AIRCRAFT - On The Warpath: The Curtiss P-40

I've got a question regarding Tex Hill's AVG plane. Almost everyone that does his plane does the #48 B model with the tan/green camo or #108 E model with the All olive drab top camo. As I understand it, #48 crashed before it saw any action, and he didn't get 108 until sometime 6 months later. So what airplane did he fly in between? Or do I have my facts wrong? I'm asking cause I have a B, and 2 E's that I would like to turn into all the planes he flew while with the AVG.

I'd like to join in on this GB, I have the Eduard P 40n that can be done as an RAAF bird.

I have 5 x Wartime RAAF pix of the P 40n, if you would like them, just send an email to me and I send them back.

If it's got the name SMER on it, I advise you to run screaming in any direction which will carry you away... far, far away.

The MPM 1/72 P-40 is a pretty nice kit unless you're a beginner. It's not an easy build. Sorry on the Smer kit, I'm not familiar with that one.

I was looking through the Brett Green book "Modeling the P-40.....etc.etc." and noticed that MPM makes a P-40 F/L and SMER makes a "K." Does anyone have any experience with either of these kits? Are they worth baggin'?

BTW, they are both 72nd.

drat. blackwolf, that patch is just so dratted AMAZING and OUTSTANDING that I want to join just to have it in my sig. But I can't. No kit, no money and too many other GB's.

Steve, may I please join this one too? I have a revellogram P-40B T\that I would like to do for this. But, be forewarned, I haven't got a digital camera, so pics will be slow coming. At the moment I have about 60+ rolls of film to be developed, plus three or four albums to be scanned and the pics put in my photobucket album. I'll see what I have in the way of P-40s and get them posted here.

You should volunteer to use the Museum of Science and Industries new time machine and go back to Dec 7 and take a series of pictures of Lts Taylor & Welch's machines for all of us to use.

Count me in too, Steve. I'll probably be doing either a P-40E or N from the 49th FG, or an AVG bird. The decision depends on when the group build starts or (more likely) when I'm able to finish something. I have a couple P-40s in the works now but, because of work and family, my builds progress at a painfully slow pace! Sorry I can't be more specific now, but I'd hate to promise something and not deliver.

Waikong, unfortunately I don't have many photos of Curtiss from my Grandfather. There's one photo of he and his crew when he was working on the C-46, but that's it. It's a long story but due to the ignorance and greed of the 'other' side of that side of the family, I have very little to remember my Grandfather by.

Bobbaily, I don't see a problem with using one model for multiple group builds and you're more than welcome to join us!

And it looks like you've been having fun with the new camera. Those are some really nice shots. I intend to have a section on the site for warbirds and museum birds and would like to use those, although I'd like to work from the original raw images, if I may. I suppose we can work out the licensing fees...

Justen, well I'm not lucky, really. I'm just ruthless relentless in my quest to acquire as many images as I can! Especially when it comes to the P-40. I only wish that I had more original photos...

Hey Steve, can I play with you guys? Seeing how I have been relieved of my guyz duties I have some time on my hands and I would really like to build something. Is there a reason no one has mentioned building the Trumpeter 1/48th B model?

I like the new site, P-40's are cool. I have a couple of pics of the P-40N at the Museum of Aviation up on planepictures. It is in the markings of Robert Scott, not that you can really tell because of the way they have it cramed in there. I really like you new P-40 site. The P-40 I am planning to do for the GB has decals for Charles Older's #68 from the 3rd Pursuit Squadron.

Would like to get in on this GB-currently have an Acad. P-40C that is 'committed' to the Pacific GB, although I won't get started for at least another month. Is it acceptable to build one plane for two GB's?

Okay, I think we're up to date on the duty roster.

I think I mentioned earlier that I was going to whip up a 'Foto Forum' for the P-40, similar to the ETO Club forum. Well, I opted to give website construction another go...

I've decided to do something that I've wanted to do for a very long time and put up a site devoted to the P-40, and to my Grandfather who worked at Curtiss Wright here in Buffalo. Although it's only a few days old and by no means complete in any sense of the word, this is the result:

I've only a relative few pages up at the moment, but it will grow. This is only a free site at the moment and I'm limited to some degree, but I've got enough material on the P-40 and on Curtiss-Wright to put all other similar sites to shame and I'm not ashamed to say that this is my intention.

As I mentioned, this is a free site and, as such, it will eventually have an advert banner and pop-ups after an initial period. Hopefully most of you have pop-up killers, but for those who don't... my apologies...

I'm going to have a modeling section on the site and all the builds form this GB will be displayed there.

I'll also try and get a firm date nailed down for the start of this GB soonly...

Hey, a P-40 build! I would love to join, I have a Revell P-40B, a AMtech p-40, and an old Arii P-40. Gonna do at least one of them as AVG's Tex Hill's #48. I have a resin cockipt kit and some Superscale decals, so maybe I'll do another AVG mount too.

If the controls weren't locked on the ground, then the control surfaces would often times be deflected, with the elevators both going in the same direction.

But each aileron will go in the opposite direction of the other. This is what enables the pilot to roll the aircraft in flight; whichever way the aircraft is rolled, one aileron will drop, providing more lift to that wing, and the other will rise, depriving that wing of lift, and a roll is the result. Given enough speed, that is.

Thanks for the "looks good so far" Fightnjoe, but you have to see it close up to realize the mistakes. I wish I had known about your warning before I put the wing together the first time. Your P40 looks great BTW, nice work with the control surfaces.

i-beam be careful with the wing attachment. the gap is horrible. the only way i have found to avoid this is to dry fit then attach the upper part. it does look good so far.

Greetings fellow P40 fans! Even though I'm mostly an armor modeler, the P40 is definitely my favorite WWII fighter (I don't even know where the mustang ranch is [:0], runs for cover). Is there any chance you could allow me in with my Revell/monogram P40B WIP? Maybe you can add me as a restoration member? This thing has been in my pile of half-builts for a long time and has no chance of getting finished without some motivation. I've messed it up pretty bad and it is practically full rebuild for me. All seams need fixed, the right wing half is glued on ascew, some parts have been oversanded, etc ... Please help save my P40.

Weren't control surfaces often left "down" on the ground? Can't remember where I read that ... and I also not a pilot, so may be WAYYYY wrong

steve thanks. still learning how all this works. much appreciate the comments though. the decal sheet mfg escapes me. cant remember what company. got it through squadron. got to organize the blasted desk so i can find what i want. the revell makes a decent bird. this one has a scratchbuilt pit and gear. plan on even more with the next one.

You just love that 'ole Monogram kit, 'eh? Well, it's still among the most accurate early P-40 kits out there. I see you've finished it as Boyington's AVG Hawk; which decals did you use?

Also, I see that you cut out the control surfaces and that always lends a bit more realism. I have to point something out, however, and please don't take this as a rag... but if you have one aileron deflected downward, then the other should be deflected upward.
