Progress:

My Panther II is about finished with its base coat.  Since it was not really built during the war (with the little turret and the big gun), I decided to paint the base coat panzer green.  I've seen it on a lot of late war models, so I decided to give it a go.  One problem...I'm using a newer and bigger air compressor.  I'm not used to having any control over the air pressure, so the paint is going on a little heavier than normal.

After a break to watch olympic curling (for like 7 days), I've started the photoetched "skirts" for the Stug IV.  Fortunately, they give a few extra skirt hanger parts.  I'm 6 out of 7 right now with 24 more to place.  The one missing part is either in the coat of my retriever or somewhere on my beige carpet.

Pics to follow when more progress is achieved.

Will, that's great. Can't wait to see the little guy.

Panzerwulf, I can relate. I just found a couple more Braille Scale German tanks that I could add to this build. I may get started again but I don't know when.

Frostygirl, good luck on that model; I'm glad to see it's started already. I know how difficult it is for you to resist adding more parrts. Mischief [:-,] I am definitely looking forward to seeing your soft edge camo. That should look great!

Keep those builds coming everyone!

Wow Chris!!! That gives a whole new meaning to the term "Heavy Metal" Seriously it looks great and your wash really sets it off. Your making it hard for me to concentrate on what is already on my desk instead of diving into my stug.

Hello to all. I've been reading all the posts and would like to join in. I'm new to the forums, and would like to get in on a group build. I build a lot of 1/72 WW2 armor, and a lot of it is German. I love the DML kits, and that's what I build almost exclusively in that scale. I am currently working on the Jagdpanzer IV L/70 as well as the Stug IV (early version). When I finish the Jagdpanzer, I plan to start on the Hornisse, which I got for Christmas (interesting story on that...I'll tell it sometime!).

The decals just went on a few nights ago, and I'll be starting the weathering soon, so the L/70 should be done here in the near future.

 Cheers! Big Smile [:D]

Welcome ammoSid.

I look forward to seeing your kits.

As for myself, I went on a business trip last week with my Early Stug IV and a Mirage 7TP twin-turret (a big departure from anything German).  I didn't want to lose any PE in the hotel carpeting from the Stug, so I went nuts on the 7TP.  Anyone for a pre-war Polish armor group build???  Thumbs Down [tdn]  I didn't think so.

I'll resume progress on my kits tonight with some progress photos to follow.

Panzerwulf, I agree with Razor, that is one incredible Maus! I echo his sentiment about the wash; I wish I could get mine as good looking as that!

Ammosid, welcome. I also build exclusively 1/72 scale armor, but I don't limit myself to WWII. I build any and all I can. I look forward to seeing what you bring to this Group Build.

Thanks Duke,Razor I actually washed it twice once a brownish black to bring out the detail and cast look of the armor then used my soft sand&dusty kahki drybrushing to highlight after that i decided to give it more relief by using a pin wash of straight black to the major panel lines and recesses to really bring out the depth of them. I loved the project so much that I'm planning on getting dragons 1/35 scale maus. as i said before the verry best medium i found for washes is the little cakes of kids watercolors I use crayola brand myself I'm glad you like the maus my Jagdpanther is getting close to being finished as well heh maybe i can Crank out a kit every month or so until the end date lol

Mischief [:-,]oh btw rooster and the rest of you guys how would you all be interested in a 1/72 ARMOR MAD WEEKEND GB eh???Mischief [:-,] TTFN

Count me in...I've been looking for a reason to build the Hasegawa Panzer IV F2 (which is really just a different box around the IVG).  I'm learning that mad builds are not good for kits with link and length tracks or PE.Cool [8D]

BTW...fantastic Maus.  Approve [^]

Sounds interesting but I'd have to pass. I got too much going on during the weekends. Still, I may be adding another project or two to this Group Build since I have several more kits that potentially fit here.

HMMMM that stinks I may revise the concept how about calling it "the Braile scale armored Vacation GB" yup a 2 week build any 1/72 scale armor any era, country, type, and manufacturer. TYPE as in armored car,APC,tank, jeep, truck, recovery vehicle, artilliary etc. Manufacturer as in company of model production Tamigawa,DML,revellogram You get the idea what do you all think? that way any of us who are weekend free time deficient ( duke and myself when my 3 nephews are over LOL) can still get in the build and give all others a bit more time to turn out the kits nicely

Thanks, folks. I'll post some pics as soon as I can. Also, kudos on the Maus. I built that one, too, but I finished it back in early December, so it wouldn't count in the group build. If I don't forget, I'll take a pic or 2 & post it if you'd like.

