F1 Group Build

Sorry, was taking my time to stop laughing, picking myself up from the floor, etc.. The progress on the Renault is a sad situation. Still pre-building, but at least the front suspension is done, too, as is the seat and safety belts, the body is attached to the floor pans and the chimneys are done and attached.

Next is to build up that little winglets on the sidepods and (oh bugger...) the rear wing. On standby, so got nothing done this weekend. Next weekend, though, might be muuuch better regarding progress!

May I give you a hint (and all other airbrushers as well)... when you brake your AB jar, don't just wait till your replacement arrives.
You know those (usually black) plastic cups that contain 35mm film ?  Take one of those, make a hole in the lid, unscrew the connection thinghy from your AB jar-lid and install it onto the plastic lid of your film cannester, et voila : an instand replacement (and if you have lots of those ; also disposable) jar for your AB
Oh, and the fact that we use digital cams shouldn't be problem, I sometimes (at least once a month) go to a photographer and ask for those empty cannisters, they're usually glad to get rid of them anyway.

Actually that does make sense to me, after all, all other cars and trucks (except the millitary of course) are in the same 1/24 or 1/25, so they can be used together.

OK, I'm on my way now...  glue on engine block is setting as I type, when completely dry I'll do some filling on the (small) gaps and put some paint on it.

It's gonna be real fun "going back in time" with this kit, as I was looking at the parts, the idea struck me that if I hadn't known the kit is actually over 20yo, I wouldn't even believe it's Tamiya

Something new from Tamiya?  I wish.  I think we had this discussion before, I'm all about a current  F1 car in 1/12.  Say... an MP4/20, I'd even get excited about the Renault.  (Sorry, not a fan of french cars.)  The only new item of late is the rally cars.  The word I keep hearing is Tamiya lost their shirts on the FW-14B and are reluctant to bring out anything new in 1/12.  I keep bugging Scale Motorsports to do a detail set for the FW-14.  No go yet, but we can dream.  If you are really sick, take a look at MG Models Plus from Italy.  Most of the recent Ferraris in 1/12 and some really neat older stuff.  Be warned, spendy kits and it will take ALOT of work to make them look nice.  I'm still dragging along on the F399. 

I don't understand Revell doing the F1 cars in 1/24, someone really needs to explain that one.  And the really nasty seam line along the side of the tub.  Ouch, fun making that disappear.  On the flip side if you want to avoid resin it's the only way to go for "modern" cars. 

New house is done, with any luck the workbench will be in operation in another month or so.  Finally I can get back to the MP4/19B.  It feels like forever since I had a chance to ruin a kit!   SeaBee, how is the Renault coming along?  Anyone else out there getting anything accomplished lately?

Thanks for the info on the plank there,  amazing how many things have changed since don't follow the F1 scene anymore.  Anyway, now that Schummy has been thrown off his throne things are beginning to be a bit more interesting nowedays.

As for other news... I just got home with a re-release of Tamiya's Tyrell P34 (item nr 20053), that's the oddball with 6 wheels instead of 4 and that's the kit I'll be doing for the GB...

Thank the FIA for that little piece of technological wonder....  You may recall the sparks flying off 80's and early 90's cars from the titanium skidplates. Well, nowadays there's just brownish puffs. Unless that's just the drivers realising at what speed they're traveling towards a corner...

They introduced it to reduce speed in the 90's by enforcing an elevated ride-hight (thus less aero downforce). The "plank" (as it is called) may not wear thinner than a certain measure - which I can't recall. Schumi even got docked his points in one race (Spa 94?) having spun and skidded across a rumblestrip, which of course wore the plank down too much.

As for the kit - I haven't built that one. To add to what's allready been said: the few Revell's I have built learned me to relax, build it, be prepared to work on it a bit (everything don't faal into place like newer Tamiya kits) and you'll get a very nice curbside model in the end. Decals are usually super! Build it, enjoy it, I don't think you'll be sorry.


As for the comment about the sportscars - the only luck there is that they are re-releasing a lot of them. I recently got hold of the Jaguar after years of absence. Seen the Sauber C9 around as well and I think the Mercedes Sportscar will also be re-released shortly. Just keep the scanners peeled, they'll pop up. Unfortunately nothing new. Would love an Audi or Aston Martin!

Well, I bought it, so I'll have to build it.... but just till I get my hands on a Tamiya... too bad they don't produce as many nice sportscars as they used to do in the good old days.
So, what about that woodgrain that's on the bottom ?  Is it really wood on a 21th century sportscar ?

Some good amount of sanding work on the body.  If you are looking for details, no you pretty much won't find it in that kit, the suspension is more toyish than a 1/24 hotwheel F1 diecast if you haven't seen it already, BUT it's a nice and easy build and the decals are incredible, so it builds into a nice representation of the toyota F1.  The TF102 is also one of the later kits that has nice quality tires.  The ones prior to it... even the FW23 had crap.  I built one for my friend who works for panasonic and currently have their F-2003GA, renault r23, and the F-2005, MP4/20 on their way to my door if  you want to get more info on those.

Ah yes, now I remember the name... Brabham, very nice car, well in my opinion anyway, but like the french say "de gout et de couleur, on ne dispute pas" (on taste and color we don't argue).

Anyway, remember when I said I was certain it would be a Tamiya kit ?   What have I done, what have I done, I bought a Revell 1/24 Toyota TF 102....  Will I be disappointed by it ???

BTW, while examening the parts I noticed something that looks like a "wood" texture at the bottom of the chassis... that can't be right, can it ???

