The Boly is coming along nicely, I got the first coat of yellow on it and I will need to put at least one more on as you can see the white putty underneath.  I got a lot of the fiddly bits ready to go too. Pics to come soon.Smile [:)]

I also highly doubt I'll be finished before the end of January so I am giving this a further deadline extension - when ever we finish! I know there is myself, Dave, Marc, Jules,  Anthony and qtaylor still doing this build.  Have at her boys!Big Smile [:D]

Been right busy last week, Transport Canada has kept me on my toes with my A330 manual, had a hardwood floor installed in the living room as my cat was using the carpet as an alternate litter boxDisapprove [V]Dave I feel your pain.  I took the beast to the vets 400$ later he's got a hyperthyroid so now he's on meds and it should stop him from taking a wiz everyware plus there is no more carpet to assault.

I did get some work done, tried to remove the ridges and bleed spots with not much success (it looks like crap) I'll probably have to start the paint process all over againBanged Head [banghead].  I hope you guys are having better success with your builds.

Great Anthony, looking forward to some finished pics of your Arrow!  Thumbs Up [tup]

A little more progress on my Boly, I am now completely finished scribing and am ready for the first coat of Trainer yellow.  If the temperature outside is good tomorrow (above 0), I'll get it on, if not I'll have to wait till Monday.  I paint in my garage you see so the colder it gets outside, the worse the paint is to work with.

If I was lazy and chose not to rescribe the boly, I thinkI'd be pretty close to being finished by now.  The new panel lines look so much better so all the effort will be worth it in the end!Smile [:)]

There are other alternatives to guns you know; hammers, knives, axes, swords, farm machinery, dynamite...Evil [}:)]Wink [;)]Laugh [(-D]

Anyway, hope everything all works out (with the cat AND the Sunderland).  About the deadline.  I may be able to squeak in under it but if not, I'm just going to keep posting until I finish. (may mean the BoA may be delayed a litte as I've already delayed the BoG.  I'm sure this page won't be lost come Feb1 so you can keep posting and building Dave.  I am looking forward to seeing the final outcome!  Just... don't... give... up man!

A little more progress, I have the underside and the elevators completely scribed, now for the top of the wings.  I should have a coat of paint on by the weekend!Tongue [:P]

I for one enjoy scribing too Jay, it just looks so much better after your done especially if the raised lines are poorly done.  I have an old monogram Ar 234 I'm picking away at and the difference is amazing..

Progress report, spent a few hours on it last weekend but I am still a ways off from closing it up.  I have to make a trip down to Kelowna tomorrow to pick up my parents from the airport.  The good news is I can pick up the paints I need while I'm down there, the bad news is my parents will be here for a week and I don't expect to get much build time in.

Off topic:  Our cat got an infection above his eye so my wife had to take him in to the vet.   Not only was the vet bill outrageous but we discovered that the fat tubby is also diabetic and we have to give him insulin shots twice a day now.  Dang gun control laws, could've taken care of the problem myself !!!!!Disapprove [V]Wink [;)]  Do you think the Conservatives will get rid of them - the gun control laws that is?

Very productive, just not much on the Boly.  My wife and I just bought our first major baby purchase, we now a have a crib!, half  price to boot!  Thumbs Up [tup]

I did get the scribing of the starboard wing underside done this morning (whew- 3 more to go then paint!).  Man are there a lot of panel lines under there.  I am using the Squadron/Signal book as a template, I found a magazine with some nice line drawings of the boly but I liked the lines in the Squadron/Signal book better. The top sides should go a lot quciker, there are about half as many lines. go figure...

Who was it that said they enjoy scribing!?  I think I have to agree!  It makes for a good sense of accomplishment, especially after a whole lot of line scribing!Smile [:)]

Instead of doing the wing seperate I did it all together after they were attached to the fueslage.

Yeah Jay the wings will be joined to the fueselage first i'll just paint them and the rear ones before the fueselage, that way i can hold it by the wings when i'm turning it around while painting the fues, that way i can make sure the A/B is hitting the surface dead on, I know it sounds overly complicated but i just don't like doing all the camo in one hit, it scares me, must be one of those "Kremp" thingsThumbs Up [tup]

All the best to your mother on her Birthday Marc!

Jules that looks close to what I did for my hurricane.  I blew up some camo plans to 1:48 then cut them out and used double sided tape.  I had to stick it to my hand to remove some of the stickyness or I would have peeled up some of the brown paint.  The double sided tape has no bleed either.  Instead of doing the wing seperate I did it all together after they were attached to the fueslage.