As far as my Hornisse I've yet to build, I got that for Christmas. My wife was out of work and upset that she didn't have any money to buy me a gift that I really wanted. So, I gave her some money and took her to my favorite local hobby shop. (Local! It's almost 50 miles away!) Anyhow, I walked her through, and pointed out numerous kits that I wanted, then went out & waited in the car. She picked out a few & one of 'em was the Hornisse! I guess that's one way to ensure you get what you want for Christmas, eh? Clown [:o)]

Take care, and I'll post pics as soon as I can. Back to the L/70 for me!

Yeah, and if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his a** a-hoppin'!

Even better...two weeks is way better than two days.

I may attempt the new Mirage Panzer IVC or the Mirage M3 Lee in Fort Benning colors.

I am anxiously awaiting the M3A1 from them.  Nobody had made a cast hull Lee/Grant hull that I'm aware of up to now.

I echo that sentiment. Two weeks is better. I did a Mad Leo Group Build that was a two week affair awhile back. I have numerous kits that would fit in the above proposed  Group Build. I will definitely join provided my camera is back home when this starts. If not, well.....

Hello, I'd also be intersanted in joining this GB, it would give me a reason not to just sit around all day! I'd like to build a Bergepanzer Tiger for your GB.

Oh Panzer, sounds awful, I hope it passes quickly.

I'd like to join this GB, if OK.  I bought today an 'Attack' PzKpfw III Ausf. F, in 1/72 scale.  Looks a bit interesting, and Attack seem to assume that the modeller knows a bit about modelling.

Osher,

I'm glad you joined.  I agree with you on the Attack Models kits.  I have a 38t munitions carrier that looks difficult to build.  Good luck with the kit.

Wulff,

Get well soon.  We'll all look forward to more of your models in the future.

As promised, here are two photos of my Stug IV (Early).  The skirts are still curing, but they have the same "creeping vines" type of camo scheme.  Before I start to weather this monster, I'll probably add a little more of the red color.

The only problem that I've encountered with the kit is with the "Dragon Styrene 100" tracks.  One broke in the middle of the joint at a weak spot (before I put them on the kit).  All of the other problems are my own.

Here is my question in regards to the Stug IV:
Should I place the markings on the skirts or the tank?  I'm leaning on putting numbers and symbols on the hull since not all 10 of the skirts are going to be placed.

It does look good Rooster.  I chose mine as it's a single colour, no fancy schemes to paint.

As for mine: Well, Attack tell you to drill ('if you want') out the holes on the main wheels.  It's more of a necessesity!  Saying that, I'm now drilling out the holes on the small wheels too.  It just looks wrong with solid wheels.  There are loads, so will keep me out of trouble for a while.  However, those big spoked wheels (sorry, don't know technical term) are solid, and really, they should be spoked.  Do I cut out the blank bits?  Yikes, not easy, too small for most sanding devices too.  Yet, those solid wheels look horrid.
  Decisions, decisions...

On the painting & assembling front the lower hull (was about to type fuselage, guess what I normally build), sort of went together OK.  Pin marks on the sides, 3 per side, mar it, and too tight to sand off.  Pity.  Else, build OK, except the hull sides don't match the hull front exactly, so had to sand some side overhang off.  Checked with upper hull, and that's OK, so, hmmm, why are the side too long?

Went for Humbrol 67.  Attack also say Tamiya XF-63 German Grey, but that's way too dark IMHO.  Saying that, research for this build has found all kinds of shades, from medium to darkish.  None as dark as Tamiya, but maybe then sun bleaches it?  Anyway, Humbrol 67 seems good.

Thanks again for letting me join late the GB!  Nice to see everyone else's builds.  I'm stripping my first paint job off, so will post pictures tomorrow.  The first paint was too thin, and looked, well, runny.

Edited to add:
212 holes...everyone to be drilled, cleaned, redrilled, etc, and with the main wheels, between two holes, a small bit to be cleaned, and made into a slot.  This was supposed to be a quick build!  Managed to sand out much of the pin marks on the sides though.  Why didn't I just buy the Revell kit instead...?!
