Stuff like Zap Gap CA is best used as filler when you want to build and build and build without having to wait for putties to dry. Plus it makes for a stonger bond. For most construction I use things like Pro Amber Weld or Tenax but if it looks like I'm going to join something that will have a bit of a gap or warpage doesn't allow a regular liquid cement to hold two pieced together, I'll use Zap Gap.

Yup, that's the stuff. Generically called CA, short for Cyanoacrylate. aka super glue.
Stuff dries hard as a rock, so I wouldn't use it if you need to sand. (I never tried sanding after using accelerator, as Aurora-7 suggests...)

I belive it is gap filling CA.  The attendant at the hobby shop called it gap filler.

Thanks for the help

I've used Zap Gap for glueing and sanding on the spot. It's quicker than using putty but the V-man is right about it not sanding as easy. If you glue two pieces with CA and use some accelerator, it's OK because the freshly cured adhesive is still soft enough to sand easily. But if you do not sand it right away, the glue  can be rock hard (depending on the brand) and you will end up sanding away the plastic around the glue.

Jeeze! guys, thanks for reminding me I need to get some more CA!

Man, I went crazy this weekend a spent some cash on this Hobby.(air brush, paint, putty, gap filler, thinner, cleaner, Dukes of Hazzard kit)  Luckily I am single with an understanding girlfriend, so I did not have to answer to anyone or justify my purchases.  Hehehehe.

I did work on my super valkyrie this weekend. I laid down the primer and began assembly.  The question I have is this:  I want to fill in the seams on the arms and legs.  Should I use putty or gap filler?

I purchased both over the weekend.  Just not sure which one will work the best.

As always your advice and comments are greatly appreciated.

Since it's a pretty small subject, relatively speaking, it's a long build. It will end sometime in 2006. Probably later in the year. We will think about closing the build later next year.

Wish I had the time and money otherwise I would rather be doing a "Super Ostrich" or the "Elint Seeker" Valkyrie.

I would assume that there are multiple colour schemes for the fighters depending on the environment that they are fighting in.

Same as with modern aircraft, so feel free to go wild.

Plus, there are plenty of 1/72 markings out there to help you out.

The standard colors to the Super Valks are pretty boaring. The basic white, red, blue or tan color to the valk's fuselage (depending on who the pilot was) and the standard trim and then the booster and armor attachments which tend to look dark grey or black, depending of how it looked on your TV. There have been many imaginative color schemes doen by people so I would advise to use the above links by trigger to get some ideas.

Here's an image of the standard VF-1A scheme:

And here's a custom one:

Can anyone help?  I am building a 1/170 Super Valkyrie VF-1S. I should have the preshading done tonight.  My question is what is the overall color of the a/c?  Is it white or grey?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Here's where I had left off on my Hasaegawa VF-1A Battroid a few years ago. Just a bit more construction to do and then to start finishing.

Cobrahistorian just sent me this link which I think y'all will like. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8325577713966755008&q=macross

It's not directly related to modeling, but should provide a great source of inspiration for this build

Okay, I can't resist. I've got a VF-19, VF-22 and VF-0 ready to go. I want to finish up two existing GBs first before I start on those, but I'm in!

I am starting tonight for good on my Minmay guard, just got the last color I needed(radome).

Will start with the backpack and some assemblies on the arms and legs, prior to tackling the areas with lots of decals.

If everything goes well the battroid and the 1/100 Nataku will be primed this weekend.

VINMAN, noticed your progress pics. Quick question. On your preshading, do you apply only after primer or can you do it after your first coat of paint? Also, is that considered as a "wash" or is that something completely different. Sorry if the questions sound dumb, but I am getting back into the hobby after many years and all I remember then was just to build them out of the box. Now, it's so different. Any advice from yourself or from any other is welcomed and greatly appreciated.

You SHOULD pre-shade AFTER you prime. (For some reason I was lazy and did not prime...I'm probably going to pay for it later...) The primer should be the first thing you put onto the plastic. It helps with paint adhesion and evens out colors. A "wash" is completely different. A wash is applied as one of the last steps. Before your final gloss/flat finish.

Check these sites out:

And don't be sorry. No question is stupid. If no one asks, then this place would grind to a halt. Smile [:)]

Welcome back to the hobby and Good Luck!

Will start to get cracking on my Minmay Guard this weekend.

Start will be assembling the first major sections and maybe painting them.
Due to the number of decals for this kit I will be doing one major section after the other, rather than my normal build along procedure.