Okay now I'm ready to start scribing, all sanded and it looks alright.  The temp is supposed be warm next week so I hope I can get the scribing done in time for painting next week.

So Jules, if you've only recently built models for the past 2 years, what did you do before (during the inbetween time)?

Jay It wasn't until i got my Badger 175 for Xmas 2003 that i started working on models again and it wasn't until i joined FSM that i finished my first, previous to that i hadn't touched a model for 5 years mainly because of the whole Wife having the kids thing and buying our first house that needed renovating badly...I used to make them before that useing a Paasche VLS but i never really finished anything properly....If it wasn't for this site and all the group builds that i partake in i probably wouldn't get anything finished......

Bear my normal method for cutting masks lets say for a Spitfire is to use tamiya 40mm tape, they say a picture is worth a 1000 words so here is how i do it...

40mm gives you a fair bit of tape to play with but it's not wide enough to cover the entire sections of ocean grey( which i paint on first ) so filling in the middle with Tamiya 10mm is what i normally do, i try to keep the masks cut reasonably thin to avoid pulling off the base colour but with a coat of future that is very unlikely to happen owing to the low tack nature of Tamiya tape.....Also to avoid having masks all over my model i paint the wings in one session and the fueselage in another....

When i get further along with this MK V Spit i'll post up plenty of pics on how i do my camo jobs, it's pretty complicated and time consuming but i've never had any bleed through or any of the base colour pull off with the tape and this will be my 3rd Spitfire....

Of course you can always buy Eduard masks and not worry about having to cut anything, I have a set of Eduard Spitfire camo masks here but decided to stash them for another MK V build because this particular Spitfire has at least 40% of it's camo scheme covered in invasion stripes and it seems like a waste to use them.....

OH Jay no mate this one doesn't have the clipped wings but my MK VIII for the next Aussie Gb has them......

Well, I'm getting there, the cp and nose is completely finished (painted) and I just have the starboard wing root to sand.Big Smile [:D]  Then on to scribing.  If it goes well, I may be able to get the first coat of "trainer yellow" on next week.Cool [8D]

Hot Dog! I may just be able to finish by the end of Jan.  If not I'll just keep extending the deadline (this is my GB so I can do that!Wink [;)])

Jules, I wanna see some pics!  Is it the Spitfire MkV with the clipped wings?

Thanks for the feedback and tips guy's it's realy appreciated.

Jay I'm using Tamiya can's for the dk earth & dk green.  Now i'm going to have fun smoothing out the ridges and touch ups without screwing things up.

Dave I like your idea of the future it reminded me of a technique a house painter showed me of starting with a small amount of paint on the tape and gently pull away from the tape.  That small amount of paint usualy sealed the tape and prevented bleeding.  I'll probably try both and see what works.

Jules I've never used Tamiya tape does it work well i.e. easy to trim...  I find some tapes are a real pain when you trim them they leave jagged edges and bits hanging about.

Cheers

Not at all Jay I only wish that i had a few of my older models left to compare to my new ones, I only have 10 finished kits in my stash and all of them are no older than 2 years.......

But the 10 that i have will soon be joined by a new Spitfire MK V cause i've managed to get all the PE into the pit and tonight i'll fire up the A/B and paint on the interior green, the plan is to have the fues halves and wings joined by Friday which will leave me the weekend to make the seams go away which is not really a big job considering the excellent fit of thr tamiya kit......

Bear I've never used painters tape before only Tamiya tape which i've never had a problem with but Daves idea of going over it with future should work like a charmThumbs Up [tup]

BTW i remember an article in FSM magazine where one dude used silly putty to mask a 3 colour camo scheme on a piece of armour and it seemed to work very well....

Jules you  did very well on guessing the builds on the shelf.Laugh [(-D]  You missed three.

