ok the magazine is an Air Classics special edition P-51 mustang vol5 1986 and i made a mistake it appears to be an early P-51 D without the tailfin extention i was trying to find a better photo myself the only markings i can see other than the national insignia with the white sidebars is the tail# 414817 there isn't much detail as it's a small picture taken from the island of the carrier where the plane is sitting on the deck but the plane is natural metal with a dark anti glare panel i dont have a way to scan but if i can be sent an adress to my e-mail i can mail a photocopy to them

Chris!!! you saved someone's day... for the moment I cannot remember who it was but they were looking for that exact pic and could not find it... if I find out who it is I will give them your name and let them contact you... I remember now, it was in the WWII Carrier Plane GB... let me hop on over there and tell him...

Tom-thanks for the update. Unfortunatly, we are often at the mercy of the media for our information, and the media sometimes has their own agenda. More often than not, I fear that they look to the 'extreme' story to generate ratings/reviews and oftenoverlook the broader picture. Granted, there is massive devistation in New Orleans, but I think that you have pointed out that it is a small part of a bigger picture.

I hope your in-laws are able to get re-established back home soon.

edit-two days off and no modeling (other than to pick up supplies). I'm getting lazy. With a little luck, should get the landing gear for the Wildcat painted today/tomorrow, along with masking the canopy (and the canopy for the Mustang).

Bob - Jules... the coverage is both right and wrong... there was major destruction but parts of the city are high and dry with no real wind damage... it's just the eastern part of the city that is affected. There is a lot of blame pointing going on right now but I think a disaster this size cannot be anticipated.. an area larger than the entire country of England was devastated.. over 90.000 miles (148,000 km/sq)... the sheer logistics of helping everyone is enormous... in fact after the damning reports on the people in the inner city of N.O. being ignored, now it is the people in the suburbs that are in inadequate shelters waiting for news and food... all the help has been diverted so there are others suffering..

I figured out the area involved for the benefit of our Aussie firends... the damage is strewn across the equivalent of 38 Sydney's in a square radius... that's a lot of area to cover even for a country with resources like ours!

::shaking head:: and here I thought you guys were hard core...

(Jules: don't tell anyone but I used precut masks on my SBD... and liked them! I'm just too lazy to order a set for every build, these came in the box so I was just curious and tried them...

Quilty as charged.......normally, masking the canopy isn't an issue. Well, not much of one anyway.... However, with the Accurate Min. F-6A, the frames are very shallow to non-existant. Then the Eduard masks were lacking adhesive properties. However, the thought of using the mask template as a guide to cut tape came to mind (and someone mentioned it-not sure which came first...Wink [;)]). Then someone mentioned BMF, which may work even better. That and I'm thinking of testing the address labels that one runs thru a printer. The canopy for the Tamiya Wildcat should be a piece of cake though....just a matter of working it into the schedule..... The planned four day weekend has been pared back to a three day weekend....Dead [xx(]

Bob To be honest with you i've started using Canopy masks for all but the simplest canopies, It's not that i can't mask them, I just hate doing it...........
Sigh [sigh] Remember the days when we built them in a couple of days, not worried about filling and sanding seams or canopy masking..........

Oh yeah...how soon we forget......Black Eye [B)]

I kinda remember reading that one of the newer kits (Dragon maybe?) had seperate parts-i.e., wheel & hub. Maybe one of the armor experts can help here.

Let me see......U-boats have no canopy or road wheels....yeah, that's the ticket! Big Smile [:D]

Bob, mate your just gonna have to face it, we are in a no win situationSad [:(]WWII A/C have canopies to mask, Armour has road wheels, WWI A/C have rigging and U-Boats have a whole heap of Holes in the hull that need to be opened, i spent about 4 hours opening up the drain holes in my 1/72 revell U-Boat.........

Sad [:(] sigh.....you are absolutlly right my friend......guess I'll just cut my losses and practice my canopy masking....and the occasional road wheel painting session.....Wink [;)]

Tom & Jules-thanks. Will probably follow your advise and go over it with a lightly soaked rag this pm. My understanding is that the oil wash is very slow drying.

Jules-yes, that was a FSM in the background-oil wash on a Tiger Tank. Inspiring me to do a piece of armor for the Battle for Germany GB-no canopy to mask!

anyone notice that alot of late 30's and early 40's navy and marine fighters have windows on their bellies even the early corsairs had em i guess it was for observation purposes or to give a better view of what may be blocked out by the wing?

Bob - good job!!! you might try a rag with a touch of turpatine (turpentine substitute) It will get some of the streaks off, but I agree... it looks good!! I like the way the oils blend so well....

First attempt at an 'artist oil wash'-I'm happy with it. Definatly easier to work with than the acrylic wash I usually do.

Daniel - don't forget once you're done with your mock up of Midway you could also do one of the Aleutians and the Dutch East Indies as well... those were both battles affecting Midway in one way or another... oh and while you're at it maybe one of Japan too...

I've got two of those things on the bench at the moment Jules. One is painted and decalled and I'm just working on putting a resin cockpit in the Mauve kit. I'll catch that one up to the other and finish them at the same time.

Last night, I marked all the panel lines I have to re-scribe. Turns out there are alot more panel lines on the Monogram kit than were on the real aircraft. Works out well for me, less re-scribing.Party [party]

Tom - This thing will keep on going forever if I start the Japanese aircraft too. After that, I'll do all the carriers, battleships and to finish it off, a scale model of Midway island......Wink [;)]

Yeah i didn't have the Mirror/mirror GB in mind when i mentioned the Gb thing in my last post, there was a similar Gb about a year ago that attracted a lot of members but like Daniel i just look at the Gb's i'm in and skip the rest cause i simply don't have time to build anything for other GB'sThumbs Up [tup]
AS far as this one being a neverending Gb i might have to build that Aussie P-40N late next yearThumbs Up [tup]
