folks, the F2001 has left the starting line !
well, all i've really gotten done is 2 look over the instructions
& hit the body w/ italian red & the undertray, engine & suspension parts
w/ metallic black.
the body color is so close 2 the molded styrene that it almost looks
exactly the same, but it is painted...
tamiya plastic & tamiya rattlecans go pretty well together,
the paint went on w/ absolutely no problems &
looks really good so far... Big Smile [:D]
i'll post some pix once i get a few pieces glued together.
this is going 2 b fun !!!

Actually technically it was raced twice, but only once in the F1 champs. Piquet raced it at Donnington (1979?) in a non championship race raising funds for the Gunnar Neilson Cancer Fund where he came 4th.

Well there you go. Sorry, my research didn't extend that far. Still, can't wait to see it. I'm a big fan of Gordon Murray's work. The guy was a genius before his time. Imagine if he'd worked for Colin Chapman!

Hi boys. Just discovered this GB, & it's right up my alley. Count me in. Only problem now is - what to do. I've only got maybe 50 of the suckers to do! Has to be something a little different. I'll get back to ya when I pull the model room apart. I'm thinking it will be strictly oob, except for CF & BMF. BTW, when does this finish?

Jules:- Where do you get Easy Off from? I've not heard of it. I have used Lift-Off from Polly Scale before & it does a pretty good job.

Mark:- Brabham BT 46 fan car! That's an ambitious project. Can't wait to see pics. Raced once, won once - Anderstorp 78.

Cheers

And after that mouthfull, I forgot something!

Frosty: don't know about comparative prices, but I would go for the SMS detail set before the rest. I also suspect the have both a PE set and a super-detail set for the F2001, the latter of which was on a special a while ago. They also have templated CF decals for the kit, Marlboro decals, etc... Depends on what you want to do. Maybe the PE set will be suffice.

You might want to peek over there: http://www.scalemotorsport.com/default.asp

cupcai: what do yuo mean "full detail"....? If it's engine detail: the first one with engine detail will be the MP4/20, which is (still) not released yet. And it is a metal kit, not resin. Their R25 will have engine detail as well, but will only be re;eased after that. Their previous efforts were the F2004 (1st) and the R5, neither of which had engine detail.

I have heard very good things about it, though. Some guys commented about the F2004's sidepods being a bit too short - whether or not this is so visible that anyone will notice it (esp now that the car is not current) I will not know. I will try them out for sure some time. The stack is just too big to fit another kit in at this stage!

Here is a link to a guy that built both of their existing kits, looks good to me!
http://www.f1modeler.com/

As for resin kits with engine detail - I am currently awaiting Model Factory Hiro kits, both metal and not resin, but with engine detail, at least. (97T and BT52) And they are not as pricey as some S27 stuff.

Getting to the stage where I am about to finish and decal my current one (Revell Sauber). Will start working on the R25 after that... And yep, from what I read up thusfar, that seems about to be the gist of it: spend ages cleaning, pre-building, aligning, then give it a "quick paint and slap-together"! Wink [;)] Quick releative to the rest of the process, that is!

I too have started. I got to a stage where I couldn't do anything with my current project so pulled out the Tamiya 1/20th BT46 and the Club M resin fan car transkit that I've had for years. The transkit consists of resin front wings, body top, engine sides, rear wing) and white metal (exhaust, fan blades, exhaust support) bits. The instructions are poor and in Japanese and there is one colour photo f the finished kit which also shows indifferent fitting of the body. Sure enough when I dry fitted parts I can see several fit problems coming up. The original Tamiya kit has a removable cockpit cowling and engine cover, I think I will glue down the replacement resin parts. I will also have to spray the dark royal blue used along the engine cowl sides as the transkit didn't have any additional decals. The fan car had a slightly different colour scheme across the engine cover. Fortunately the Tamiya decals provide all the script that goes over the blue as seperate decals so I won't have any match-up problems - just masking problems instead! There is a bit of pin holing in the resin and one corner of the rear wing has broken. I'll take a picture of the transkit next weekend and post. Maybe I'll have some of the original kit together by then as well.

Anyone has experience with Red5 model b4? I guess it's the only resin model maker which have full detail for their F1 kit.

The ever changing face of F1. Thank the gods that tire changes are back. That new rear wing? When pigs fly...ugliest thing I have seen since the x-wing era. I'll withhold judgment on the qualifying format. At the races, single car qualifying is BORING! On TV, well at least you got Hobbes and Matchet. Worked on the McLaren last night. Gotta luv S27, hours of clean-up, paint, shake and voila, it's done! Yea, right!

I'll try and post a photo of the 1/43 Williams in the next week or so.

The Bernie Circus with ever-changing rules! Wink [;)] New qualifying rules, back to old tyre rules, new engine restrictions, new rear wings (again) and some more plans afoot... Not to mention some rules still aren't out in the open. Never ceases to amaze.

