It's a...BOY!

I also posted this in the BofA dna Allied aces GBs.  As some may have noticed, I haven't been around lately because on May 22 my wife went into labour and at 1:15am on May 23, little Matthew Nicholas Boutin was born.  So here's a little picture of him a few days after we got home.  The last week has been really crazy so to all the people I am in GB's with, all bets or off as to whether or not I'll finish them in time.  If you want to see more pics, you can go to: http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i107/mattapriljay/

Bob - usually the Ultracast seats can be cut off with a sprue cutter.  There are four "fins" attaching the seat to the base, just nip each fin individually then sand the left overs down.  Those ultracast seats are the bomb... when done right they really show up the PE belts I think... plus the seats are also much more detailed than kit seats.

Good luck!!!

Rob-looking forward to you sharing your experience with the resin.  I just got the Ultracast seat for my bf109-not as complex as an entire kit, but still will require investment in a razor saw...and probably some kevlar gloves....or bandaids...I'm still a couple of weeks away from starting this GB unless I put something aside.

My He-111 is coming along... I'm almost through the cockpit, just adding some miscellaneous PE.  One thing I am up to my eyeballs researching is the bomb colors.  The best resource I found lists the 250kg bombs as being sky blue (presumably RLM 76), field gray (This is a hard one to call as I don't think they meant RLM 02, I am thinking more of a neutral gray like the Panzers used later), or aluminum.  Anyone have any other references on the subject?

Started the prep work tonight on all that resin, its my first experience with a resin set and after razor sawing all the pouring blocks off and then sanding some of the parts my fingers are killing me. I might have to invest in a vice of some description, presuming this is the tool needed, what do you guys use?.

I have to say i am impressed with the detail on the resin parts although I do have a blob in one of the wheel wells where the landing gear strut connects, not quite sure how to takle this problem as the resin seem brittle and I dont want to ruin it.

The dry fitting of the fusilage has thrown up some problems so I dread to think what will happen when I offer up the wings!

How is everyone getting on with their builds? I will update once I start painting the interior.

I use a pair of pliers clamping on to the pur stub and then razor saw the part free. Every once in a while I take morphine to kill the pain. Wink [;)]Big Smile [:D] (j/k of course)

Applied the first coat of sky blue on the underside of my Spit MK II this morning. Will probably spray the second this evening. If all goes well I'll start the topside camo tomorrow night.

Tom-thanks.  I am totally impressed with the detail of the AM 1/48 C/D.  I'll probably build 'Dirty Dora' from the 345th in the South Pacific.  There is a very good article regarding their raid on Rabaul in the August 2004 Flight Journal.  Looking forward to watching your progress-both the model and the history.  I think that's the thing I enjoy the most-the research on the individual planes and/or the battles/theaters.

Darren - that is most appreciated!  right away I noticed something different about the plane you posted... the Lorraines cross is usually displayed over a sky blue background, this one appears to have a darker blue on the unit markings... I appreciate the help!!!!

Bob - I'll send you some links to the B-25 stuff I have come up with so far... unluckily there are no AM decals or kits with 42nd BG decals contained in them, so tail numbers and the unit insignia will have to be scratched for me... You'll be luckier not being driven to build a specific unit's build.

An interesting note I picked up was the B-25's using skip bombing to hit japanese shipping... they came in low avoiding some of the AA and would skip their bombs either into the side of, or on top of their targets...  I found an impressive pic of a Japanese destroyer caught right at the moment a 500lb bomb slammed into the bow AND frozen mid frame is a 500lb'r that caught a wave and got enough height to be coming down right on top of the AA gun crew.  You can even make out the faces of the gunners looking upward directly at the bomb as it was coming down on them...  I can't imagine the horror of seeing that...

Darren-I've been following Tom's updates on his uncles B-25 with interest.  I picked up  the AM B-25C/D and am saving it for the right moment/group build.  Could I impose on you to send me a copy of the info you are forwarding to Tom?

Thanks

Sounds like there are some interesting builds brewing.

Still a couple of GBs away from starting anything on this one, though looking forward to everyone elses build's in the mean time.

Dave welcome to the build I hope you have a good time.  Another great modeling tool that you can pick up are nail buffing/filing/polishing sticks which come in various grades and are easily obtainable at the local chemist.  Ahhh the joy of going shopping for modeling supplies and coming home with q-tips, nail polish remover and nail boards Big Smile [:D].

