The Hannerman,

Kittyhawk named "Black Magic" A29-575 was a P40 N-15 this is the quote from the Pilot Denis Baker "My aircraft A29-575 named 'Black Magic' because of my close association with the natives of Fiji, where I was born and the "Fuzzie Wuzzie's" in New Guinea when flying with 76 Squadron."

Ah! There was a Kittyhawk IV named 'Black Magic'. The one I'm refering to is A29-563. Different airframe.

Finally got back to my build after letting it sit for a couple of weeks. The basic painting was complete, but it sat there staring at me waiting for Future & decals while I worked on other projects. But today I gave it a dusting & then a nice Future top coat. Decals this weekend. Hope to post some pics soon.

hannaman - Where did you get your info from? A29-563 was originally thought to be the aircraft called 'Black magic', but it has now been found that the Real Black magic was A29-575. I've never heard of this John Blackmore you refer too, and I think there was only ever one aircraft called black magic. Even my decal sheet gets it wrong. On the sheet, the aircraft is A29-563 and the fuselage code is HU*L (it should be A29-575 and HU*E).

Daniel,

I was getting my info from Brett Green's book, "Modeling the P-40." He did "Black Magic" using the sheet that I think you have, because his is HU*L. I am by no means an expert on the Aussie birds. This is an interesting subject indeed. I will have to see what I can dig up. Do you know if there are any photos of the girl in question?

Pingtang-looking good.

Thanks!

Now that my project for the Out Of The Box build is complete full steam ahead on the P40 ! The fuselage is almost entirely closed. There will be plenty of filler work on this one. The landing gear is almost finished, just have to tack on the brake lines tonight, pit is now done. Will finish closure of the fuselage and begin on the wheels after supper...

As promised, I got the Hasegawa 1/48 E decaled over the weekend. The Cutting Edge decals were designed to fit the AMT/AMTECH kit, but fit the Hasegawa kit OK with a lot of Micro Sol & some judicious touch-up paint. Next step is weathering & then final assembly. This Puppy is in the home stretch Smile [:)].

Nice work Rick...no signs of distress at all on those "non confirming" decals...looking forward to the weathered bird...

Thanks Joe. The tiger decals took 4 applications of Micro Sol before I was satisfied. They still didn't fit the lower cowl lip very well, but some touch-up paint of the red area solved that problem.

Great job, Rick. The decals looked like they behaved well after the Micro-Sol. I am finishing up my P-40 B and hope to have some pictures ready in a few days. I used Sky Decals...have you ever used this brand? There are plenty of birds represented on one decal sheet, but no stencils. I have heard that AVG planes didn't have stencils, but is this true?

Thanks guys, glad you like her.

I've never used Sky Decals, so can't help you on that one. I can't say for certain on the AVG & stencils, but I don't believe they had them.

Great looking bird Rick. The Hasegawa kit is real nice. Now that i have done the N and seeing your E.... I think I will just have to do another. I found out I am getting a gift cert from the LHS for the B'DayEvil [}:)]. For my 1st GB... this has been great. You guys are turning out some really great aircraft.

Rick Great looking build so far. Glad to see those decals went on well, the tigers could have been a real PITA if they didn't co-operate. Thumbs Up [tup]

The fit on my Monogram P40B just, well lets say if anyone has any spare sanding sticks I will send you my address and a check...

I am taking my time and dry fitting but it looks like a long way to go...has any one else encountered fit problems with this kit? The biggest issue is with the nose. The radiator (?) intake between the guns is worrisome. The section running down the fuselage is lower then the intake on the cowl and that piece is very thin.

Calling all expers out there....
I am putting the finishing touches on the R.T. Smith #77 AVG Warhawk. So far, my references are split on this: did the wheel have the Ying/Yang design on them? Or were these wheel covers (Dust Caps) for when on the ground? My decal sheet doesn;t call out for them, but I have seen postings on the web where the #77 has them.

Can anyone say with some degree of confidence one way or the other?

Thanks for all of the nice comments guys, really appreciate them.

Joe, the Monogram P-40B goes back to the 70's or early 80's & I think the molds are wearing out. The Hobbycraft kit fits a lot better, but has some accuracy issues. The new 1/48 Trumpeter kit is currently the best P-40B kit available, although the interior is best replaced with AM.

If the molds are wearing out my kit must have come from one of the oldest molds! Trumpeter makes some great stuff but I am a bit of a cheap Censored [censored] so getting a new kit may not be in the current realm of possibility....I believe that I am going to stick it out...it if goes to poop I will be switching off to something in 1/72 scale, P40B again...

The wheel covers were on the aircraft full time, not just on the ground. They were intened to help airflow since the wheel wells are open on the P-40. Most references I've seen on #77 had the Ying/Yang symbol painted on the covers in a Red, White & Blue scheme.

Thanks a million, Rick.

I'll add them tonight, add a light coat of Future to the underside and I should be ready for a light wash in a few days. Hopefully over the weekend I will finish up and post some pics.

Don't give up on the P-40B yet, Joe! I'm still filling and sanding on the AMtech P-40E and I've been at it for nearly a week Angry [:(!].

But it will end and priming and painting will come next. We have to hope! Black Eye [B)]
