That was very funny, milk almost came out of my nose.

Leon - the Navy History site (on the navy.mil page somewhere) has some awesome shots of before and after battle aircraft, you can see the numbering, the shades of the colors (how dark or light they were) etc on there... if I find it I will post it here for ya!

OK, In possibly planning ahead check what I have gained from this thread so far.

I can do my sbd-1 in the two tone scheme. I should put the large insignia with red stars on and then try to make it look like the red was painted over with white (or shite whatever is available ). I should use red / white stripes on the tail and also paint over those (with the gray-blue??)

Some more questions. I understand the sbd-1 had metal interior. Would it have been updated with zinc chromate or kept metal if they repainted the exterior? If it was from VS-8, would the marking on the side involve an s? Do you think I can just make up a number to go on the side / wing since I don't have this info (say 5? I like 5). Any other thoughts if you were to do this?

By the way, I don't know if I'll keep it as I'm not sure where I stand on signatures, but I am kind of excited that I figured out how to do a little trick in my signature. I put a link to the completed build for each completed GB badge. What do you think? Good idea? Lame?

I can help on the SBD-1 question.  The cockpit interior would not have been repainted but would have remained in BMF/Silver lacquer.

Actually that's a great idea Leon to link your GB badges like that.  Falls in the "Why didn't I think of that" category. 

Jeeves- Great! I got you down for a Hellcat in 1/48.

 

Gwaihir- What you did with the sig is pretty cool. Now you can show that you completed the build. I think it’s a good idea.

Leon - the only lettering on the side of it would be S-(plane number)  Like S-4 or something.  They had painted over the squadron number prior to the battle to hinder identification of which carriers were employed in the attack.  Typically any number would do.

Great idea on the GB badge being linked by the way!  And some awesome builds you have there.  Love the NMF finish on the P-51, what did you use?

Thanks Tom. The NMF on the p-51 and the p-47 are snj. I have alclad to try, but haven't got around to it. I am really glad I used the snj powder though because I rub a little of the extra on seam lines of current builds to see if they show up. For that it is a great product. I figure the extra powder from a starter set will last me forever when it comes to checking seams.

I put an extra space in both of the starting brackets to make it inactive. So essentially it is url=the site (or photobucket picture) you want it to link to (all in brackets). Then the regular image setup for the badge image. Then both end brackets. I don't know if I'm explaining it well, but in mine 4.htm is the page with my completed build, and 1.gif is the badge image. Let me know if I am explaining it clearly.

Oh one more thing. The negative is that it takes quite a few 'characters' to accomplish this and there is a limit to signature size. I'm not sure if there is a better way, but this is what I figured out.

I mean convinced you to join yet Leon???  we can help you through making that SBD fly... you've got two confirmed aficionados of SBD;s right here... in fact I have been pondering do I want to do another dash-3... I might change my build.... or better yet a dash-2 since you are doing the dash-1.  (yes I have many SBD's in my stash )

I'll chuck my hat in as a bit of a SBD nutter too Tom. I really enjoyed building my one for the Midway build and am already planning my next build (probably a coral sea period SBD-2). Might even do one for this build. Another Hellcat is also an option too. Or maybe both :::Evil laugh:::

Yes Tom, I'm ready to stand up and commit to the SBD. I definately appreciate everyone's willingness to help. My biggest fear was that I would do the dash-1 in the later color and everyone would just jump at the opportunity to tell me it was wrong. Now I have a little confidence with the help I am receiving here that it will at least be feasible.

Wow. It was very entertaining watching those Corsairs and Hellcats landing on the carriers. Man those Corsairs are tricky bird to land, especially on carrier flight decks. I never knew the British aircraft carriers had such a narrow flight deck..

I never knew videos like this existed on the net, especially the training films for the Corsair. So many bottoms and switches on that thing, too many procedures…

You think that is something.. you should be in the Navy and read one of their preventative maintenance manuals!!!  It could make a spoon seem like a nuclear weapon in complexity!!!

Wow, that’s pretty descriptive. If they can make a spoon seem like Nuclear weapon, I wonder what they can do for chopsticks?

Yep. It’s perfectly find, just as long as the aircraft took part in WWII and has the markings to show that it did.
