If anyone involved with this Group Build is considering doing an 80 foot Elco with the Elco Thunderbolt mount (a quad 20mm) ... I have photos and a drawing of it that could be helpful.

Jon,

If you intend to build a model that even hints at accuracy, you have a major challenge ahead with the Lindberg kit.  The basic shapes are wrong and the details are mostly spurious.  Depending on your scratch-building skills and bank account, you could produce any of the 80' boats with any given kit of an ELCO 80.   Take a look at the photos and drawings in Garth's "PT Boats in Action",  John Lambert and my "Allied Coastal Forces of WWII, vol. 2", or any of the other standard references (Chun, Johnson, Polmar, etc.) and you'll see what I mean.

As for any of the RN boats, the 80' hull does not even vaguely correspond with any of them.

Personally People,

In my opinion, ACF, Volume II and Friedman's SMALL COMBATANTS are the best sources.

After much deliberation, consideration of various options, weighing numerous possibilities and outcomes, consultations with learned people and considerable thought on my part, I intend building a Vosper 73' Type 2.

This should be a relatively easy conversion of the Airfix Vosper involving a bit of scratchbuilding and it has a fairly neat colour scheme (and I found an article in Airfix Magazine from October 1978 by John Lambert on the topic)

I really wanted to be a bit more ambitious but the time I have for modelling is limited and consequently trying to scrachbuilding the Fairmile 'D' within the timescale would be too optimistic.  I also fancied building a British Power Boat Co. MGB by converting the Airfix RAF Rescue Launch...I've not ruled that one out yet. So time permitting there may be two from me (he said...famous last words and all that!)

Here's a good question: which would be better... sanding the planks down on the deck or, filling them with putty? Confused [%-)]
I found the answer to my previous dilema on the torp tubes &  am sanding off all the detail from it but the nose & tail.
thanks y'allBig Smile [:D]

Wink [;)] PT,
I'm having a blast reading through the one I've just got for US $0.00 from the library.... Smile [:)]
along with Hunnicuts' Sherman.... Big Smile [:D]
(UKP £350.00 on amazon for THAT!Shock [:O])

Under english law, we are permitted to copy up to 10% of single book, PROVIDED: academic research, or personal, non-commercial use only.

Of course, I buy the books I really really need, when available.... & that leaves me some money to spend on Italeri's vapour-ware ELCO!

I estimate, based on previous experience with Italeri, that with the given Release Date of October here in the UK,
I don't expect to see it generally available till after christmas holidays...

Hey Garth,

The front page of this post should cover all of the options that people are doing, and I will do my best to keep track of everything...if you need me to, I can email you a list later on this week of what everyone who has joined is building.  People are going to join in as time goes by, so it will be a running total.

           Thanks again,

Hello.

I want to clarify the rule #7.

 cthulhu77 wrote:

What is a best a way to use the threads? As I undrestand, the progress pictures & comments are posted under a "build thread", while research & building techniques questions can be posted here (to simplify discussion, if several participants build the same kit).

Is it correct?

Sorry, I did not answer your question about the torpedo tubes, just because we must be careful, and I am still busy with the deck.  The WEM PE set looks pretty good, but they might have added a 1/72 scale plan of the deck.  Also, do not forget CA glue and accelerator, to add some depth to the PE parts.

no problem michelSmile [:)] I think I figured it out on the torp tubes. I sanded everything off except the nose & tail cylinder ontop near the rear of them.  I've been sanding the deck, removing what needs to be removed as well. Gee what fun...Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thought I'd jump in and share some pics of projects I'm working on. All are 1/35th scale. As you can see, the Higgins PT is quite near done. The Elco is still in assembly stage, as is the BK1125. The Higgins and the BK1125 are scratch-built. The Elco is an old Viking USA resin kit that used to be available before Viking went belly-up.

If they don't show up, they're also in my gallery in Armorama.com under member DaveF, some also in Warships Discussion PT Boat

Exactly!  Questions here, or under the various departments in "ships"...each build should have it's own thread in "ships".  It's a good idea to post pics often, as the critics can chime in with advice prior to making a severe mistake...

How is everyone coming along?  My fingers are stained with red putty, and the dust cloud floating around my studio from the sanding could form a moon !
