Hi,

can I change my kit?

Iwas going to do the BBMF Memorial boxed set, but couldn't start until the summer as I was also doing it as part of the 'Once Were Warriors' GB. I looked at my stash and have another couple fo old Airifx kits. They will no doubt cause me some headaches, but I can start them straight away.

So can I change kits and do a 1/72 Bristol Belvedere please?

I'm in for the TSR.2, seems appropriate for a welcome back since it was one of the last kits produced by the old Airfix, wasn't it?

John, outstanding choice!  I was hoping a TSR.2 would pop up in one of the Airfix group builds.  That kit is on my short list of must have kits, though I'm too cheap to pay ebay prices for it.  I'm hoping it will be rereleased shortly now that Airfix is getting back on its feet.  Look forward to seeing your progress.

Now I'm off to decode Humbrol paint callouts for my Seafire FR46.  Hopefully, Airfix Mk.2 will fix this annoying problem with their instructions and give color information in something other than Humbrol paint numbers!

Greetings from across the pond. Is it too late to join in this GB, if it is not I have a DH Mossie in 1/72nd that I would like to contribute.

Hi to all, I hope everyone had a great silly season!!! We have the whole year of modelling ahead of us!!!!! I am finishing off a Harrier GR3 that was supposed to be done for the farewell build, but things got in the way!! I am on the second repaint, as I botched the first. I hope to finish that soon so I can continue on my Jaguar, and make a start on the Super Etendard. After that, I think a 72nd F-14A, and F-15A's. Does it matter if I use aftermarket decals? In the meantime, I have to study for a promotion that will take me back to Sydney to work. Means more money, more chance to buy more kits!!!!Evil [}:)]

Hi Folks,

Here's some scans of the box art for my kit. The plastic bubble pack had disintegrated so I feel comfortable that I'm not desecrating a collector's item.

I've actually made a start, photos soon.

Cheers

Welcome welcome!  If I had the time, I'd build one too. I've got a small stash of those kits in storage.  Quite a few problems with it though.

Hi,

I have opened up the 1/72 Belvedere box and seen what I am up against. This kit certainly shows its age. So far the problems are/will be:

  1. Two small clear parts are missing. (Bought this from eBay a year or so ago.)
  2. One rotor hub was broken and had to be carefully put back together again.
  3. The cockpit glazing comes in 2 halves that have to be glued together. Then of course there is the seam down the middle of it to deal with.
  4. The fuselage halves touch where they touch, and don't everywhere else - if you know what I mean?

I thought (hoped) this kit wouldn't take too long, but I guess I will be taking it slow and learning some new techniques along the way.

I will build OOB and leave the raised rivets as they are. There will be enough to do as it is to try and get a half decent end product!

My modeling resolution for 2007 is to take things slow and not rush through problems. I guess this kit will push that to the limit!

Problems? I don't need no stinking problems! I'm working on an MPM P-63 for the P-39 group build and I think I will have learned a bit more about patience from that kit. If it gets too bad, I can always pull out my 1/48 Contrail TSR.2 for an attitude adjustment...

At least I knew what I was in for with the figure, being a very old mold. Disappointing that the TSR is not state of the art, but at least we've got one to build now.

Cheers

Bf-110 C/D Update report. I woluld love to call this a progress report but there has to be progress to report for that, right?Confused [%-)] I have attached the nose and engine cowls and have been sanding ever since. The nose is bulbous and once it gets to the right shape I will have to fill more gaps. This little fella is going to be a real handful.Mischief [:-,]

Things being a handful seems to be an occupational hazard with old Airfix kits.

I've got the fuselage halves together on the Belvedere and it looks like almost every part of the seam needs filler. I even have to sand the cockpit canopy (came as 2 parts). Keeps me out of trouble I guess!

Ollie, Osher is the GB head chief but as he stated in the post just above yours he is going to be out of touch for awhile but you are more than welcome to join in as long as you follow the rules on the first page.

I won't be starting on my build for quite awhile but I look forward to seeing some progress pics from others in the meantime.

Hi Everyone,

Here's a poor quality shot showing my figure with some undercoating done. At least it's progress...

Ahh.. the good old boys are back.  I wanted to aprticipate in the other Airfix Farewell GB but time skipped away on me.  Given that this is a whole year, I can definately do this.  I have two to choose from, the BF-110c/d and the Tornado GR.mk.4, both in 1:72 (Dave I am slowly being converted....Big Smile [:D]).

So count me in!!!