Thanks Darren! Yeah, I'm starting to get funny looks for spending so much time on the nail care isle in Wal-Mart Smile [:)]

Dave you must have missed your welcome to the build message, it's on the page 13 I think.  You are definitely on the roster for the build on Page 1 that's for sure.

Tom, yeah it was me that said I some references on the B-25 and I was going to do some hunting on the 42nd for you but I'm sorry I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Rob & Tanky don't despair over CA kits they make fine models with a little bit of work.  I have built the CA Meteor F.8 and it's a great kit packed with detail.  The thing that I found when reading on-line builds of any CA kit is to dry fit dry fit and dry fit again.  Oh yeah Tanky have a large tube of filler and some sanding sticks on standby for the engine nacelles Wink [;)].

yup, these Aires detail sets are painful. Don't say I didn't warn you. Wink [;)] But they're doable. My spitfire I coming along, and I've gotten most parts to fit.

I began mine on the 2nd...by starting to open up certain parts for the resin details on a Tamiya 109.  Well the Aires stuff is like dancing with a pig.  Possible aspect change forthcoming...like skipping the insertion of the DB601 and doing it as a side build...

ah-ha!!!  and that's where you are so wrong Senor Tankmeister!!  Wink [;)]

I started my He-111 last night against my better judgement... the 1/72 PE is a challenge but it is coming together and this weekend I should be able to seal up the cockpit and begin on the exterior.. progress pics as I go!!!

Top seam of my Spit looking better thanks to Tom’s (Tho9900) tip on using putty thinned with nail polish remover as a filler. It’s not perfect by any means, but much improved.  Thanks Tom!

Never heard for sure, but I’m assuming it’s ok that I join the GB a bit late?

curses. and there was me thinking that gloster meteor I won in the raffle looked like a fine and dandy little build. Wink [;)]

But I suppose with some elbow grease I might be able to tackle it...

ok .. the P-47 I was doing for the P-47 GB is doen and delivered to the classroom I promised it to... problem is I forgot to take pictures first...  Banged Head [banghead]  oh well...  That does mean I am ready to go in full swing on my He-111 and Bf-109 I worked up for this... It will probably be the 1/72 Academy Bf-109 as the P-47 almost took it out of me.. between working against the clock to finish it before school was out, to screwing it up once with some lacquer thinner it has sucked the modeling strength from me...

So... prepare to be talked senseless as I can devote my time to this now!!!!  And as our benevolent dictator.....::cough::... er.. leader Darren can tell you.. I CAN talk!! Wink [;)]

Tonight is my night off to relax... tomorrow I build!

Darren - seems work had me a bit dazzled lately too... I totally missed out on this post.  It is the unit insignia the 42nd Bomb Group wore on the tails of their B-25's in WWII Pacific, S. Pacific etc.. was it you that mentioned you had some ref's on the 42nd BG?  I'll have to scroll back and see... after my He-111 I am going for a B-25 of that group as my great-uncle flew tail gunner for 16th months on em in the S. Pacific with the 42nd..

Just had a closer inspection and found more flash than I have evr seen and it seems the fusilage halves are from two different kits, is this normal? One of the wheelwells has a blob of resin where there should be detail as well, starting to think I might need all the advise I can get here.Confused [%-)]

My classic airframes B.P Defiant arrived today and I have to say it looks rather nice on first inspection, lots of resin parts for the cockpit, wheelwells and gun turrret as well as some nice clear bits.

I should start work in a couple of weeks due to family stuff, I cant wait!

Well after a system crash and rebuild of my harddrive I can happily say that most of my research pics have been deletedSigh [sigh]

Hopefully I'll be able to find the pic of the 109 I'm planning on making for this GB.

Darren could you email me that gif program you have if you have a moment or two please.

Hi Darren I'm glad to hear all is good with you I know that feeling of playing catch up at work I hope you'll see your bench soon.  Mrs Bear is up and about, just can't do much as she's right handed and it's the hand in the cast.  She is perfecting her delegation skills though " Oh! Bear..."Big Smile [:D] .  Yup it's an Airfix kit and I will be stoping to pick up some nail polish remover and nail boards this one is going to need it.  I hope to assemle the pit, wings & fuselage tonight and possibly start filling some seems.
