well hopefully this weekend I can start on the Zero.. looking forward to a straightforward build without a lot of detail to it... I am going get my P-51B to do my biold for the TA GB... and hopefully will make more progress on the P-47 for the Latin American GB....

Tweets the old cow is like a fur rug when watching TV... just snuggle your toes into that 4" back hair and they stay nice and toasty!!!

Yeah Tom can you tell Aunt Gertrude from me that sticking a whole racoon into a pastry dish may not be the best method to make pies Wink [;)]

Or at the very least, make sure they are deceased BEFORE baking.

Traintrak, I used Tamiya XF-71 on my Zero's c/pit, but mine was a type 52, might wanna check just to be sure.
I lightened mine with some white also, just to get a little more realism out of it.

Anywho..... got some more progress done while waiting for my Mustang primer to cure....

OK- so I was looking at my Tuskegee Mustang build...and while the SBD isn't as flashy as the Mustang, I sure do love the lines on this plane.... kind of deceptive isn't it? Looks kind of slow and lumbersome...and yet in a span of less than 10 minutes, the whole balance of power in the Pacific was changed thanks to these birds... but then again-- apparently I am preaching to the choir Wink [;)]

Making progress...just slowly.

SBD-2 is primed. Used Krylon white primer in an attempt to lighten up the Testor's MM Intermediate Blue that will be used. Plan on 'pre-shading' with flat black acrlyic. Will have to post shade to lighten up areas.

Engine is done also. Hopefully I can get the painting accomplished by the end of next weekend. Still a lot to be done, but it has been enjoyable.

something strange happened on the download to Photobucket on the picture of the primed plane. Will correct later. Maybe....

Bob - good work, nice seam work too... of course the model didn't have a lot of fit problems so thats usually a given.. I love the kit engine... very few kits have I seen with a separate wiring harness... adds something to the model...

Oh and photobucket has done that to me before too... I thnk it's when it automatically downsizes your pic if they are a too big... sometimes it does that...

Ok-testing the waters of the unknown (at least for me). Trying my hand at pre-shading. Used semi-gloss Testor's acrylic. Will let dry a couple of day's before the Intermediate Blue goes on (with fingers crossed).

Great looking progress Jeeves and Bob.

I might have to get back into mine after seeing your progress. It took the back seat for a few weeks while I finisehed my spitfire, and now a Bf-109 of all things is fighting with it for attention (the only reason it has a chance of getting worked on is because I want to try some of that crazy luftwaffe camo).

Well today, after seeing the progress of Jeeves and Bob, I started gluing my dauntless together. I've got the fuselage glued to the lower wing halves now, and I might get the tops of the wings glued on soon. Test fitting the parts looks like the wings will go together without a problem. Gonna clean some seams up before I go any further after that.

Actually, I used a 'micro-brush'. Don't remember the trade name (Micro-sol?) at the moment. My thoughts are that I can lighten the areas that will need lightened with pastel chalk after the top coats go on. if I'm lucky.

As I sit here at my desk, I am looking at a 3.5" floppy that would have been an excellent straight edge-light and big enough to handle easily. Oh well, it is a learning process afterall...

I'm placing a Squadron order today but I can't seem to find any 1/48 decals for my VT-8 Avenger. Anyone have any suggestions for where I can find some?

Bob Have you thought about getting one of those cheap one's, At my LHS they have some for $40:00 AU which i'm thinking about getting just to see what i can do with it, I don't think that they can be used for preshading cause they do't spray a fine enough line but for exterior coats they should be OK Big Smile [:D]

nontheless you seem to have mastered the art of brush painting Thumbs Up [tup]

MrBee I'm doing the same kit but i havn't looked around for decals, i figured i'd have to scratch them together from leftovers..............

you avenger people are lucky tonight.. went out to squadron and greatmodels to see if I could find some decals... thought it was strange none were available for VT-8 so suddenly it hit on me to just put VT-8 in the search box and BAM!!! there they were.. for some reason they did not show up by searching for the aircraft.. They're special order only though so it might take up to 4 weeks for them to come in.,.. might want to see if you can find another place that sells yellowhammer decals...

withoiut further ado, go to www.greatmodels.com and copy and paste the following into their search thingy..

1/48 yhd48005 TBM-1s/TBF-1s of VT-8 & VC-8

I tried the same thing with squadrons site and came up with nothing!!

Hey guy's! Back from my Mobile,Al trip. If any of you ever get the chance to visit go see the USS Alabama Memorial Park - It was great! I'll be posting lots of pics on my web site in the next couple of weeks.

Sean thanks for the cockpit paint info. I'm still checking it out, there doesn't seem to be a lot of sources for IJN colors especially in the interior. Still got to check out that web site Tom posted the other day. Still waiting on most of my colors to arrive from GreatModels.

Bob that is an exceptional kit to have that engine detail, looks like your coming along nicely - I need to get on the ball !

