Hey all,

I've been working hard over the past few days building and rebuilding my 6 Doras. I don't have access to my digicam right now, but will post pics tomorrow or so. Right now, work is focusing on my new Big-Tail bird that will eventually be "Yellow 6". Tail is grafted on, RLM "84" painted on the sides and the underside is 84/76. Brake lines are done and the engine plug has been doctored from an old Ta-152 kit that I had lying around.

My other Trimaster kit, "Blue 2" from JG3 is just about finished. It, along with Brown 4 (another Ta tailed bird) Black >> and Black <|| both from JG6 have gotten rebuilt after coming out of 4 years storage. Its amazing what a drill, styrene rod and some tenax can do with broken main gear!

Black <|| is going to be repainted as Red 1 from JV44. The rest'll pretty much be repaired and put on bases for display.

For the bottom NMF I used MM Aluminium plate and then accented some of the panels and lines with stainless steel, looking at it now I should have sprayed the steel first but it looks good the way it is too.

As for the antenna, this was my first attempt at one so I used a length of copper wire out of a wire that came from the control line for one of my son's toy helicopters, the kind that sits on the floor and moves around like a RC car. I think that this antenna is only a temp one and I might take the time to add all the isolators, etc. that i have seen on an outstanding Dora over at clubhyper.

The tires are done that way because I remember seeing an article about 'Gelb 10" where it talked about it having the same mismatched tires. Of course the restored bird has both of the treadless ones on it now, so perhaps it is just a way to add a bit of interest to the kit, or as we like to call it "artistic license"Big Smile [:D]

And thank you for the great shots of the flaps. They are copied into my research file for the 1/24 Trumpeter kit to start Dec 1. It a good thing Verlinden made cockpit set or there wouldn't be any AM stuff for that. I have decided to do the same thing to that build as i did for this one... big tail conversion and markings... all the same. Oh and the pics of the tail will come in very handy as well.

Every time I think that I'll have the time to sit down and work on it, real life gets in the way. It has been a bit crazy at work lately and then add to that my soccer team and it adds up to 0 time to finish any of the models that I have going. Oh well, I was able to get some done last night and am going to try to fit in some more today!!!

Still plugging away at all the tiny finishing bits to get my "Black 6" done. Should have it done in about three of Four hours more of work, but I cannot predict when that will be calendar time!!!!

Sorry but no idea the difference between those kits.

As far as PE stuff. Good sharp blade for cutting. For folding I use a steel rule to hold a piece down, if it has a long fold to make, and fold withe a utilty knife blade. Otherwise I use broad tipped tweezers to hold the piece at the fold line. This brings me to tweezers. I use 2... a broad flat set and a pointy one for only the teeny weenie parts. Optivisor is very useful, especially at my age, to see what you are doing. Gap filling CA glue that will give you a little working time then CA accelerator to get the glue to set in an instant when ready.

This brings me to a tool that I can not do PE without. I actually use this all the time now when using CA glue, not just for PE



This is a sewing needle with the end of the eye ground off making a tiny little fork. Mounted in a wood dowel, or in this case, the end of an artist brush handle. It is used to pick up a tiny drop of CA accelerator from a small jar. When gluing the really small pieces that blast of accelerator form the pump bottle is a waste and gets all over the place.
After cutting the PE from the fret and getting cleaned up and ready to glue… hold it with tweezers and just touch it to a drop of CA on a piece of scrap or apply a tiny drop of glue with a toothpick. Hold it in place where it is to be glued and just touch with the accelerator tool.

ok-- i've never used PE before(except air-filters on a Pz III G) -- any special tools/glue i would need? also , ive seen a 'FW 190 D' and a 'FW190 D9' kit from Eduard-- $3 diff in price, is there a diff in these 2 kits?

Dog - The Eduard detail set is a must have in my opinion. It is truly a thing of beauty, fairly easy to construst and add and really adds to the maodel I think. I also added Ultra Cast exahusts butthe kits pipes can be drilled out since they are decent.

wow -- lots of Great Models AM items -- my wife might think Dora is another woman! I've been strictly OOB, but would't mind stepping up my game a bit-- can someone suggest the 'must-have' corrections/enhancements for the Tamiya D-9?
I just finished the Tamiya FW190A3, so I can recognize that the smaller wheels make a difference.
I'm looking at the Eagle parts D-9 update kit & also cowl resin correction, among other things.
I've been at this long enough to know its 'in the eye of the beholder' , but want to see what suggestions this GB might have.

Whatever inaccuracies that are in the kit are still there. Reviews of the D-9's that are available. I did not set out to correct each thing that the kit manufacturer got wrong. I picked the Tamiya kit simply because I had the PE details for that kit. I liked this particular aircraft since it was a relatively unique configuration with an interesting paint scheme. There were only a few aircraft designated as a D-9 with the wood tail before they changed the engine that lengthened the nose of the airframe. So the tail was the only “configuration” change I made. The rest, scratched or PE detail, was simply to improve the scale appearance of the parts over what the kit makers was able to accomplish.

You are correct, this is a Dora only GB, but since it is open ended I am sure that there is no reason why you cannot join.

I cannot tell you which 1/48 scale kit is the best, although I have heard great things about both the Trimaster and Tamiya kits. I prefer to build WWII mostly in 1/32 so can tell you that the new Hasegawa kit is pretty sharp, but a better bang for your buck is to get the Revell Germany kit (since it is the same as the Hasa kit). You will find plenty of good info on this thread so best of luck!!!!

Hi Jean and welcome back to the insanity. I recently completed the Tamiya JV44 kit for this GB and was very pleased with how well it went together. I have heard lots of good thing about the Trimaster kit as well. There is an after market big tail conversion available. You can see completed and progress pics of my Dora at the link below. I did a big tail conversion which was not as hard as it sounds. I also used an Eduard PE detail set and cockpit.

If you go through this thread there is some good info regarding the Dora and kits etc.

Hi,

I'm back to modelling after 20 years because I fell in love with the Dora.
I'd like to know which 1/48 model is best.

I was thinking Tamiya but I read quite often that there's some problems.
What about the Italeri version?
Also is there a 1/48 with the big tail?
