Still waiting to buy my model/s for this GB but definitely am in, in, in. The local model show is early September so I am looking to pick up a few bargins then. Please don't think I have forgotten and will let you know as soon as ready. You still have the 18 month timeframe right? Regards
Simon.

Frosty, looking great as always. You never cease to amaze me.

Kaz, I have a question. Since this Group Build does not specify WWI biplanes, would it be okay for me to join this Group Build with this:

If it is okay, I can get started on this in a day or so.

And if that is acceptable, I also have an Italian CR42 Falco as well as a Fairey Swordfish to do after the Seagull.

Looking forward to your reply.

doing research on each project...
thanx 4 posting the link, maybe it would b good 2 edit the linx
in2 the first post also, just 2 keep it all in 1 place ?

here's a couple of pix of the dvi so far:

detail parts mostly painted on the sprues, basecoat on fuse & wings,
cockpit assembly begun, ailerons scored & one is already separated
from the top wing, elevators scored 4 repositioning...

FrostyGirl, thanks for the tips Big Smile [:D]
I'm going to get onto them straight away.
You are very knowledgeable about your a/c, and I will take any advice you offer for my builds.
I have never considered writing my construction notes on the instructions, although I do write paint schemes and alternatives to advised paint manufacturer colours on these sheets. In future I will be writing all my notes on the instruction sheets!!! Good one Frosty Thumbs Up [tup]
I tried stripping an old cd-rom power cable last night to produce rigging, but found that the wire was too fine, and too stiff. (Not to mention I almost couldn't see it.) I simply could not work with the material. I will venture to the hardware store later today (if my back is better) for some fuse wire, and some stocks for building diorama bases. (I've seen some excellent based models on the internet in the last few days)

Here is another cool link I found yesterday.

I will use a production line process to build the 5 DRI's that I intend on building, but paint jobs will be done seperately. (One step at a time, ... I have to get the kits FIRST!)
I suppose that I will have to post pics of my production line when it is in full swing...
I still have Windows gremlins, (I might get them to build my models since they are so industrious!), so no pics yet, but soon...

Kaz:
i usually write construction notes rite on the instruction sheets as i'm building
& i keep the sheets so that if i build the same kit again, i can remember any
little trix, tips or problem areas.
when it's time 2 paint, prime all of them at the same time, then do the final
paint schemes individually... just like they did w/ the real ones !
it's funny, but i had the same idea of building a Jasta after i finished my Dr.I
... i mite just have 2 join u... we will b a regular fokker factory then !
& u will have 2 try & rig at least 1! Big Smile [:D]

fellow builders:
welcome 2 u all !
looking forward 2 building w/ u...

a small suggestion re: builder's list...
u mite want 2 incorporate this into ur 1st post w/ an edit.
that way the initial post will have a description of the build's parameters,
start & end dates & a list of participants (which can b updated as necessary)
all in 1 place 4 reference purposes.
good luck w/ ur gremlins....Big Smile [:D]

I've seen pictures of the DVI, but have not seen a kit in my LHS yet.

I am looking forward to seeing what Simon U has to offer. I'm sure that we will soon get some different a/c on our Build List that we haven't already seen, and some more modelers interested.

Kaz

recipe for "Jasta in 6 months" :
get 6 kits (same manufacturer helps, but is not essential...)
build all 6 at the same time, assembly-line fashion...
same operations on all 6 kits at the same time.
if u can build a 1/72 Dr.I in a month, u will probably get all 6 done
within 3 months, LOL !
(it can b done... most of my Dr.I was built within 24 hours 4 the
"Mad Fokker Day" build last year, i only added the rigging & decals
after the fact... but that eduard kit is exceptional fit-wise.)

Since this Build seems to be broadened to include Bi-planes from WWI and later, I have two Fairy Swordfishes and an Italian CR42 that I just might styart for this build. Don't put me down as definite yet, I still have a heat wave to get through, and a bunch of new kits to wade through. I'll see how things go in a month or so.

Kaz, just a heads-up on that Fairy Swordfish when you decide to start it. I have it on good authority from a member of my IPMS club that this one is the most inaccurate of the three 1/72 scale kits out there. It will still build into a good model that is a fairly good respresentation of a Swordfish, so if accuracy is low on your list of necessities in a kit, then this shouldn't matter. In addition, the fit is atrocious at times and the detail is pretty soft in areas. You will have a bit of a fight on your hands, but in the end, it will look pretty darn good. It just takes some patience and some elbow grease. I think that you will still enjoy building it.

THANKS!!! This is the sort of info that I am always after.
(I am the slap-together'er LOL)
Accuracy is an issue for me, and with the information you have just provided, I am keen to build this kit, even if just for the experience of what a 'bad' kit is! (I think I have come across a couple now)

I have some Windows problems and am unable to upload pics at the moment, but will do so as soon as possible.

Hi there all Big Smile [:D]

bstrump glad you decided to add that Felixstowe!
I couldn't care if this was your first, or hundred and first!
We all have to start somewhere, and nowhere is as good a place as any to start from. LOL
(Note to self, post a pic of my first model sometime!!!)

Rob Gronovius I am as happy as larry to see a DRI being built for this Group Build. I would very much like the kit you have to build myself. I look forward to seeing your DRI as welll as your Spad XIII. I have one of each at the moment, and as said before, hope to build a staffelt of DRI's some time soon. The great question I have looming over my head is, 'do I stay with the same manufacturer as my last build?'

FrostyGirl That is one great DRI Thumbs Up [tup]
I wish that I was able to make mine as lifelike as you are able to.
Every time I consider adding wiring etc, my little heart skips a beat...

I have almost completed my first Roden kit, and am suprised of some of the details in the kit. Flash was not as much as an issue as poorly fitting parts.