You need some serious therapy - at least for the eyes. I've just looked at some 43rd models - how you guys do it, I will never know! Good to see another S27 build in the GB. Mine will be my first attempt at it, so I might end up pestering you with real stupid questions, if you don't mind...

Frosty, that is the bummer about the Revell kits, yes. Very curbside... (But then again, talking of curbside... so is the majority of S27's kits!) At least the Sauber I am fiddling around with now has an attempt at an engine, unlike the square block of the EJ10. But that is quite a fun build. Take your time with the rear wing and with the wheel (suspension) allignment. I did not take enough care with the latter and now have a sliiight uneven wheelbase. (Or a scew table!) At least it seems as if there are some steady improvement from Revell.

Greetings Fellow followers of the Bernie Circus:
Is it to late to join this merry band? Just finished a (let's just say it took a long time to finsh) Williams FW-11B in 1/20 and 1/43. I should be in therapy. Instead, opened up the Studio 27 McLaren MP4/19B last night and started work. Interesting kit with the twin keel design, may have to do some mod work on it. This afternoon, I found you fine people. Cheers to all.

There are two Jordan's by Revell - which did you order? I recently did an EJ10 (the buzzin' hornets one) but I know there is the one with the snake as well (bitten hissen?). Don't know about the other one, but the buzzin' hornets had a bit more work than a F2001 will have. But a very nice car to build...

the kit looks very nice, but i was a bit disappointed
2 see that it's a curbside model, no engine
or transmission parts. of course, i don't mind a bit of
scratchbuilding... but i think i'll take ur suggestion &
build the tamiya F2001 kit 4 this GB, otherwise i will
probably end up w/ another major project added 2 the logjam.
plumbing & wiring the F2001 motor will probably b enough
of a challenge 4 me 4 now !
sorry 4 the l8 reply !

You guys are quite quiet out here! Anyways, I have what I suspect will be the correct colour for the light blue. Will be done by a/b, not canned spray. Still containing myself, itching to start as I am. I will first finish one model before starting this one! Building four at a time cannot be a success...

Ryan, you get sorted with those instructions?

folks, i took a peek in the box of the tamiya ferrari F2001 kit...
it really looks like a fun kit 2 build w/ great detail even OOB,
& i'm looking forward 2 getting in2 it...
but i'm still not sure if that will b my kit choice 4 this GB.
i have a Revell Jordan-Mugen-Honda F1 kit in 1/24 scale on order
& want 2 wait & c what that one looks like b4 i decide.
(i'm fonda hondas ...)
looking forward 2 building something very very fast & nimble
w/ u all !

Ryan, I have some other detail sets for the FW24s (still to be built). If you can scan the instructions (or take a pic of it) and put up a pic of the PE parts, I can have a look at what I have and we can maybe figure it out that way.
Should be overlapping parts going onto the same places, with maybe clearer instructions. Let's try to sort this thing out and get you going. Not saying I will be able to help, but will give it a try.
It may not be quick, but at least it's worth a shot. I will not be available for the first part of next week, so that will be the reason for not responding at that time. Let's see what we can figure out before then, at least.

I bought the Lion Roar PE set for my FW24. It is a great PE set, but the instructions are a bit confusing.

Here's where I'm at. Going to buy some wood today so I can build my new work desk. Once that is built, I might start some work on my T4.

Progress so far
1. Put a tape in the VCR
2. Opened the kit
3. Pawed at all the plastic
4. Read the instructions
5. Got interested in the race on TV and forgot what I was doingClown [:o)]Whistling [:-^]

Burning to start the R25, obviously, but will first finish the Sauber.

Regarding my decal issues: according to S27 themselves it was designed that way...

Montoya's engine woes ensured Renault a double victory. Congrats to Renault and Alonso. It's nice to see someone besides Schumacher and Ferrari win. McLaren will win both next year. ;)

Bob, you can use masking tape, Glad Press N Seal(parafilm), or Silly Putty to mask. On my FW24, there is a raised line where the color separation is, and there are silver decals that cover the color demarctation lines. I'll probably use Silly Putty and Tamiya Spray Lacquers over MM Lacquer Primer for a nice smooth finish.

Feel free to start today!

ryanpm-thanks. That was the way I was leaning. Now I'm just trying to think my paint order/masking strategy.

Paint the whole thing its proper colors. There will be many defects in the plastic when you are done and they are best covered up. Some of these defects are scratches, lighter plastic from the sprue connections, and swirl marks in the plastic.

The Tamiya Benetton B192 is in my hands. I was surprised to see that it is molded in yellow & black. Given that I haven't built a 'pre-painted' Tamiya F1 since 1975, is it common practice to go ahead and paint the proper colors or is it wiser to Future the existing pre-painted body and then decal?

That one has not hit my door step yet. I think that I have the ultimate tape delay system. Since I cannot afford the systems required to get the coverage, my brother tapes the races for me and gives me a copy when we see each other about once every three months. I get my next delivery in about 3 weeks.Whistling [:-^]