Tom since you brought it up here's a few shots. The Alabama's original catapult's were removed before the Museum got her. They salvaged one off a cruiser that was "similar". They got there OS2U Kingfisher from a wreck in Mexico, restored it & at one time had it mounted on the "cat", but a storm damaged it , so they made repairs & brought it inside.

Phil - no prob... I thought you could find what you wanted there... thanks for the shots! I'm hoping the Battleship Texas one day gets a kingfisher. Rumor is it has found a catapult for #3 turret... hopefully they can get it soon. (The ship is right down the road from me)

MrBee - Kremps said she would be interested in that kiss... said it's been a few yrs since she's known the touch of a man... Wink [;)]

Of course that makes you wonder what Seans been up to?

Jules - not sure if you knew this but that medicinal potion you are talking about is Kremps own invention. From what I understand it is 97% grain alcohol. About 197 proof from what I can gather...

Jules-airbrush is on my list of things to buy. Just finding that I'm spending too much $$$ on plastic for GB's! Rattle cans are ok for some camo schemes, but I'm finding that I'm being pulled toward some of the more 'intense' schemes.....oh bother....

I have finally just about put one of my other GB commitments behind me so tonight was Midway night. I pulled out the Wildcat and started detail painting the cockpit and all the equipment that needs to be picked out with flat black. After about two hours and a bad case of eye strain I pretty much had it all done. Next step is to detail paint the instrument panel, but that's for tomorrow night.

Tom in my experience when ordering from Greatmodels if something is on "special orders" it can take literally months to come in. They told me that a special order is an item they don't normally order regularly and depending on the manufacturer it can take ages for some of things to come in.

Bob when you bite the bullet and get an AB (and you will Big Smile [:D]

) make sure that you pick up a small compressor with the deal. Air in a can is just not economical and you will find yourself going nuts using those things.

Darren-you're right...I will. However, instead of a compressor, I'm thinking of going the CO2 or Nitrogen tank route. A buddy of mine is a marketing rep for Pespi, so I think I'm going to inquire how one would get a used 'institutional' CO2 tank.

Other issue is buying/building a spray booth. I have a FSM issue with plans-just a matter of carving out some time. At this time, very little spare room in the garage (along with the climate control issue) and I worry about a spray booth being effective enough to keep me from 'repainting' the spare bedroom. Don't think the wife would want the bedroom painted OD....

Just thought I'd post a few progress pics of my SBD. The build is going OK for my first aircraft in quite a while. I know there are some gap issues at the wing root and the dive flaps are a bit off. The painting went OK too, I guess. Using the full canopy to mask the cockpit worked like a charm. The line between the 2 shades of grey is a little sharper than I was going for (although in a couple of spots it came out OK). I taped the line, then pulled it back off the plane at the edge to get a softer edge, but it didn''t quite work as I'd hoped. Anyway here goes(you can see larger images in my gallery):

Nice work Pete-looks good.

My experiment in pre-shading failed. Spray cans are not very forgiving. Also have a less than perfect surface area on top-not sure if it is a paint reaction-used Krylon white primer & Testor's MM Intermediate Blue. However, I think it is salvageable with the weathering I need/want to do. Will end up post shading with pastel chalks. However, this episode has convinced me to start saving for an airbrush. My dad has an industrial type air compressor and lives less than a mile away. Therefore, I'll probably just get a couple of tanks and visit him more often. Someone at work was telling me that there is an adaptor kit that allows the filling and use of old propane grill tanks (which I happen to have an empty one).

Anyway, where are some pics-beautiful day up here-80 degrees F. Cold and rain tomorrow though.

btw-as I was typing, the wife went channel surfing and low and behold, Midway is on AMC. Maybe if I'm good, she let me watch....

Pete - looks real good! I dont see the wing root issue... maybe it is the angle... looks like you did yourself proud on this!

Bob - looking good too! you're just zooming along! Something to think about would be one tank and a $60.00 compressor from Wal Mart... you could refill it at home... OR get a 25 ft or so air hose for the airbrush and leave the compressor int he garage and AB inside... quieter that way... if you build the spray booth according to plans it should get all your overspray... they have the flow rating to Cubic Ft down on those things... it'll suck out anything inside it...

Well made some more progress on my P-47 tonight so soon I hope to start my Zero... I think I am going by the advice on j-aircraft and try a "ash-grey" instead of IJN grey for the body... it'll look different that is for sure...

Darren... good luck on that Martlet ::cough cough:: I mean Wildcat haha It was an enjoyable kit to build if a bit simplistic but the overall result is good at the end... next one I build I am doing at the minimum an Ultracast seat and tires... the extrerior is fine on its own...

also on the GM ordering thing I agree... I just hope these people sell online somewhere besides there.. I never order anything from GM that is not in stock... once bitten twice shy...
