Thanks guy, I've neglected this GB too long and I am now ready to get back into the thick of it. And updating the web page was the first thing that needed to happen.

No there is no 'official' end date to this shindig... I at least had the forethought to keep it open-ended because I knew that I'd lose momentum. So feel free to build another!

Here's some quick pics of my P-40N fresh out of the paint shop. It's painted entirely with Gunze acrylics. The green marks on the side were on the real aircraft. When it was delivered to the RAAF, it must have had US insignias on it, so they were painted out with local paint colours. The OD is a bit darker than usual, but I tried to match it to colour of the actual aircraft which looks very dark in photos. Might give it a coat of future once it's dried for a bit longer. Hope you like it so far:

BTW, here's a picture of the aircraft I'm building. Thought you might be interested:

Good looking build so far Daniel. I've always liked the P-40 in RAAF schemes. Have to do one someday.

Daniel,

Nicely done so far, I'd be interested to see the model when decals are applied. Your building A29-629 [BU-B] of W.Cdr. G. Atherton, or Cleopatra III. don't forget the two whip antenias that this bird had mounted on the rear fuselage section.

Which decal set are you using ?

AeroMaster sheet 48-150c show this bird as Foliage Green [Medium Green 42] over Neutral Grey, with a Black / White spinner - this is wrong.

Red Roo decal sheet RRD 4808, show the bird as Olive Drad over Neutral Grey, with a Red / White spinner - this set is more accurate for A29-629.

Thanks Rob,

I've done plenty of rsearch on Cleopatra III so far mate. I'm using the Red Roo decal set, didn't know Aeromaster did a set for Cleopatra III. Olive drab over neutral grey seemed a more realistic option to me, if they were going to re-paint the thing foliage green on delivery, why paint out the US insignias with another colour? I was going to do this one as "Black magic" of 78 sqn RAAF, but the windshield was wrong for that particular aircraft. I'll be doing the Mauve kit as that one.

I've got a few of the decals on so far, so I'll hopefully post a pic or two tomorrow.

Is it too late to get in on this? I've got a Hasegawa P-40N in 1/72nd scale that I'm working on right now.

Okay try number two...I feel a bit shy after seeing all of the great work, finished and in progress. Revell O Gram P40B/C

Any way this is my first attempt at making my own seatbelts. I also did some scratch work by trying to correct the seat frame. The fuselage is now joined and the work on seam removal/gap filling has started...

Arki, Rick, Daniel and Jerry

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. Since posting I added more buckles and closed up the fuselage. I was going to try and freehand a stock piece of styrene to close in the pit, but I have no contour guage and did not want to push it too far...

I went to my LHS at the weekend after the kids rugby match (Proud Coach moment, they won to close out thier season with only one loss from 5 matches!) to pick up some paint for this bird. They only had enamels, I needed the mid-stone and azure. I have the Dark Earth in acryllic. Will this cause problems during painting or afterwards?

Pingtang: beautiful looking "N"
JoeRugby: nice interior work!

A question for those of you who have put together the 1/48 Trumpeter "B": How was the fit for you? I have had to use volumes of putty and Mr. S products so far, especially around the front end. I guess a positive is that afer all that sanding I've realized that the rivets look a little more "to scale" after a few strokes of the sanding stick.

Hopefully I'll have some pics later this week. The body is in the process of being prepped for paint.

...which leads me to my final question (for now):
For an AVG "B" version (R.T, Smith #77), I went with the FS#'s suggested on the decals documentation. THe light grey is not an issue but for Dark Earth I've ended up with Polyscale 505218 (which is called Olive Drab) and for Dark Green I have 505246. I ordered these blindly on-line, and am wondering if this wasn't a mistake.

Aren't I supposed to use ANA-617 for the Dark Earth?

Does anyone know the correct colors for this? I use acrylics where possible.

Thanks, guys

Joe, shouldn't be a problem, I'd spray the enamel Midstone first & let it cure for a couple of days, then spray the Acrylic Dark Earth.

Mucker

Can't help you out on the numbers much, but Olive Drab is fairly different in color to Dark Earth, i.e. green vs. brown. Gut instinct says something might be amiss in your selection.

Cool...

Your plan works out well, the dark earth would be the last color I spray and it is the acryllic...

mucker Thanks for the kind words. When I built the Trumpeter 1/48 P-40B, I don't remember having alot of fit problems. The front end was a bit tricky though and I did have a few problems there, but nothing that needed alot of putty. The lower rear fuselage needed a bit of work too. Apart from that, it was pretty good.

Daniel [aka pingtang],

'Black Magic' would be a good choice of P 40, but you said the windshield was incorect for the decal sheet, was Red Roo Decals [RRD 4809] the sheet you had in mind ?. The serials should be A29-575 and the code should be HU-E.

The info on the decal sheet [RRD 4809] is incorrect, the windshield is the same as the series your doing as Cleopatra III. 'Black Magic' had 2 pilots, it's original [and the pilot who named it] is Flt.Lt. Denis Baker who was OC A Flight of 78 Sqn, [hence the two tone spinner cap]. This was the mount of Flt.Lt. Baker untill transfered baack to Australia in early January '45

W.O. Len Waters was transfered to 78 Sqn in January '45 and was assigned this aircraft from 20 January and for the remainder of the war flew many an opperational sortie, untill 6th August '45 as by this time it was showing it's age and very war weary.

I hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the info Rob,

I've got the Red-roo set. I bought it a while ago, and have since found that it is in-accurate. I've got some spare A numbers, and it's not too hard to turn a L into an E. I've got the latest 'flightpath' magazine which has alot of info in it. As for the windsheild, I thought I had the wrong type. It's the last time I trust a Red-Roo decal sheet.......

I think it should make a pretty interesting model. With the white tail, wing leading edges, prop spinner and natural metal canopy framing. The mauve kit should do nicely.

Daniel,

Only too glad to help, as the P 40 M/N was one that we had to build for the RAAF as part of our contract, I have a contact within the RAAF's Public Relations section, who was able to supply me with original RAAF wartime photo's of the P 40's from the 'E' that Truscott flew at Milne Bay, John Gorton's P 40 k.

And it is a pity that RED ROO Decals are inaccurate for the P 40N of Len Waters.

On another note, with the Mauve kit [as I built the M version as Wilfred Arthur's mount the rear cockpit fillet and clear part, if you glue this part into the fusselage section and secure with tape, this will reduce the filler required on the wing seams as it fans the fuselage section at the wingroot.

Thanks for the tip, might give it a go. I don't know if I'll start my build just yet, I might see if I can get a resin detail set for the cockpit first. I'm looking at a true details set at the moment.

I thought this plane was flown (and named) by John Blackmore? Are my references wrong?
