Agreed on Mikesters build... looks awesome!  I liked the effect as well.

Mike(ster) - was it one of those make up sponges on a stick or the wedge shaped ones?  (going to raid the wifes makeup drawer when I get the answer Wink [;)])

Bob - I can almost bet the Omni will do the stippling with needle cap off... I don't have one but it is very similar in design to my Iwatas...

Tom, Chris & luftwaffle (Mikester?)-Thanks for the suggestions.  I've got plenty of time to test out the brush & sponge techniques-and based on the picture that luftwaffle posted, that is the look I'm going for-and very nice work, I might add.

Tom-I'm using the Passahe H while the T&C Omni sits in the box awaiting some test time.  Hope to do that soon.

Bob,

I built this for the ARC BoB GB that we did a short while back.  I stole some make up sponge from my wife, dipped it in a little paint and patted it on a paper towel until there was just a trace of paint left.  Blotted it on the fuselage sides until it gradually built up into the desired effect.  I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.

Bob - I had no real clear pic in my head of stippling (I knew it was dotted paint, that's it haha)  but a lot airbrushes are able to do stippling by taking the crown cap or needle cap off.  (the last little cap on the head assembly)  which model do you have?  Maybe someone here knows if it does or not...

It's be something fun to play with!

Bob The effect you are going for is called "Stippleing" any fairly stiff brush with wide spaced bristles should do the trick depending on the scale a played out pig bristle brush (Errrr.WORN out ) might do the trick. Tom's house brush would also do well just barely put a little paint on the brush tap it on a piece of paper or other surface to check the amount of paint on the brush then tap it on the modelBig Smile [:D] Good Luck and TTFN

Very cool Marc.  I've seen the changing of the Royal Guard at Buckingham Palace a few times, but never had an opportunity to see the RAF march.

Hi All,  I cam across this pic while doing some clean up in the basement and I thought I'd share it with you as the start is only a few days away.

Here is a picture of 401 Sqn CAF on march past during the parade for the 50th Aniversary of  BoB in London Sept 15th 1990.  Shameless plug I'm the tall one right behind the sqn colors, I was a standard escort.  We worked hard getting ready for the parade (the RAF don't mess about when it comes to royal parades) however what a wonderfull experience.

Cheers

actually for that Bob I would either use a "dry-sponge" technique..  where you dip the whole side of a sponge in paint just enough to get the outside damp then get the excess off and just lightly press it onto the side of the plane... you would need a synthetic sponge like those blue ones for the kitchen, they don't have very big pores......

or a 2 or 3 inch house flat house painting brush (no angle to the tip, just staight across at the end) with the same idea, did, remove excess paint then 1 dab on the side of the kit should do it.

Definitely something I would try on a milk jug first... I'll keep thinking for you, Chris is the commercial artist... maybe he can help ya out better than me...

Tom (and Chris)-thanks.  Here is a link to a pic of what I'm going to try to accomplish

Tom Just from the description i can tell you it is a Texture/Effects brush,it is often used in oil painting for creating bushes or grainy (as in wood) textures and such. A very slight circular scrubbing motion could probably be used to acheive a mottle effect.Use just a little paint not as dry as drybrushing but almost to that point, you should definitly practice on some scrap plastic (a primered plastic milk jug works well) to see what works best TTFN

Just been reading up on the Spitfire Mk.II.  Basically, Supermarine built a new factory in 1939 at Castle Bromwich.  However by 1940 production still didn't start, what with constant changes to jigs etc. due to alterations to the design.  To speed things up, a version of the Spitfire Mk.I was developed just for Castle Bromwich.  It was almost identical to the original Mk.I, but called a Mk. II.  According to my book, it entered service in August 1940, i.e. in the middle of the BoB with 611 squadron.  QED, it was a BoB aircraft, if just briefly.  As it was based in Leicestershire originally, I guess it was part of 12 group's big wing.  Maybe this is why Bader ended up having one?

As for me, in a fortnight I move home, so most of my modelling stuff is packed.  I reckon I'll start this GB in late June.  Still, there is now Tornado building exactly the same aircraft as me!

Good luck everyone with the builds!

Just noticed, 6 Hurricanes, and 2 Spitfires. The right proportions for the BoB!

Hey all-My LHS ordered my Hasegawa bf109E-4 (Wick) and it arrived on Friday.  Kinda cool-they can order it and sell it to me cheaper than I can order it from GreatModels (or anyone else).  Nice to support a local business.  Anyway, I digress.  Next step is to order an Ultracast seat and maybe a 'backup' decal set.  Not sure if I can duplicate the camo scheme on Wick's planes.  I have read that the camo was applied with a sponge.  Can't seem to find a 1/48th scale sponge.....Wink [;)].  Did find some interesting paint brushes on sale in the Hobby & Craft section @ Walmart today.  Along with a toothbrush & Paint Dept. stipling brush that I will experiment with.  However, I am open to suggestions if anyone has a proven method.