I am very tempted to look further into Eduard kits.

Well the next is an ol' faithful manufacturer, Airfix. B/f got me a Fairey Swordfish while at the LHS this week, so it is on my immediate 'to-do' list. I think I may scratch-build some floats to make it a sea version. Lets see Big Smile [:D]

Keep up your work. Hope to see some progress shots soon. As for me, have almost finished the Albatros. Still trying to get them photos to upload... Censored [censored] computer Censored [censored]

Major G.:
the Eduard Dr.I is a great kit, the version u have comes w/ p/e, extra decals
& vinyl masks 4 the wheels, rudder & cowling... the green finish is the factory standard 4
the Dr.I & DVii, streaked on w/ a 3" brush over either the clear doped linen fabric
or a light blue paint....
here's a pic of the one i built 4 Mad Fokker Day:

this is the 2nd Dr.I (493/17) flown by Kempf, the paint scheme is slightly different
from the one on the box top (213/17, iirc)
the fit of the kit is very good, unlike most eastern bloc kits there r locating pins & they actually line up correctly... & the decals r really quite nice...
if u decide 2 rig it, there r only about 4 wires u really need 2 add on the Dr.I,
apart from control wires 4 the elevators & ailerons.
the SPAD XIII on the other hand has all kinds of bracing wires between the wings,
not 2 mention the control wires...

Rob, I think you will find the Eduard kit a much simpler build than the old Revell Spad XIII....

Sounds good. I also found a very old Spad XIII kit by Revell. I remember buying it at a show for $1. Perhaps that will be the practice kit before I start cutting on the nice Eduard kit.

Hi Rob,

That is a good kit. You will find a lot of info on that if you search a little back on a former GB in this forum called "mad fokker day".

That green are actually green brushed stripes over either light blue or light grey. it was a standard finish for "dreideckers" (triplanes).

It is a nice and easy kit to build!

Best of luck,
Rafael

I believe the only 1/72 scale WW1 plane I have is the Eduard Fokker Dr 1. It looks like the Red Baron triplane but is green with the word KEMPF on the top wing. I haven't built a WW1 plane in several decades. Probably the last time I did one was an old Revell biplane.

For some reason the kit caught my eye at the store, but I haven't been motivated to try building it.

I believe this is the kit I have: http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=EU7016

OK Kaz, put me down as definite with the Felixstowe. I like the time frame; laid back just the way a hobby is supposed to be. BTW, don't expect much in the way of "finer points" as this will be my first ever biplane model. Looking forward to this one.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to Raphael Pelote

I'd never heard of the Martinsyde before, so I am very keen to see this a/c...

Build List
the_nitethyme (Kaz) Roden Albatros DV (not a DVa as previously advised)
Airfix Fokker DRI x5 (?)
bstrump Roden Felixstowe F.2A
wooverstone8 Hansa Brandenburg D.1
Simon U ?
frostygirl Roden Fokker Dvi
Rob Gronovius ?
Raphael Pelote CMR Martinsyde Buzzard

Great to have you all on board.

I have started on my Albatros, and am in construction at the moment. I have painted all my parts pre-construction, and am now adding wing struts and wheel supports, crossbar and wheels. I will have one hell of a touch-up paint job to do, as I have had a lot of carving to do to get the kit parts to sit flush together.
(Paint it all and then have to scrape the paint off... Censored [censored])

I will have some joins to fill, and I think I will take the 'stretched sprue' route!

Photos posted as soon as I can find this 'conveniently sized' camera!

Cheers,

Hey there all Bow [bow]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to bstrump, wooverstone8, Simon U, frostygirl, Rob Gronovius and Duke Maddog.

I am glad that there are others that are as interested in Biplanes and Triplanes as I am.

FrostyGirl, Great to have you on board. Fantastic link btw! I think it is a good suggestion to bookmark this page.
I think you and I both know that you are going to be of assistance in this group build. There are a few people joining now, and I am sure that your experience and knowledge is going to be of benefit to one and all.
So babe, pitch away! LOL Big Smile [:D]

Rob Gronovius, there will be no dinging tolerated (even though I am not sure what 'to ding' is, I gather it is not positive.)
We all respect that we are all of different levels of modeling, experience and talent.
After all, I am very new to all of this! (Nobody should see my Corsair A7D build!!!)[tdn

Duke Maddog, it is good to have you around! We all know that you are a valuable resource to us. I, and others I am sure, hope you join in some time.

What we (possibly) have on board so far:
the_nitethyme (Kaz) Roden Albatros DV (not a DVa as previously advised)
Airfix Fokker DRI x5 (?)
bstrump Roden Felixstowe F.2A
wooverstone8 Hansa Brandenburg D.1
Simon U ?
frostygirl Roden Fokker Dvi
Rob Gronovius ?

I hope that such a group can teach others, such as myself, some of the finer points of modeling biplane and triplane aircraft, and share some of the romance and stories of some of the greatest aircraft and pilots that ever graced our skies.

To our participants, I thank you for your interest, and wish you all the very best with your builds. I know for sure that I am looking forward to seeing these aircraft built.

Here is a website that has a great number of different Biplanes and other unusual aircraft, that I have been perusing lately.

Hi!
I would like to join you on this one!
At this moment I'm trying to finish a Roden Pfalz D.III, but I won't count that one for the GB. Also I'm allready participating on the Vacform GB with a 1/72 Joystick Halberstadt Cl.IV, but for this specific GB I intent to do a CMR Martinsyde Buzzard, which will be finished with the former Aeronáutica Militar (the origin of the PoAF) colours.

However I'll be away for the next 3 weeks on vacation. I'll be taking the kit with me and will take photos all the way. I'll show them as soon as I return.

Regards,
Rafael
