                        Speaking of masking kits, that is the last major task left on my SBD-2 (that and the tri-color stripes on the prop). Unfortunatly, we are doing a family visit road trip (8 hours in the car and still not close to a beach!) But I've decided that I can take the canopy, masks, x-acto knife (and I almost forgot the reading glasses, which could be a bit stronger Cool [8D]) & get it to the point where I can paint it on Monday (at home). Could probably do more but the in-laws have a two year old-don't want to press my luck.

                        Also, on Monday the subdivision will have a dumpster available so we (it's a family affair) can clean out the garage so I can set up the compressor & airbrush and start practicing. Hope to start painting early June, if all goes well......

                        Unfortunatly, when AM 'redesigned' their web site, the on-line builds were left out.Sad [:(] I sent an e-mail to AM asking if they planned on putting the links back-wait and see.

                        The older SBD kits didn't have the masks in there. But the recently released kits like the Midway SBD-2 do have them included I think (?). Same goes for the TBF/TBM kits. Would have been handy to have a set for the SBD canopy, but it's not the worst canopy in the world to mask.

                        I have the Hasegawa A-24 Banshee kit....the detail is very nice (not as nice as AM)- but the dive flaps are not drilled...unless you are patient, buy the aftermarket flaps...I have yet to build it- but I will be trying the drill route....better stock up on the Newcastle....

                        btw-I picked up an AM TBF-1C Avenger for the 'upcoming' Atlantic GB (thought it was going to start sooner-my mistake) off of eBay-makes the SBD look like a snap-tite kit! Will definatly be looking for interior pics in the near future.

                        I have to agree with Tom on his review of the AM SBD-doesn't require any extra parts (other than PE belts or Ultracast seats) but leaves plenty of room for detailing with parts provided.

                        hmmm only SBD I have built is the AM variety, I believe Mike has built the Hasegawa kit... he can give you a run down on it. I recommend the AM kit for ya Tweets because it is complex enough to be fun without being a chore as PE and resin can sometimes be. Once you complete the cockpit just sit back and marvel at what you did without any special effort on your part to go above and beyond what the kit has to offer!

                        I think it would only be right to open it up to all divebombers though.

                        I saw a pic awhile back of an Aussie SBD sent there by the US for evaluation. They were never purchased but they kept and used the SBD samples till they either were destroyed or just plain died. I'll look around for that... if not there is always that RNZAF SBD with the stomach running down the cowl with a beer in one hand and a champagne glass in the other! I've often thought that would add some spice to a modelers shelf!

Wink [;)] I didn't notice anything wrong with the flaps... the kit flaps are always warped anyway on the AM SBD's, just blame it on that! Wink [;)]

                        Which BTW I am prdering the PE flaps next time just to see.. I saw an online kit with them and it looked SHARP!!!

                        Thad-that's the spirit. I'm finding that now when things don't go as planned, I try to resolve the issue rather that stuffing the plastic in the box and walking away. Makes it a lot more enjoyable. And this hobby is a very long jouney, and I'm just learning how to walk, much less run.

                        Bob- this build was a hard build for me because everything that could go wrong did. To top it off, while I was taking the pics my 2yr son broke the dive brakes off and it looks like in my hast to fix it I put them back on wrong,#####. Im glad its over, but Im ready for round 2.

                        Did I hear an all Dauntless build?? Hmm....which to choose from....I still have a -2, -4, and -6 to build....also have the A-24, but I guess technically that is not a Dauntless, but a Banshee...

                        Great job Thad-I'm finding the AM SBD to be a challenging build. Enjoyable & rewarding, but still challenging. Guess I spent too much time with Monogram kits before.... My SBD is 85% complete (need to mask & paint canopy, few small parts, final weathering-just can't carve out time to finish up those minor things. June looks a little better, time schedule wise.....

                        The thing that scares me is when Tom mentioned the possibility of an 'all SBD build' in the future, I immeadiatly began thing of what theater & battle I would want to do....oh bother...Wink [;)]

                        As for my missus, she once tried to do a Kremps, and jump on me while I was lying down on the bed.
                        She bounced off, went splat onto the cupboard door, and slid down onto the floor into the foetal position, and called for her mummy!!

                        Thad Fantastic build mate, love the subtle smoke stain, looks really good.
                        All these SBD's kicking around are really making me wnat to build one, just so I fit in!!

                        Nice build Thad. The paint job looks great. One problem though......I think you've put the flaps on inside-out. I can see the rib detail on the top flaps, and that should be on the inside. Apart from that, it's a great build.Thumbs Up [tup]