Thanks

Bob

the Ju88 is cool... the Monogram Pro-Modeler kit is a nice one!

Tom-my LHS has one that has been sitting on the shelf for a couple of years.  However, the box art shows it as a night fighter.  Do you know if the kit contains the parts to make the 'retro' version?

Thanks

Interesting, I looked through the directions and they only show the steps to build the nightfighter.  However I looked at all the parts and they have several clear parts sprues with glass work for the A4 and A5.  There are also two noses.  The nightfighter version nose in a separate bag which includes the radar pieces, and also another nose with what look to be 4 machine guns/cannons.  So, I'll have to look at my references when I get home to confirm specifics, but I'd be willing to bet you could piece together a couple different versions from this kit.

I'd forgotten how kick ****** this kit iCool [8D]s.  It's really very nice.  I'm gettin' the itch to put this one together as it will make one impressive model!

For my shed, I was thinking of going grey so maybe it will eventually turn out as a Luftwaffe universal storage shed, possibly from the Abbeville area of France. Wink [;)]

Actually my house is grey and I still have a lot of stain left over from when I did my deck last year.  I think the colour was called "stonehenge grey" it is a sort of blue grey but I'll definately take some progess pics.

See for this build I had a nice easy Tamiya 1/72 kit with AM decals planned. Yay! No fit problems, and nice detail. But then.... look! Detail moulded directly onto the sidewalls? That can't be good. And... ooohhh look here CMK has some nice resin stuff.

So now I have an Aires resin cockpit and a CMK engine set for it... There goes my nice quick build.

But then again it will look nice to have a superdetailed 1/72 bf-109e to go along with my superdetailed 1/72 spitifre mk.1

Tanky I know exactly what you mean and I get that feeling with just about every kit I build.

For my Hurricane I already have the Ultracast seat with armour plate, wheel well and Squadron Vac formed canopy.  I haven't decided completely yet but I'll probably go for the Eduard Interior set, Ultracast Exhausts and control surfaces as well Blush [:I].

Pathetic isn't it.

Cheers

Jay:  What kind of camo are you going to go with on the Mk 1 garden shed?  Is it German made or Commonwealth?  I'd love to hear you explain to your wife why you painted it with a mottle!! Clown [:o)]

Bob - I think it does have the parts... they are not called out in the instructions, but are those dark shaded parts on the pic of the sprues... (the "not used in this version" parts)  I can't remember, so since Scott still has his kit maybe he can answer it.  I remember looking at it for the last BoB and thinking it was possible to do it...

EDIT - unless you already have that kit it is a moot point, I remember the extra parts were for an R-1 which worked, but it is out of production so that won't help...   Revell DE does an A4 though that would fit the bill nicely!

Jon welcome to this years Battle of Britain GB, I'll put you on the flight roster tonight when I get home.  Are you looking for decals for any Mk.II, or specifically for P7350?  If it's any Mk.II you after then check out Aeromaster's site as they have a few decals for early Spits.

Jay I'm definitely looking forward to some progress pics on your Mk.I Garden Shed and I'm especially looking forward to see how you weather it Thumbs Up [tup].

Bob I think from memory that the Monogram Pro-Modeler Ju-88 does have the parts for the retro version but you are best to get real confirmation from Scott.

Darren, would a 1:1 scale wooden 6x8 shed be appropriate for this GB?Propeller [8-]  (didn't the RAF use such things?) Laugh [(-D]

I ordered  a garden shed package the other day and it just got delivered to my house.  Now, I have all the pieces and must spend the next few weeks building the shed. Yet taking more time away from the plastic addictionWink [;)].  I have to build a cement block pad for it first though (hence the multiple weeks).  so this is going to be a slow process I think, maybe as long as one of my models!

I love to build things and I think I can apply my modelling skills to the shed, hopefully I'll get a good representation but I think I'll leave off the weathering for now (and let that happen naturally).  Somehow I think it'll be a rather big task for the airbrush, I might have to resort to good ol' bristles!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I have the kit at home and will get back to you this evening, unless someone else answers your question before then.  I know the kit can be made as a night fighter or day, but not sure if it covers earlier variants of the C... I'll have to check the kit.

I believe the C variant went into service in the latter half of the Battle of Britain, with the C-6 entering service in September of 1942 (need to check my references to be sure).  I have both of the Squadron in Action books on the Ju-88 at home, parts 1 and 2 which should 2 great Ju-88 references at home if anyone needs any info.  I'll have to check the kit though to be sure what can be made from it.

Good question- I'm not sure. I'll check on it.

Wonder if Mk. II's were used in BoB at all?
------------------------------------------------

Did some further research- turns out the Mk. II was used (not by Bader, though). What's interesting is that one Mk. II, P7350, was used by 266 Squadron and 603 (City of Edinburgh) AuxAF Squadron during the BoB. That same plane is now the Mk. II used by the BoB Memorial Flight! How about that?

This link tells about it. Now I just need to find some decals......
