That's a really nice idea!

Living in Europe (Italy in particular), shipping would be a little expensive (2/3 of the kit value) and the risk of loosing the parcel or getting a damaged model would be higher. Without those handicaps I really would have loved to participate.

Avus, if you want you could send me or someone else some money for like 20.00 US and we could get a model that you like to give and we can send it for you.

Just a thought

Bud

Unless we split it between different continents...gets a bit complex then though

What a wonderful idea!  Include me in!  I assume we are limited to injection moulded?  Vacform is still the darkside for me!

Good point! I'll include that- and welcome aboard!

Have me down. Excellent idea, Jon.

Although I barely have enough allowance money for my own needs. I'll get a model for sure, though.

Jon,

LOVE the badge suggestion!  Timely, too, as the Monogram 1:48 P-39 is my current build!  WTG!

Secret Santa- WWII Aviation GB
Posted by jwb on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 8:03 PM

**** NOTE ****

The deadline for signing up for this GB has passed. Thanks to all who have signed on.

I'd posted this idea for a GB over in the Aircraft forum, and several people thought it was a cool, if off the wall, idea.

So welcome to the "Secret Santa- WWII Aviation Group Build."

Here's how it works.

First, post your interest in this forum, and I'll list all participants in this first post. Deadline for getting in on the GB is October 31st.

Once all the participants are confirmed, I'll ask everyone for their mailing address and email address. I'll compile a list of everyone, then randomly go through and assign each person a "Santa". I'll notify each Santa who their recipient is. I'll set it up so that whoever your recipient is NOT your Santa.

Each Santa will then grab a kit out of their stash, or buy one. Please do not feel obligated to spend more than $20-$25 maximum. This is not about buying the most expensive kit- it's about sharing in the season, the fun, and the friendship. And if you've signed up and find that life has come at you a little too fast- let me know. I don't want anyone to feel excluded because of money.

I certainly don't want to exclude other modeling genres, but to keep it manageable, this GB will stick to 1/48 scale injection molded WWII aircraft, just so folks participating will be on familiar ground when picking out a gift. (It would be cool if other "Secret Santa" GB's crept up for other genres!)

Once you've picked out the kit you'll send as a gift to the recipient, you'll need to wrap it up in wrapping paper, and it would be nice to include a card. Part of the fun of this GB will be getting to know other forum members.

Once you've wrapped it up- mail it off! Obviously, the recipient will know who the sender is. But to keep thigs fun, let's not acknowledge who the senders or recipients are until Christmas.

Target date to have the package mailed to your recipient is November 30th.

Now, we'll all have a nice kit, wrapped up and waiting under the tree.

Starting at 12:01 AM UMT December 25th, folks can begin opening their kits and posting what it is, and who it's from. Pics would be fun! (Folks who open presents before 12:01 AM UMT- it's OK if you cheat and open it a bit sooner. But wait till that time to post! Wink [;)]

Once you've opened your gift from your Secret Santa- let the GB begin.

The rules for the actual build are simple. Build it between Dec 25th, 2006 and June 30th, 2007. Post pics of progress and on completion. AM, resin, P/E are fine- have fun with your gift!

To summarize:

  1. Deadline for sign-up is October 31st, 2006.
  2.  I'll collect each person's mailing address and email, and then contact each person individually with the info for their recipient.
  3.  Kits can come from the stash, or can be purchased. I suggest a maximum price of $20-$25, but certainly don't feel obligated to spend that much. A nice kit can be had for less than $10 with a coupon at the right store!
  4. Kit should be an injection molded, WWII era aircraft in 1/48 scale.
  5. Wrap your kit in wrapping paper, include a card, and send to your recipient no later than November 30th, 2006.
  6. Keep who your recipient and Santa is a secret until we all post here December 25th.
  7. Beginning  12:01 AM UMT, December 25th, you can start posting who your Santa is, and what kit you received. Pics of you and your kit would be a bonus!
  8. The actual build part of the GB can start on Dec. 25th, 2006, and will run to June 30th, 2007. Note: End date is extended indefinetly- have fun!
  9. AM, resin, PE and any other add-on is fine.
  10. Post pics of progress and completion.

I'll use this first post in the thread for updating dates, participants and general news. Please post any questions or ideas. And if you need to contact me off forum, email me at jonbius@gmail.com.

Finally- here's a suggested GB badge- a Santa Claus handing out presents from the cockpit of a P-39- genuine WWII photo!
