mattinhouston:
there is very little info on those P-47D models , because the 332nd FG
only flew the P-47 4 about a month before they started getting hand-me-down
P-51s.
a bit of creative license mite b in order...
they had mostly razorbacks in Olive Drab uppers & Neutral Grey undersides,
w/ a few P-47 bubbletops in NMF.
Fuse codes & all other markings remained unchanged from donor squadrons,
but they painted the tails red...

Picked up the Academy 1/72 P-51C at the LHS the other day. Just couldn't resist!Tongue [:P] Kinda cool since it comes w/ enough decals that I can put my Mono P-51 in T/A colors also with some AM bars 'n stars & a few other spare stencils! Big Smile [:D] - Calvin

thanx 2 a kind offer by rjkplasticmod, i will soon b in
possession of appropriate decals 2 finish my p-51d
in Tuskegee Airmen markings... if i can manage 2 get
them on the a/c w/o any mishaps, i will b done w/ the P-51D
(except 4 figuring out how 2 mount it in the dio, but that's a
whole other issue...)
my plan is 2 airbrush a coat of Future over the a/c before decals
r added... having never tried this before on any model, i was planning
2 do this as my personal modeling 'first', but since the D model is not
my 'official' GB project...
maybe the D will have 2 wait until the academy
kit is ready 4 decals also...
then i can mess them up do them both at the same time !

Matt, howdy from Houston! I don't think there are any Tuskegee decals out there... hmm maybe I can find some squadron codes at least and you could fake it out of a generic call letter set or something...

Aren't you the one who recommended Hobby Island to me several months ago? I remember someone from Houston did... if it was you.. THANKS!!!

Well everyone... going to finish my Typhoon for the Aussie build first, then up in the air if I do a P-47 from Mexican escuadron 201 in the Phillipines or the Tuskegee one after that... I really want to do both... probably the Tuskegee one as thats the one I have decals for right now...

Looking at this link actually answers another question I had, which was what color were the yellow theatre bands on the wings, answer chrome yellow.

Cheers
Darren

Thanks Darren, I'll give SMM a call and see if they can source me a setThumbs Up [tup]

Hey Jeeves, I am working on my P-47 D Razorback. I like your cockpit! I am just about done with the conversion and am still tryin gto find 1/48 (or any scale for that matter) of decals that would be for the P-47 Tuskegee. I would even be daring enough to put them together on my computer and print my own IF I would find some good references.
Got anything besides whats' in the thread??
Thanks

Jeeves, awesome looking pit. That Tamiya P-47 is a great kit, probably the best I've ever built out of the box.

Jules, I ordered my MM Chrome Yellow from Frontline Hobbies last night along with some other bits and pieces. I got an email today saying it was dispatched already. That's what I like to here!

Cheers Darren

Matt--

What I am planning on doing is finding a representative Jug from the Checkertail Clan and just change the checkertail to a red tail....as that is who the Airmen inherited their planes from. I have only seen one pic of a Tuskegee Jug in my 2 years of researching themcand that was a NMF scheme. So--- I would check out some Checkertail Jugs and copy the fuselage codes from one of those-- the Airmen left the old codes on and only changed the tail color as they didn't end up having them all that long to personalize them.

mattinhouston:
the Tuskegee Airmen P-47D is a rare bird indeed, w/ very little info
& virtually no pix available.
the info Jeeves is giving u re: TA P-47s being hand-me-downs from the Checkertail Clan (325th FS) is the only info i know, mostly razorbacks in OD uppers/ Neutral Grey unders, a few NMF bubbletops...
they only had the Jug for about a month in summer 1944
before they started getting 2nd hand Mustangs, & according 2 one source
the P-51s came from all over the place, not just the 325th...

You know what they say: "Can't get enough info."

There seems to be some conflict between members as to which site is the "OFFICIAL" site and as expected caused problems.

great Joe!! I am pondering starting mine this weekend as I have pretty much everything for the build I need... problem is I wish I had that decal set Darren posted... a lot more P-51D's represented in it than the one I have... the only D set out of mine is for Creamers Dream and I can't do that as I now plan to give the model to a friend of mine's kid... (naked lady nose art and being 8yrs old dont mix) His mother introduced him to the story of the Tuskegee airmen as a positive role model thing..

I hear what your saying Tom and from what I have read Creamers Dream was one of the more daring schemes in the Army Air Corps, although kids do go up quickly these days (just kidding).

Creamers Dream is the ship that I'll be doing for this build and thanks again to Thad for sending me the decals. I've got to admit I really love nose art on an aircraft, it really does add something.

Cheers