<<EDIT - I guess I'll do the Tornado as I double checked the rules and since I have a vacuform canopy and photoetch set for the bf-110 I won't doing it for this GB>>

Thanks for the encouragement Dave (as if I need any moreWink [;)]).  I've been lurking and posting the odd comment here and there.  It seems there are a lot of new faces/avatars.  Also when I'm not doing much there doesn't seem much need to say anything.  I also joined the Revell-Monogram GB as I just started their Titanic Kit - whoa now there is a rough kit.  I'll try my best though but hey, for 1$ who can complain!

What say you, a ship... It was a garage sale special Big Smile [:D], I like the story of the Titanic and it is a beautiful ship so why not try my hand with a floater, although it didn't stay afloat very long did it?

I did finish my Dragon 1:72 T-34 a week before Christmas but I just haven't found the time to upload the pics to the Armor forum yet. Keep looking as I plan on doing it this week (fingers crossed!).  I'll say this, I will be building more targets er.. I mean Tanks!  It took me about  a month to do the T-34 and I loved it, for the amont of time I've been taking lately, that was a fast build!

Oh yeah and remember the Spitfire I was doing for the Allied Aces GB, well, I just have to finish the stripes (probably tonight) and then future, decals and some fidly bits then voila!  I would say another two months...Laugh [(-D].

Jay, A floater eh?  What scale is that thing... 1/400?  All I can say is great minds think alike.  Check out what I am building for the "In your stash" GB.  Hee hee!  It was a Christmas present.  I am almost finished my Spanish Civil War build and the Battle of Britain build is stalled at about half done.  I committed to building a Do 217 for this build as that was all that was in my stash (except for the Lancaster kit but with the Hasegawa kit waiting in the wings I'm not likely going to build the airfix Lanc) and I am on a spending freeze for awhile.  I won't likely get to the Do 217 until the summer or later.

So when are you going to build that airfix Me 110?

It is the old Revell USA 1:570 kit.  Very rough on detail but I think a careful hand can make it into a respectable looking ship.

I dunno about the Bf-110c/d.  I want to rescibe it like I did for the Bolingbroke I did for the Canadian GB (I found it was kind of fun...and satisfying Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]).  I am also going to try my hand at vacuforming the canopy as the kit supplied is so freaking thick I doubt I could snap it with my hands!  In an FSM article last year there was an article about vacuforming your own canopy and it had plans for your own vacuforming box so I made one. I haven't tried it out yet but we'll see soon.  I want to do it this year Confused [%-)] and if Darson hosts another BoB GB I will be in it for sure.

Babies are loads of fun but they really cut into your personal time...Big Smile [:D]  no really, I have loved every minute with Matthew and would never trade it for anything.  So it takes me longer to do any builds now, I don't care, this hobby is supposed to be relaxing and stress relieving.Smile [:)]

Okay, I've found a kit I'll be building for this. It will be the Airfix 1/72 scale D.H.C Beaver. I should be able to get started on it this week. I'll post pics when I get some progress made.

Duke - A beaver, nice.

Jay - any chance of another Canadian GB ? I couldn't get mine done for the last one due to a baby in the family too, but I'm still keen to do a T-33.

Cheers

Thanks Tony! And to show that I haven't been lax, here is my progress so far on this model:

This first one is a kit that I won in one of my IPMS club's Distressed Kit Auction for two dollars. It had already been started, as someone sanded all the rivet detail off, and was probably going to re-scribe the panel lines. Instead, they donated it to the club for the auction and I'm finishing it now.

There are other Airfix models in my stash that I may also start for this Group Build. Meanwhile, stay tuned for more progress on this beaver.

Here's a bit of an update of what I have done so far.

As you can see the fuselage is together, with the first line of filler in place and waiting to be sanded down later tonight. Lots of filler yet to come!

This canopy came in 2 parts and so has a seam up the middle. The 2 parts didn't fit together well, hence the sanding taking place. I've never had to sand a clear part before so I am thinking that using progressively finer sanding sticks and a final dip in future is the way to solve this? Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated. Most of the canopy join will be painted over, so as long as the join is smooth it shouldn't be too bad. Quite why this was molded in 2 parts beats me!

Ouch, that is one ugly looking canopy paul.  You can get a decent looking canopy by using progressively finer sand paper and I've used the dremel polishing pad as a last step with good results (just keep the speed way down or you'll burn into the plastic.  If this wasn't an oob Gb I would suggest a vac form canopy instead of messing with that beast.
