "superglue" and cyano are the same thing. My suggestion would be to get a really "hot" liquid cement like Tenax or ProWeld. When you flow some into the joint and squeeze together, liquid plastic will ooze out and act as a filler. When it hardens it's easier to sand than cyano.

Thad, hope you get the compressor fixed soon. Same thing happened to me about a year ago & it's frustrating to say the least.

Oscar & Steve,

both birds are looking real good. I still haven't joined the wings to the fuselage yet.

Some poor Photos, I'm getting brighter lights soon. I whimped out an did Lulubelle ( the decals I had), looks good, but historically a bit off!

Looks good Oscar. None of my references showed the red surround to the National Insignia, so one of ours is wrong Smile [:)].

A fine lookig build, oscardeuce! Nothing wrong with the photos. They show the model very clearly and that's all that counts.