On the top shelf from left to right is an old 1:48 P-40B in AVG markings.  An old 1:72 Sabre in RCAF colours, the little one you thought was a Fokker DVII is actually an old 1:72 Spad XIII. Then yes you are right an old 1:72 Ju188 (I had to fix it up when I pulled it out of it's box - it was missing the port landing gear and both wheels) and then the 1:72 Beaufighter TF.X from this Canadian GB. Yeah!! [yeah]

On the bottom  (LtoR) is my 1:48 A6M2b Zero from the PH GB, then the one with two blades is the 1:48 Ki-43I Hayabusa I just finished before Christmas for the Japanese AC GB. Then the one you thought was a Spitfire is actually it's arch enemy an old 1:48 BF-109G!Disapprove [V]  (I know the picture wasn't great so I'll let it slideWhistling [:-^]). Then my 1:48 Hurricane from the BoB GB and then lastly my 1:48 Typhoon I also finished during the BoB GB last year.  And yes the big black one on the desk is a P-61 Blackwidow but was so trashed from being boxed up for a long time that it is my new paint hulk!

I have another shelf with four other old models on it (1:48 Hellcat, Avenger, P-51B and partially finished Devastator-missing decals and rear gunner).  When I say old I mean I built them between the ages of 10 and 18 (ei: 12 or more years ago! and not very good).  I also have 10 or so packed away in boxes (Mig31, CF-18, F-14, one of the first stealth fighter models, a Mil-24 Hind Helicopter, a Huey UH-1H, and another crappy P-51D where I ripped off the landing gear, just to name a few).

At one point I also remember I had about 20 other models but between selling them at a garage sale, giving them to friends and fire crackers/pellet guns, they are gone.  I had an F-105 (built in one day!), CF-104, CF-101 Voodoo, P-47D, P-38, Spitfire, Ju-87 Stuka and USS New Jersey are some I remember with fondness... ahh the good ol' days...  sniffff...Sad [:(]

As for running out of room, as I build more "new" models, I'll be putting away the worst of my older ones into storage. So I think I have enought space for about 10 more new builds.

Sorry for rambling on like this, I hope I didn't bore you.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Bear, couple of possible solutions when using tape.  If you are hand brushing or even air brushing I've heard some guys say that they put a coat of future over it to seal the tape before painting.  The theory is that if the clear bleeds you still won't see it because its clear.  When painting with tape and air brushing I always put another layer of tape underneath just back of the exposed edge where I want the paint line to be so that the tape is raised from the surface.  Thus the paint is not in contact with the tape and will not be sucked under and will not leave a ridge.  Also, by raising the tape higher or lower with more layers of tape you can make the paint line harder or softer.  Hope this helps.

Marc, I've used the green painter masking tape and I've had a little bit of bleeding under too, are you brush painting or airbrushing?  I've seen others use the blue tac and it looks really good. I imagine silly putty would be almost the same.

For my Spitfire build for the Aces GB, I want to try the blue tac method.

Thanks for the comments guys.  The other models on the top shelf are my old old ones from when I was 12-14.  I just couldn't have an empty shelf could I?Wink [;)]

Jules I used green painters tape to mask.  I'm figuring the ridging is my fault, my movement was to slow and to much paint was applied in one shot.

Blu Tac sounds good to, I just happen to have silly putty in the house and I'd read somewhere that it could be used to mask so I thought I'd give it a try.

Bear I've used Blu Tac rolled into like a sausage very succesfully on my Hellcat build that i did early in 2005 but you get kind of a semi hard/semi soft edged paint demarcation line which was perfect for the hellcat.....

BTW what tape did you have the trouble withQuestion [?]

Jay Nice progress on the bolingbrook, you did a good job on the cockpitThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup], I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.  I love the strategic placement of the beer fridge, looks like you're going to need another set of shelfs soon.

Progress report during the hollidays I started painting.  The DK Earth went on no problem, masked and put on the DK Green when I pulled the tape off  and some of the green had bled under the tape and caused some ridgesAngry [:(!] (I hate painting).  Now the fun part trying to clean it up with out killing it. You gotta love the roller coster ride of model building.  Next time I think  I'm going to try silly putty to mask instead of tape any feed back on using silly putty or other alternatives would be appreciated.

The violin ornament is a neat battery operated magnetic musical thing.  you can either press a button and it plays one of 6 different classical tunes (like ode to joy or greensleaves) or you take the bow and strum (tapping really) the strings (metal bow on metal wire strings, making a circut) which then plays the notes in succession of the classical song it is set for.  really neat! Laugh [(-D]

about the beer, I had just emptied the case and put the bottles into the fridge for maximum refreshing temperature!

Oh... one more thing, what's a Violin ornament doing on a beer fridge???  I mean, violins are cool and all that (my wife is a violinist) but seems outa place next to a picture of a Aircraft Carrier..