The BT46 has been rereleased - I have seen a "clear" version at my LHS. Sounds like that's the car, anyways. Aaaah, the good ole days!

If it's tamiya it's a brabham BT46.  The sponsor was Parmalat.  Most of these together with a large portion of Tamiya F-1 cars have gone OOP though.  but there is always ebay.

I remember building an F1 about 20 years ago that I really loved, the shape and the color. Don't ask me what it was but I'll try to give you a description.  It was dark red (not the Ferrari-kind) and had stripes in dark and light blue, the windscreen was blue tinted as well, and IF I'm not mistaken the main sponsor was either Martini or Parmalat.
Anyway, I'll check what they have in my local hobbyshop...

If you're wondering, the newer F1's by Tamiya are actually very nice to build. Mp4/13 onwards. Well, basically F2000, F2001 and FW24, to make a full list. FW24 a bit more intricate with paintscheme's of course. But the older one's of course have their own appeal. They just made things like the wings easier to allign, etc. In some just before that, they actually have pre-built wings, but that makes the inside a bit difficult.
But take your own pick - don't think they made a bad F1 model!

Haha, Frosty, there might be lots of competition for the rest of the posium, it seems there's not much comp for the top step... The rest of the teams have to get their act together...

As for the R25's pre-build: did the seat and belts, installed it and even put the top onto the floorpan! Major accomplishment... Will start on some of those pesky winglets and chimneys through the week.

I'm not sure yet, it's been years since I made an F1.  What I am sure of is that it will be a Tamiya-kit.

Unless objected to by our Bernie, I say the more the merrier.   What are you bringing to the grid Dan?

The long winter season is finally over.  At least for F1.  Still frozen in my part of the world.  Hope everyone in the US section of our group has recovered from those lovely middle of the night races.  Great races, and you gotta love the qualifying format!  Glad to see someone has found the workbench again.  I'm still in the homeless stage, new place isn't done and I had to get out of the old one.  I'm going nuts not being able to work on the kits.  

Build shelters - it's gonna start raining soon!

We had a nice long weekend over here and I actually got around to the R25! Front suspension done. Not 100%, but noted what needs to be done in the final build. Seat and floor resin parts cleaned up and ready for use. So the seatbelts and cleaning up of the steering wheel (tedious job!) to be done next. Nothing waiting on the steering heel, anyways. Can sit and clean that in front of the telly...

But to have at last progressed some on this kit again, makes me feel muuuch better!

my vote 4 best moments: fernando alonso driving by the car which spun rite in front of him &

almost took him out of the race, or that final pit stop by the renault crew that got him out just in

front of michael schumacher, was that ever close !!!!

Well I picked out the 1/20th Tamiya F-2000 here are some pics

Nice kit heck its Tamiya! Airbrushed the engine aluminum then brushed on clear yellow for the gold leaf parts. As you can see I need to go over the black again, also need to airbrush the black parts of the car if I get around to it tommorow.

Well heck maybe I will join, I have have a few that I need to get out of the stash. MP4/20, Bennetton B188, F-2000, Tyrell 020.

Lovely! I have their superdetail set for the FW24. I am nowhere close to starting with that (physically, mentally or skill-wise!) Before that I'll have to *blush* start working on this one again! And my "Barbie Ferrari" with their PE set only - as preparation for the FW24. If the F2001 detail set is anything like the FW24 one, I understand what you mean by plucking up the courage! Good luck!

On standby this weekend, so I will do no building! But next weekend is a long weekend...

As for the new season: STR car will be a decaller's nightmare! Will have to hear on Monday how the new qual system worked out and who found which loopholes in the rules... But those Honda's are looking ominous. Sure the new season will get all of us inspired for the continuation of this GB again!

the new honda & mclaren cars look good... altho'  i think the mclaren looks like a

(very aerodynamic) beer can in that livery, i like it too, LOL ! 

as 4 my f2001, i am now working up the courage 2 use the SMS detail set which

i got as a present (wow, is it intense.... so much 4 this as an OOB build !)

Whoever does the 1/20 of that car had better be really good with Alclad!  Talk about bright, need welders lenses on your camera before taking photos in daylight.  All in all, I love it a real silver arrow.  Meanwhile on my MP4/19B, life is come to a complete halt.  After dropping the jar for the airbrush, I finally managed to get a new one via mail order.  It arrived just in time to be packed up with the rest of the house.  Moving really puts a crimp in the model building.  The bad news is I am homeless until May.  The good news is I have located a place to airbrush and hopefully work will resume in the near future.   How to to Bahrain???

I am okay with it.  Perfer the new RedBull car's scheme though.  Nice and clean (well that also means the lack of sponsorship).  But I am a sucker for the dark navy blue and the gold went pretty well with it.  Favorite McLaren color though, gotta be the Marlboro red and white.  I grew up watching Ayrton Senna, nothing more need to be said about that.

Call this a discrete bump... But did anybody see the new McLaren chrome livery?! I'll most likely be flamed for this, but I actually quite like it!

Archangel, best place to go will be Scale Motorsports - they have a lot of very good PE sets, superdetail sets and CF templated decals (normal ones available too, of course!) Their stuff are also sold elsewhere, not only availble via themselves. Racing Miniatures, HLJ and Mediamix are some of the places to check out.

You will also have the option of going for Studio 27, which should be available via the same places. ScaleRacescars also have a few PE sets of their own - also sell a lot of other goodies.
