Jules - I wouldn't worry about time too much mate. I reckon you could put an AM Avenger together in a couple of weeks OOB. It's just that I'm adding the Verlinden super-detail set to mine. And, I'm getting about 1 hour a week on it at the moment. The fit of parts is so good even with all that detail packed in.

BTW, I'm just about ready to glue my fuselage halves together now. I'll take some pick before I do it so I can show it off. The tricky parts coming up though. I'll install the resin fire wall and engine soon.......

yeah Jules - I wouldn't worry too much.. there's not THAT much to them.. just more than usual.  And like I said, once you get the cockpit together the rest goes together in no time!!!

Which version of the SBD did ya get?

Ooooo, didn't see this group build.  I think I'd like to hop on board with this one as well.  Either a Devastator or Dauntless in 1/48 scale, just need to decide which kit.

I'm having a tough time deciding.  Anyone have anything to say about either the AM 1/48 Dauntless or Vindicator?  Are they both about the same, or would you recommend one way over the other?

edited: I think I was confusing the Devastator with the Vindicator

I think I solved my own dilema.  From what I can gather, the Vindicators were flown by the Marines at Midway, which appear to have been land based.  I have a couple questions, and I hope some of you Navy experts might be able to clarify some things.  Did the Vindicator see actual carrier use during WWII?  If not, then I'm assuming a Vindicator wouldn't qualify for the GB.  Also, are there any decent Devastator kits out there? (prefer 1/48).  Otherwise I'll have to settle for a Dauntless.

Sorry about that. Some how I didn’t get you down or didn’t get a chance to reply, but Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the Group Build!

espins1:

You can use either aircraft, just as long it’s a carrier aircraft design and it has to have World War II markings. For example, you can do a Corsair in Marine markings; this would work since it was originally a carrier aircraft design. I hope this made sense. If you (or anyone) have any more questions feel free to ask.Smile [:)]

It will be a 1/72 Tamiya F4U-1D.  Yea yea I am picking the popular subject instead...  but then again the aircraft kits I have consist a lil less than 1 percent of the unbuilt kits stash. =P

One question though, what FS color from Model Master enamels do I use to paint a corsair?  I have dark sea blue from Tamiya acrylic and blue angels blue from a Model Master spray can...  and they don't really look right.  And what color is the underside?

Great got you done for an F4U-1DThumbs Up [tup]

Are you using the kit’s decal sheet that is provided, or are you using after market ones? I believe the late Corsairs were overall dark blue.

Kit provided decal set.  Gonna just do it for VF-84.  I just realized they are the same color top n bottom,well... after actually looking at the box again.  Sorry I got confused since I have Tamiya's 1/48 F4U-1A as well.

Late war Corsairs were painted overall Gloss Dark Sea Blue, which is available from ModelMaster.  The earlier tri-color scheme was also seen on some D models, which would be non-specular Dark Sea Blue over Intermediate Blue on the top side with White on the underside.

Alrite, kul thanks.  I will assume that tri-color scheme has the same colors as the Avenger?  accurate miniature's site actually has an online build  which had a mix guide for those colors.  I will wait to try them out on the 1A.

Ok, it's official.  I made my decision and picked up the kit today.  I'm doing the 1/48 Accurate Miniatures SB2U-3 Vindicator.  As it stands right now the build will be OOB with the markings that came in the kit, a marine version based on Midway.

Ok, I changed my mind....  I really want to do a Wildcat, so I'm going to do Trumpeter's 1/32 F4F-4 Wildcat instead of the Vindicator.  (Besides, I wanna start my Vindicator this weekend heh heh)

yup. they would be the same for an Avenger of the same period... Dark Sea Blue on top, a pattern of intermediate blue on the sides (like on the online build) and white on the bottom...

Here's a restoration with the basic idea but I would search on google images for actual wartime shots to get it right... (and yeah the outer parts of the undersides of the wings would be painted like in the picture... )

The outer wings were painted this way so if the Aircraft were on the deck with wings folded they would be less visible.

Wooverstone, looks like I'll not be getting my corsair any time soon (at least not before May!) but we have 6 months or so for this GB so don't count me out just yet!

My Boly is taking centre stage for now (pics to be posted soon in the Canadian GB) but they are both ready for the first coat of paint.  I've never done german camo before so this'll be fun!

sorry to be a pain, but...... I picked up Tamiya's 1/48 F4F-4 Wildcat instead of the other kit.  I promise I won'd change my build again.  Blush [:I]
